MIKAN WITH CLEMENTINE website review and photos by Olga Tolkatcheva
I was very fortunate to participate in a Mikan "Create your own bag from Japanese textiles" workshop. Situated in Collingwood, Melbourne, and run by French designer Clementine Sendner, it was a truly international cultural experience.
Clementine is a guest in Melbourne and doing the workshops as part of the independent designers fashion week. She found Melbourne to embrace ethical concepts and is close to her heart.
The owner of the brand originated from France but lives and works in Kyoto. After finishing her Design degree in Lyon she came to Japan as an exchange student, fell in love with Japanese culture and stayed. Clementine started Mikan as an opportunity to reuse and recycle traditional textiles. She makes old silk pieces come to life as modern, useful and highly sought after bags, pouches, backpacks, and even caps.
The workshop was hosted by The Social Studio (128 Smith Street, Collingwood) a very cool shop/workspace/teaching studio, that helps new aspiring designers from culturally diverse background. In this workshop sustainability and recycling are not just fashionable buzz words, but a way of living.
Clementine brought her collection of Obi - sumptuous heavy silk waist sashes, decorated with jacquard patterns. Each magnificent piece has a story to tell and was traditionally handmade for a particular occasion and person, completely unique in its design. it was almost impossible to cut such beautiful fabric, but the end result was well worth it.
Clementine is lovely, calm and easy to talk to. Under her guidance the bag creation was easy. She helped with step by step instructions and gave individual attention to all participants. Each of us selected a piece from the variety on the table, cut it and stitched into a decorative pouch/evening bag. No previous experience with a sewing machine was needed, it was all shown and explained. I am loving my bag - my wearable treasure!
The value of this course is unbelievable. Each participant gets to keep an amazing piece of exclusive and expensive silk, recreated as an evening bag/cool day pouch. The knowledge that it was created by our own hands makes it even more precious.
Clementine had to travel far to bring her craft to Melbourne and we are hoping that bringing her workshops to Melbourne will be a permanent feature.
We need to make her brand known in Australia. We ask you to spread the word around, like the business page and come to the future workshops. Not only you will have an amazing bag to take home, but you can soak up the creative atmosphere, and be proud of your ability to make something with your own hands.
