Winner of the 3MBS live performance series ‘The Talent’ 2014, Arthur Athan is a pianist and teacher from Melbourne. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Music majoring in piano performance under Tamara Smolyar, together with a Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma of Languages (Indonesian) at Monash University. He achieved his AMusA with Distinction and his LMusA during his secondary studies. He completed his VCE at Scotch College in 2011 where he achieved a perfect score in Music Performance under the tutelage of Majella Drew.
Arthur has received many accolades including the inaugural 1st prize of the Open Piano Recital Section of the South Eastern Festival for Arts and Music (2010), the MSV Nehama Patkin Memorial Award (2011), first prize in the Knox Piano Awards Open (2014) and the Highway Press Award (Ringwood Eisteddfod 2014). Arthur’s excellence in his university music studies have been recognised with the Concerto Award (2014) and the Joan Earle Prize for best first year recital (2013) awarded by the Sir Zelman Cowen Faculty of Music (Monash University).
Arthur was privileged to study under Roberto Prosseda (Italy) at the Scuola di Musica G. Verdi (Comune di Prato) during his recent trip to Prato, Italy, as part of his Monash undergraduate music studies. During his studies, Arthur has participated in masterclasses with eminent pianists and pedagogues including the legendary Paul Badura-Skoda (Austria), Professor Stephen McIntyre, Professor Max Cooke, Nicolas Hodges (UK), Philippe Cassard (France), Dr Dorian Leljak (Serbia), and Associate Professor Junghwa Lee (Korea/USA).
Arthur also enjoys playing with the music ministry at Donvale Presbyterian Church and teaching piano to young students, all of whom have received a pass with Honours or higher for their AMEB exams. Arthur has affiliations with the Musical Society of Victoria, the annual Missionvale charity events, the Old Scotch Symphony Orchestra, the Austral Salon, the annual Alliance Francaise ‘Fete de la Musique’ as well as the Bohemian Rhapsody Social Club.
Arthur is looking forward to his upcoming concerto appearance with the Monash Academy Orchestra on 30 May at Robert Blackwood Hall where he will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
