DANCE IS THE HIDDEN LANGUAGE OF THE SOUL

THE IMPERIAL RUSSIAN BALLET with DON QUIXOTE
website

The Imperial Russian Ballet’s production of Don Quixote will be a night to remember.Hailed by theatregoers in New Zealand as "one of the best ballets they have seen” this full production of one of the repertoire’s timeless classics sees more than 40 dancers at the height of their powers perform a story backed with romance, derring do and high comedy. Don Quixote was written by Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes and published in two volumes in 1605 and 1615. It is considered one of the most influential work of literature, and its impact is still felt today: many of us use the word `"Quixotic" or the phrase "tilting at windmills", based on a wildly funny scene in the book, even if we don’t know their source. The ballet tells the story of Alonso Quijano, an ageing Spanish nobleman who reads so many novels on chivalry, romance, princesses and knights, that he starts to lose touch with reality. He takes it upon himself to revive chivalry under the name Don Quixote, so chosen because it rhymes with Lanzarote (Lancelot), one of the more famous Knights from history. As Don Quixote, Alonso imagines himself as a brave Knight in search of the lady of his dreams, Dulcinea, a local farm girl he had once loved. Accompanied by a simple peasant farmer – his faithful squire Sancho Panza - Don Quixote sets off on their adventures. Along the way he leads a charge against imaginary enemies, he fights castles thinking they are giants, he pays homage to gypsy kings and takes part in castle festivities. The Moscow-based Imperial Russian Ballet Company is highly regarded world-wide for its interpretations of classic masterpieces. Its version of Don Quixote proudly follows in this tradition, and is a must-see event for lovers of dance, theatre and spectacle. The Imperial Russian Ballet was formed in 1994 by the Bolshoi Theatre soloist, Gediminas Taranda. They have staged classic masterpieces in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and the Mossovet Theatre. The home venue for the troupe when they perform in Moscow is now the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre.

SCANDINAVIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2014

website

The region of Scandinavia - culturally comprised of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark - has produced some of the most iconic films ever made. From the masterpieces of Ingmar Bergman, to the radical, back-to-basics guerrilla-style filmmaking of the Dogme revolution, to the contemporary and transnational diversity of Nordic cinema, Palace is proud to present local audiences with a brand new event, created to offer a dedicated focus to an area of screen culture that has for too long been under-represented in Australia.

Indeed the mission of the inaugural Scandinavian Film Festival is to ensure that more films from the region are presented where they deserve to be seen: on the big screen. Too often some extraordinary films have never seen the light of day here (or rather, the darkness of a cinema), and Palace considers it an honour and a privilege to help correct this.

So with thanks to the support of SFF sponsors and cultural partners, Palace is proud to present a celebration of Scandinavian screen culture, cuisine and music with you, our world-cinema loving audience, via a curated selection of 21 outstanding films that range from critically acclaimed debuts of risktaking new talent, through to crowd-pleasing local blockbusters.

From our Opening Night Galas to the Special Events, including the live Q&As with our special guest, the fabulous Laura Birn (one of Finland’s rising stars, who was recently profiled by the Berlin Film Festival’s annual talent platform Shooting Stars as one of Europe’s Best Young Actors), there is something for everyone.

Please join us, and celebrate the art of cinema from one of the world’s most breathtaking and talent-rich regions.

Release Date: 28 November 2013

“I don’t know when I’ve ever seen a film as eerily perfect in tone and taste as Fill the Void.” — The Weekly Standard
Directed by Rama Burshtein.
Classification: M, 90 mins.
Country: Israel.
Language: Hebrew (subtitled).

Sweeping up at the 2012 Ophir Awards (Israel’s Oscars), this ground-breaking feature is the first film to be made by an ultra-orthodox* Jewish woman for a general audience. Following triumphant screenings at last year’s New York and Telluride Film Festivals, Rama Burshtein’s debut affords a glimpse into a somewhat exotic, secret and sealed world. At 18 Shira (Haras Yaron, who won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival), the youngest daughter of an ultra orthodox family, is faced with a choice not unlike those of a Jane Austen heroine. When her elder sister, Esther (Renana Raz) dies, Shira’s mother, Rivka (Irit Sheleg), suggests a match for her daughter in a desperate attempt to keep her newborn grandchild close to her. Fill the Void boldly emphasises both the loneliness of the heroine’s predicament and its implications for those closest to her.

Director:
Ruben Alves
Cast: Rita Blanco, Joaquim de Almedia
Duration: 91 mins
Rating: CTC
Release Date: 12 December, 2013
Writer/director Ruben Alves’ enormously charming, semi-autobiographical Parisian comedy is the story of a loving, hardworking married couple whose long-held dream of returning to their homeland finally comes true – only to be secretly undermined by their friends and neighbours.

Maria (Rita Blanco) and José (Joaquim de Almeida) emigrated from Portugal 30 years ago. Ever since, they have lived in the modest ground floor lodgings of a chic apartment building in Paris, raising their now adult daughter and teenage son, and becoming utterly indispensible to all around them.

When José learns he has inherited the family winery and the couple’s dream of returning to Portugal is now possible, they are elated – but struggle with how to reveal the big news. However word spreads anyway, and soon their family, neighbours, friends and employers are scrambling behind the scenes to find ways to prevent them from leaving…

Richly informed by his own upbringing as the son of Portuguese immigrants in Paris, Alves’ warm-hearted, cross-cultural comedy features a terrific ensemble cast, spot-on comic timing and a thoroughly appealing central couple, whose dilemmas are portrayed with great tenderness and affection.

Hannah Arendt is a portrait of the genius that shook the world with her discovery of “the banality of evil.” After she attends the Nazi Adolf Eichmann’s trail in Jerusalem, Arendt dares to write about the Holocaust in terms no one had ever heard before. Her work instantly provokes a scandal, and Arendt stands strong as she is attacked by friends and foes alike. But as the German-Jewish émigré struggles to suppress her own painful associations with the past, the film exposes her beguiling blend of arrogance and vulnerability – revealing a soul defined and derailed by exile.

After a calamity-filled journey through a land scarred by the legacy of war, to prove he's not cursed he builds a giant rocket to enter the most dangerous competition of the year: the Rocket Festival.

THE OTHER SON

“suspenseful and touching… excellent casting and a thoughtful, layered script…” Screen Daily

Two young men, one Israeli and one Palestinian, discover they were accidentally switched at birth.  Two families divided by fate, but united by understanding.

As he is preparing to join the Israeli army for his national service, a blood test proves Joseph is not his parents' biological son.  An investigation reveals he was inadvertently switched at birth with Yacine, the son of a Palestinian family from the West Bank, both having been born in Haifa during a missile attack in the Gulf War.

A touching deeply personal family drama, the filmmakers have steered clear of sentimentality or melodrama as each character is forced to reassess their respective identities, their values and their beliefs.

THE FIRST FAGIN (FROM JIFF - JEWISH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL)

THE FIRST FAGIN, the fascinating true story of Ikey Solomon, inspiration for Charles Dicken’s legendary character Fagin

Australian filmmakers Helen Gaynor and Alan Rosenthal meld interviews with fictionalised romance and action to produce this docudrama hybrid – an examination of curious rumour around one of Van Diemen Land’s most infamous convicts.

When Charles Dickens created the character of Fagin in Oliver Twist, he gave birth to one of English literature’s most gloriously villianous and recognisable personas. But few people realise Dickens’ portrait of Fagin was possibly based on the Jewish receiver and fencer of stolen goods, Ikey Solomon.

The First Fagin reimagines the fantastical life of Ikey Solomon – from London’s dens of vice to Newgate jail to Australia’s prison shores. Ikey takes us on a thrilling ride into crime, punishment, adventure and love while battling against the transportation system of 19th century England.
Narrated by the incomparable Miriam Margolyes, famed for her one-woman Dickens stage shows.

“… the story’s power and standout photography of historic locations in Tasmania help win the day.” Variety

In his twilight years, Pierre-Auguste Renoir is tormented by the loss of his wife, the pains of arthritic old age and the terrible news that his son Jean has been wounded in action. But when a young girl miraculously enters his world, the old painter is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy. Blazing with life, radiantly beautiful Andrée will become his last model, and the wellspring of a remarkable rejuvenation. Back at the family home to convalesce, Jean too falls under the spell of the new, redheaded star in the Renoir firmament. In their Mediterranean Eden – and in the face of his father’s fierce opposition – he falls in love with this wild, untameable spirit… and as he does so, within weak-willed, battle-shaken Jean, a filmmaker begins to grow.

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR

Acclaimed French filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche’s latest, based on Julie Maroh’s graphic novel, was the sensation of this year’s Cannes Film Festival even before it was awarded the Palme d’Or.
Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) is a young woman whose longings and ecstasies and losses are charted across a span of several years. Emma (Léa Seydoux) is the older woman who excites her desire and becomes the love of her life.

Kechiche’s movie is, like the films of John Cassavetes, an epic of emotional transformation that pulses with gestures, embraces, furtive exchanges, and arias of joy and devastation. It is a profoundly moving hymn to both love and life.

DEAD EUROPE

From the award-winning producers of Shame and Animal Kingdom comes the film adaption of acclaimed Melbourne author Christos Tsiolkas’ 2005 book, Dead Europe.

Photographer and gallery owner Isaac (Ewen Leslie) embarks on a pilgrimage of sorts to his recently deceased father’s ancestral home in Greece to return his ashes. Here, he discovers a sickening and insidious secret buried within his family’s past that involves a young Jewish boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Isaac’s world unravels as he realises he cannot escape the ghosts of the past, nor can he run from the secret that threatens to tear his family apart.

An intense and adrenalin-pumping film highlighting deep-seated European prejudices, anti-Semitism, and the drugs and sex culture of backpacker tourism, Dead Europe is the latest release for Australian director Tony Krawitz, adding to his impressive CV of television work (All Saints and City Homicide) and previous film offerings: The Tall Man (2011), Jewboy (2005) and Into The Night (2002).

“The film’s dreaminess is captivating, it moves along like a thriller… Dark, and emotionally claustrophobic… a film that describes a very real horror.” Peter Galvin, SBS

LORE

There is a new Transmission Films release of the movie called LORE, which opens in cinemas on September 20. Australian director Cate Shortland’s prodigious talent, so clearly evident in her earlier film Somersault, is fully realised in this magnif...icent new film, set in the dying days of World War II in Nazi Germany and based on the book The Dark Room by Rachel Seiffert. The film was in competition at this year’s Sydney Film Festival and the reviews were amazing. This is from The Hollywood Reporter: “a fitting reward for those who’ve waited eight years to see what Shortland would do next. ..lyrical, deeply affecting...spell binding...richly sensual”

Transmission Films is kind enough to give Bohemian Rhapsody Club 10 double in-season passes to give away. Offer value: $400.00
LORE is set in Germany the spring of Spring 1945. As the German resistance collapses and Allied forces sweep across the Motherland, five children embark on a journey which will challenge every notion we have of family, love and friendship. With their Nazi father and mother imprisoned by American and Russian forces, abandoned to an uncertain fate, LORE takes charge of her younger brothers and sister, guiding them from Bavaria across a devastated country, towards the safety of their grandmother’s house 900km away to the north. On the road, the children struggle to survive the punishing postwar conditions as Lore begins to understand the reality and consequences of her Nazi parent’s actions, their support of Hitler and his disastrous war, their direct knowledge and support of the atrocities of the Holocaust. TRIO BENAUD
The boys are bowling critics for six internationally with this recording – more than can be said for their beloved cricket team in the Ashes! Today's concert was marvelous - not even a quarter of a tone was misplayed - so rich the performance and so harmonically perfect the sound was. We listened to Bohemian Rhapsody (Freddie Mercury) beautifully arranged for piano/violin and cello are by a young and talented Australian composer Nicholas Buc (who also kindly greeted us at the reception)

; the second music piece played was Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven - this piece performed by them that had more than 9mln hits of iTUNES.
The boys from the Benaud Trio (Amir Farid - piano, Lachlan Bramble - violin, and Ewen Bramble - celloare) are back with a new recording Bohemian Rhapsody (by prestigious Melba Recording), and were celebrating it at The South Melbourne Town Hall today in the morning – where they recorded it.

Jeanne Pratt (Victorian of the Year) was be Guest of Honour and spoke at the reception.
I am placing a link for those of you keen to buy the new CD Bohemian Rhapsody: . One copy of the Bohemian Rhapsody CDs was given to Bohemian Rhapsody Club (what a coincidence indeed!) (signed as a gift by all three musicians-virtuosi) - the music samples you will have an opportunity to hear at our upcoming October concert where Amir Farid will be performing live solo piano.
there is also one more announcement on Benaud Trio: the next concert at the Recital Centre "Hymns and Hits" - will take place Saturday September 21 2013. 3pm and 6pm (for your diaries).

SAMSARA AND THE WHEEL OF LIFE
Picture
SAMSARA MOVIE BY HOPSCOTCH

website link

Prepare yourself for an unparalleled sensory experience. SAMSARA reunites filmmakers Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson, whose award-winning films BARAKA and CHRONOS brought a new visual and musical artistry to theaters. SAMSARA
is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever turning wheel of life,” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives.

Filmed over a period of five years in twenty-five countries on five continents, and shot on 70mm film, SAMSARA transports us to the varied worlds of sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial complexes, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, SAMSARA subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary. It encourages our own interpretations, inspired by breathtaking images and transcendent music that infuses the ancient with the modern. SAMSARA explores the wonders of our world, from the mundane to the miraculous, looking into the unfathomable reaches of man’s spirituality and the human experience and illuminating the links between humanity and the rest of nature.

THE CLOWN MAY BE THE SOURCE OF MIRTH BUT WHO SHALL MAKE THE CLOWN LAUGH?

SLAVA SNOWSHOW IN AUSTRALIA 2013

SLAVA’S SNOWSHOW is a breathtaking spectacle of beautifully crafted comic images, restoring childish wonder in people of all ages. “The single most beautiful thing I have ever seen in a theatre in my life.” Simon Callow, Sunday Express, UKFollowing his sensational performance as part of Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria, Slava went on to create his own SLAVA’S SNOWSHOW which has become a multi award-winning international sensation, delighting and thrilling audiences in more than 120 cities around the world, from London’s West End to Sydney and from New York to Moscow.

SLAVA’S SNOWSHOW is a fusion of traditional and contemporary theatrical clowning arts. The show brilliantly creates a world of wonderment and fantasy that transports the audience to a joyous dream-like place, where a bed becomes a boat in a storm-tossed sea; a woman is wrapped in cellophane and becomes flowers in a vase; a child walks in amazement inside a bubble; Slava boards a train and then becomes the train, his chimney-pot hat billowing smoke; and a web of unspun cotton envelopes the audience.

The stunning finale sees a letter turn into snowflakes, and the flakes turn into a snowstorm, which whirls around the auditorium, leaving the audience ankle-deep in snow.

SLAVA’S SNOWSHOW is a visual masterpiece loved by children and adults alike.
