HALF OF YELLOW SUN NEW RATE: 8/10
our living conditions are quiet and peaceful. we do not even suspect that at the same time there 50 wars happening around the world, people die from wounds and starvation, people struggle just to survive, forget about bread. there is nothing worse than any war in the world, it is ugly and it is never for people's freedom, it is always for someone in power: their own ambitions and personal interests. international wars are ugly but the most ugly wars are the civil wars - the same people, the same nation against the same people, the same blood, the same nation. groups and gangs that fight one against the other buy weapons from the same source, from the same distributor. to start such war I believe now it is easy as it is already a working plan: be it east and west fighting for domination or south and north fighting against each other. same people , brothers and sisters and no justice as they might hate each other without any reason: just because one wear pink shirt and the other prefers green - there are thousands of reasons to start the war, but there millions of them to settle in peace. when people do not fight they produce bread, iron and toys for their babies. when there is a war in the country people run from one safe place to another. they do not have time to work. who will be feeding the leaders? wars have to settle down otherwise leaders can die from starvation. that's why there are no endless wars - they must end as nobody will be working: the crops will not be collected and the plans will not be manufacturing guns to kill the people who made them. there is a vicious circle of wars. after 50 years the events took place in Nigeria, now the author, who was a young girl back then, witnessing the rebels killing her relatives describes the events with precise imprints it left in her mind.... painful to watch ... but truthful in its cruelty to the hard working civilians.
They sat on wooden planks and the weak morning sun streamed into the roofless class as she unfurled Odenigbo’s cloth flag and told them what the symbols meant. Red was the blood of the siblings massacred in the North, black was for mourning them, green was for the prosperity Biafra would have, and finally, the half of a yellow sun stood for the glorious future.
good actors and very truthfully made picture.
THE INVISIBLE WOMAN NEW invite to media preview - kind courtesy of eOne / Hopscotch website RATE: 10/10
this is how the biographies work very often: the greater the man is the more mysteries he has built around him ... as we know the mysteries are sometimes more powerful than the truth.. the tales have more in them than the reality. more to that: the greater the person the more polarised opinions are created about him: one say he was a total genius, the national idol and the raw model, the others call him an absolute bastard and one dirty man. there is no truth. one brilliant person is as big as the universe itself - he fits inside of him everything and everyone. he accepts any opinion about him - he simply does not care. he is what he is - no less, no more that we tell about him. the figure of Ch. Dickens in the movie is shown just on the boarder of these two polarities: he is not a bastard, no - positivety around him and his famosity (not only as a writer but as a fantastic actor and theater director) blend so well together that he balances between two definitions of a good man with immaculate reputation and a beast like one of his book's character: more like the one who is not black nor he is white - he just like every one of us, humans has shades of every color, including grey.
but let's talk about the "INVISIBLE WOMAN". who is she? you say it is Charles's wife: speechless fat, physical (BTW, amazing actress!) woman who quietly gives births to his children, feeds them with her milk, looks after the house and the physical aspect of his life. she is observing his mischieves with the still obedience of a grass fed cow. he needs her only for procreation. she looks like one - she fills up the room with her physical body. ... and yes, you will be wrong if you called her "invisible woman" but you will be partially right - physically she does not exist, so she is invisible... more to that in her own words: she will always be his shadow, he will never belong to her... you may answer - it is Nelly, Dicken's lover. she is airy, she understands him and his spiritual needs. she is fine and she is like his soul - pure and deep. she is his graceful use for many years to come. she must be invisible as she should not be shown to the public. their relationship are forbidden, of course. (one more amazing actress indeed!).. if you say Nelly is the invisible woman you will be wrong again. she is but again: only partially... the real invisible woman is his work. he will never belong to any of his women, be it his wife or his lovers; his work will always be his woman: he will look for her at the most crucial moments - after the train catastrophe on the way back to London he will assist Nelly but he will come back to look for his handwritten notes lost in the grass. his work was an always will be his most powerful and most influential lover: the most invisible woman out of all. all his other woman will take the second place, they will always be the secondaries in his theater: they might play different roles according to what he assigns them to do in his life: be it spiritual, physical or any other purpose, the other woman, his WORK will always be number one. the loops and the knots of times.... the plot was created by a real genius. he is not Ch Dickens but he stays on the same level with him. he is Charles Dickens not only in acting (he is an incredibly talented actor himself) but in directing the movie - so smart the plot is unfolding its hidden planes following the perfect mix of revealing the past and elaborating on the present. Dickensianity it is in its best expression. not even one fake moment, not even one hiccup in acting, in directing, in selection of write actors' crew, in script writing: perfect, brilliant, Oskars-deserving on many levels! some movies that we watch - they can be compared with something you saw in the past. some are better some are worse, when the movie looks like a small sand pit we can take and digest it. this movie you can not compare to anything you watched before. this movie is a deep sand channel with channels and fiords, it is a real deep classic it its best expression put into one unique pattern of art-master-hand-made emboidery! excellently done! BIG THANK YOU ! oh. yes... one more ... last note: you cam stop reading the book, close it... you can write the book yourself and finish it the way you like... but how about life? you can not stop it , you can not re-read its pages, you can not re-write the ending - be it happy or sad... it is your book of life...
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON NEW invite to media preview - kind courtesy of RIALTO FILM DISTRIBUTION website RATE: 6/10
the movie was a bit below my expectations. the subject is not new: like THE OTHER SON movie and some others that we watched before it describes a common situation - two sons swapped at birth and now their parents have to suffer the consequences. I have to say the other movies were full of fresh ideas, humor, food for thought and emotions; this story on the contrary seemed a bit plain, it was unfolding quite long too, some episodes were out of place, naive, the ideas seemed a bit banal and the actors were not at their best to be honest - weak - some of the scenes were hard to believe not t say a bit fake, I really liked the kids performance - so natural and so charmingly cute - they in fact saved the movie and i had a feeling the director knew about it too.
"can you really love the child without your blood?.." - apparently yes.
music selection is excellent! the movie quite calming like a meditation on the subject of love and separation and will be pleasant to watch for the whole family.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BRENDA HEAN? NEW DVD - kind courtesy of Antidote Films website RATE: 7/10
so what actually happened to Brenda, one of the leading Tasmanian environmental activist and more than political figure? it is almost a detective story - investigation takes a famous filmmaker Scott Millwood all around the island, his questions never end, and there are more of them than answers. Forests and lakes in Tasmania are the most beautiful and picturesque in the world; one word: pristine. We let go the Tasmanian native culture, we let go Tasmanian tiger, but what about the the aspects of life? will something so dear to many of us disappear from Tasmanian map so our children will never be able to see it? thank god there people out there who stop or if they can't at least slow down the letting go process for us. some of them pay with their lives for facing the truth. Do you think Scott will solve the mystery of Breda's airplane vanishing one day? Sometimes the mystery is more powerful then the truth and this is one great example of it. Scott is determined though: he interviews political leader, clairvoyants, friends and relatives, co-workers, the list goes on and on... it is intriguing, funny in some parts (“Trespassers will be shot not prosecuted”) but more frustrating to us, the viewers as the story reveals its secrets... a bit slow but enjoyable film indeed. "She sat upon a block of quartzite which had been etched by the weather and was ornamented by a patchwork of moss and lichen. Her chin was thrust defiantly forward. As she gazed across the lake she seemed to become one with it, and both of them seemed to become part of something greater ..."
THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN AMERICA: DANIEL ELLSBERG AND THE PENTAGON PAPERS NEW DVD - kind courtesy of Antidote Films website RATE: 4/10
i usually do not look at the other reviews and rates when i do mine. with this particular movie i noticed that GOODFIL.MS contains quite opposite opinions: some are very high and some are pretty low. there is one thing i do not understand in such movies: how do they help us apart from showing the good sides and victories of one man? if the papers were a real top secret the man would be dead by now - this is how it works. if he could stop any other wars apart from the one in Vietnam after that horror of killing peaceful civilians (and supposedly no one in US government officials did not know about it...) if this man is so dangerous why is he still walking live? if he was able to change it back the why is he not doing it now as this history repeats itself in hundreds of other countries since 60-s and 70-s? peaceful civilians, children , women, old people and other people get killed like "canon meat". i have my own thoughts about it but they might be not for the wide audience to hear... but still my opinion would not change the world situation as one person can not change anything and can not decide... decisions are made somewhere else who survives, who rules, who lives like a slave and who will be working for whom. my other point is that we will never know anyhow what was the truth there even with the glimpses of it... and yes, some parts of the movie i can not put together.... so this makes my rate low...
HARRY DEAN STANTON: PARTLY FICTION NEW DVD - kind courtesy of Antidote Films website RATE: 4/10
i am too dumb to understand the life philosophy of this man - he is too evolved for me. he is extremely lonely from what i could see, he is a Hollywood actor not many people would know. His life line is said in two short sentences: "I'm nothing. There is no self"
there are might be one thought that was striking: "When you're nothing, you've got no problems"... right?
"I don't want any lines. How 'bout doing nothing? How 'bout silence?"
"The void, the concept of nothingness, is terrifying to most people on the planet. And I get anxiety attacks myself. I know the fear of that void. You have to learn to die before you die. You give up, surrender to the void, to nothingness."
i think i might be dumb... it looks like this man sees god.
AIM HIGH IN CREATION NEW DVD - kind courtesy of Antidote Films website RATE: 6/10
i did not get it: it's funny, it's dramatic in some parts, but what's the point? the result? for me it was more like getting entertained by the process of filming something about people's tragedy... the core of the issue was not uncovered. although id=f the aim of the movie was more entertaining than fighting against the evil gas companies there aim is fulfilled to its best. i really loved the scenes when Anna was working with North Korean movie directors and actors if you look at it not as pat of the movie but as a separate part about learning on film industry in the communist country. The film aimed to be "so very powerful" turned into a bubble in the dirty creek. it's a pity indeed as there was no power in it... just some laughter upon laughter. but hopefully actors at least had fun... the movie about a huge and environmentally unfriendly gas mine near Sydney was one hilarious mockery indeed...
ART & COPY NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 9/10
do you like advertising and commercials? me too... but some of them are too good, too striking, too professional, too artistic and way too beautiful to be ignored or neglected... why? who has started a new wave and how these new generation of talented artists work? how do ideas get sold? are they expensive? who buys them and why? what the client sees in such ideas and how do we respond? why companies invest billions of dollars in advertising and if they do it badly - how people who see it react on it or they simply ignore it (???)... what is called an inspiration in advertising? are the feelings manufacturers? is advertising an art or a tool? what is genuine or, as an opposite, manipulative advertising? do commercials really play on our emotions? what is called: successful advertising campaign and how business grow and benefit from it? this is one conceptual documentary not to be missed. I would recommend it to be watched by every small, medium and large business owners and the people involved in marketing and public relationship. I loved this film.
THE WHALE NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 10/10
Luna, Luna, Luna... Where are you now, our little sea-puppy? Are you finally united with your family? Did you find your home? Do you swim free in the waters of west coast of Vancouver Island? Did the zoo stole you from us and you are kept in captivity entertaining ignorance? Has someone kill you? May be you are already in the other world living in a form of a human being or another orca? The main thing is: are you loved? Did you find what you wanted: care, friendship and attention, you, the one small killer whale who almost started a war between local residents, government officials, Indian tribes and scientists, one year old you had more power than all these human beings to make your own, free choices.
One day we humans may meet an intelligent being from another world. Hollywood tells us this stranger will come flying down in a spaceship, and will look a bit like us. But maybe it won’t be like that. Maybe it will be like this. -- Ryan Reynolds, in The Whale
It is one story for all of you: young and old to keep in your heart and to learn how to love unconditionally.
"The night was still, except for the breathing. Mist drifted over the strange planet’s undulating surface, and out there, beyond visibility and perhaps beyond comprehension, the breathing was getting closer.Trapped by the hostile liquid around the vessel that had brought him all these miles, the human waited, hearing only the breathing and the faint irregular ticking of the vessel’s motor as it cooled, like the sound of time running out..." from Extraterrestrial Whales by Michael Parfit
UTOPIA NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: n/a
just thought is is inappropriate to rate such movie... and I highly recommend you all not to watch it... no, not all of you, the ones who do not like facing the truth - there is no point for you in watching it. for the ones who love the truth - it is unbearable, beyond human capacities to watch it... the truth can be disgusting and filthy but it is still truth. it is just too emotional for me to tell you what I think... Australia is the home for first australians, who considered as the oldest nation on earth. this land belongs to them.. it is their home and it is not their home at all...
this movie is a perfect blend of fearless MATRIX and rebelling George Orwell's "1984". i did not read the novel DIVERGENT but in one of the comments i read it was not made very close to the book.... and I believe it is a beauty of such movies: you have so much perfect and full-of-deep-thoughts material to play with and make up your own version. i also believe this: if you do not like these kind of movies i strongly recommend to start making your own ones to solve all the issues... anyway not to be taken away by some "on-the-surface" comments in twitter i better start thinking about the movie... strong and weak sides: - there are lots of very strong messages social and political that stir you up. - camera work - sensational! - actors - some of the parts emotionally hard to believe or over- or under- played that does not diminish the overall excellent impression on actors' talented performance - some of the scenes are taking too long loosing the movie "tempo" but it looks like it was done on purpose... indeed.. - colors and costumes (textures that show times different from modern - more like future and it is felt though the whole movie) are done amazingly well - i personally loved the part when the girl gets into the "dream/test" state of mind and she wakens up with the words: this is not real... it feels so real like out of body experiences - as soon as yo pronounce this phrase the reality changes and you become unbelievably powerful and start controlling reality/dream - her dreams are my favorite part of the movie! - i also loved the ammunition (black leather)/guns they used to play and to kill - they are so "matrix" but so different too - if you do not know who you are or what your way is do not try to find it - there is no answer to this or we all have different answers to this. it is subjective as we are subjective as individuals. the truth and the life purpose also changes as we change and travel along on our life journey s the purpose is another illusion that you will never catch - it is more like a "here-and-now" moment that is always here and it is never there... - it is also a movie about feelings, felling human and feeling a warrior at the same time. - there is a matrix train that takes you from one point to the other - more like a tunnel travelling in your dreams from one world/plane to the other.. - loving the music choices
I hope you will enjoy the movie as we did rating it high.. You will love it - I know you will!
POSITION AMONG THE STARS NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 10/10
it is so easy to find the southern cross in the sky when you are in the field. the sky is pure and close and you feel connected to god, it seems so close - just a stretch of a hand and you feel his grandness. as i lived in my grandmum's country home during some summers i remember this feeling... the life in the village is boring and simple: it starts so very early in the morning and it starts with water - always with water - this is how the movie starts actually - with the drops of dew in the grass. (btw, the camera work is amazing!). yes, life in the village is simple: water, fire, rice, meditations (watching the space between you and the horizon), silence and insects... you are in the constant observation. but I was taken away by the village sceneries.. sorry. village is a total opposite to the city: Jakarta is soooo busy: the morning hours are bikes and helmets, bikes and endless helmets... life in the city is loud: families are arguing, wives and husbands are fighting, children study, children do not want to listen to what parents tell them, husbands to not listen to their wives, there is money-money-money exchange hands everywhere: selling food. fish races, banks, markets and more and more and even more than that... life is boiling in the city: it is still simple: people try to solve their day to day problems and try to enjoy life but every enjoyment has a cost to it: every movement is a sacrifice of you, your soul, your inner divine purpose to the temptations... and they never end. the temptations only grow, they grow with time and with attachments: the greed never has the end... doesn't it? may be it does?..amazing movie: it's a real life of a small Jakarta family but how many synchronicities you can find there comparing it with your won life line? there are many levels covered in this movie - there is also many religious and strong political hidden and open messages .sometimes you get scared when you watch movies like this... but i still highly recommend to watch it.
TABLOID NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 8/10
this is the most bizarre and mesmerizing documentary i have ever watched in my life.you can not find out where the truth is and what is made up by the other people involved in the stories that looked more like scandals. the documentary is about a famous Joyce McKinney - Miss Wyoming: private jets, body guards, yellow journalists, raped Mormons, deaf-mute theater troupe escaping Britain, movie and rock stars, stories that make international headlines, men kept in captivity for days, endless list of lovers, "sexual references", cloned dogs, expensive lifestyle, manipulation of the crowd but mainly (a saint or a whore?) - of men, tales or real life (?), three words: strange, strange, strange, but totally interesting! as looks like the reality is more interesting than fiction. and the truth... who knows - it might be only an illusion!
BUDRUS NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 10/10
some stories about men fighting for their freedom make you sad.. some make you inspired. this story is told by the Palestinian community organiser, Ayed Morrar, a person with passion for his people and for his land. the purpose of the movement is pure and simple: the people are unarmed, they simply ask for what belongs to them as human beings: respect to their ancestors, to their land and to their children. people have different vision from what government decides for them to do. soldiers have their vision too - they have to do their duties, they simply follow the orders and they can not not obey them. the leaders of the movement are taken to jail so often that their families never see them. we see only one side of the story - from the eyes of Israeli and American official media. we never see it from the other side of the fence. the episode that is shown in the movie is about villagers defending their land of very old olive trees on it (some of the trees even have names of their parents) from being used to be cleared in order for the fence being erected on it. the fence is to separate the nations even further. the old roman proverb says: :divide and conquer! when the people are divided by nations, boarders, languages, teams and many other "teams" it is so easy to rules them. it is fun to control and rule them - the simple idea used by ancient civilizations rulers up to the modern life controlers. but this is not even the case. when the basic things are taken from you only because you belong to this nation and not the other - this is a work of darkness. young Israeli men and women come over to Budrus to support the community and they are proclaimed by the Israeli government as the criminals that have to be placed in jail. this video reminded me the movie hat we watched recently at the Jewish International Film Festival 2013 - BETHLEHEM - the reality is so very close. the story is not about the lccal problems as it may seem. the problem is not even reflecting the conflict between two nations. it is more global than you think. it inspires and hows you that people and the common universal laws are beyond the laws that are created by the country rulers. such rulers only care about their own power, security of this power and themselves, not about the people. as the main hero said: it is impossible to care and love people from the office you sit in, you need to be there, with them to be a true leader. when you watch the movie there is one thought that follows you all over the other thoughts: if this is possible in one village it can be done globally in respect to human rights and the people and nations that are placed in the similar circumstances. everything is possible if the truth is on your side.
GOOD OL' FREDA NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 6.5/10
no, it's not frida kahlo. she is freda, a secretary of beatles, their "sister", their secrets' keeper and confident, unbelievably loyal and devoted friend. her story is witty and tender, you can still see the young and happy girl that had a great chance to work next to famous giants of music and amazingly interesting personalities of John, Paul, George and Ringo...nice memories, good thoughts and very exciting to watch as Freda shares these memories first time in 50 years! accompanied by original Beatles recordings this movie is just excellent not only for the group lovers but also to the ones who love to hear a bit of history of music classics.
BANKLADY - AUDI FESTIVAL OF GERMAN FILMS NEW website RATE: 10/10
Hände hoch und gib mir alles, was Sie Geld! danke und haben Sie einen schönen Tag! When you are in the newspapers and you rob banks you become a real hero - common people support you as in their eyes it is nice to rob the institution that robs people and nations. they apploud you as in their eyes you had the guts to do it - you must be brave and yes! but wait... there is no end to the thief's action, he will be a Robin Hood ill he kills and innocent victim by accident: a pensioner or a wound young lady... then the hero turns into a criminal. there is no justice for this crime - it is a real crime when you kill an innocent soul. as watch the movie our attentions turns from supporting the robbers to blaming them as you here the voice inside you head: guys, enough is enough. but they do not have greed. it is something else that it driving them. if you ever got addicted to something (smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, compulsive shopping or even using drugs) there is a feeling that people get attached to - in this case of robbery it s an adrenalin rush: danger and victory - feeling high is like a narcotic. it is very hard for them to stop. they get addicted to the feeling actors get addicted to theater and stage. it is almost a sickness, it is a sickness that usually sticks to the people whose house life is very mid and boring and they need a wake up to feel alive. it is a scary game that usually has a bad ending unless your heart is still pure, your core is clear and you are ready to change for someone you love... the atmosphere of 60-s is filmed amazingly well... the music selection is superb, the camera work is magnificent... what else - the actors are real and natural, the story is funny and dramatic!
LAST DAYS HERE NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 7/10
if you are an artist and you are talented you probably a;ready know that no matter what you create if your creations are not seen by the world and not reflected in the others they are an empty sound on the top on the lonely mountain. the artists love to be recognised and want to be heard and adored by public. this is a common sense. loveless world creates emptiness of the heart. the movie is about a rock star of the group called PENTAGRAM. he is a hopeless drag addict that has his ups and downs, his parents are apparently very rich as they support him in millions dollars he spends on himself. he is talented but his bad habits keep him away from the public, good contracts, rock fans and music world. the way of the weak may sometimes keep him from the path of fame leading to self destruction and self abuse. it is very painful to see how the talented soul is dying in front of your eyes. will love and a new born child save him? if not then his child might also follow his steps creating a pattern that will be hard to break unless the power is place.
LAST TRAIN HOME NEW DVD - kind courtesy of ANTIDOTE FILMS website RATE: 10/10
it is a real modern life: the life of one family in china. the year of hard work is finishing and families and workers migrate back to their homes for new year celebration. long hours and night shifts are behind, late dinners from the old bowl, someone's children running around on the factory floor while the workers are occupied with their day orders, the nights are restless too - very simple life behind the dirty curtains with old holes.is it sad? it is tragic... makes you THINK. but not only this: with their money it is also hard to get a ticket back to their village as everyone wants to go home in this season: the crowd is endless, the eyes are tolerant, the guards are cold. it is s a heart breaking picture as it reminded me of our years in Russia, not to such extend but pretty similar. the village brings fresh air, calm, meeting with kids that the parents dd not see for the whole year: young and old relatives. the nature is beautiful but the demands and money earning struggle brings them back to the cities. there are of curse parents and children complex relationship. parents ever telling you to study and work hard (so familiar!) and you are not good enough for them and for the society... the film covers three years and the end of the story does not bring any more hope... ,may be their children see the bright future when hard work will brig wealth and prosperity, respect to the elders and easy life to the children but there is a strong doubt to that... this movie told us so much about unseen life of common chinese family struggling for survival in the modern world. there are several stories told in the movie: life of the old people in the village, working young parents in the factories and their young children , some still studying at schools , some are grown up and ready to fly away from the nest. the stories are very emotional and different but all very associative and easy to compare with our own lives : better or worse. society in its roots seeking money, exploiting people beyond human understanding fails in its attempts to save the most valuable part of our lives: FAMILY. there is nothing that can be done to repair the damage made and no one tries to repair it as it falls apart... or can it still be repaired?.. is it still now the last train home for some family members?..
what a typical dilemma for the history to decide: system created evil or a person/individual who follows the system orders and becomes a link that executes the evil orders? who is guilty? how to judge? who is judging? is there a point in judging? i always remember a couple of postulates watching these types of movies: 1. the system defends no people living in this system, it only protects and defends itself to save its own power 2. power is corrupt by definition. the power creates evil, the power changes its methods of manipulating its slaves and does everything to look clean for its slaves. the methods of manipulation can include dividing people by their wealth, nationality, country of origins, languages spoken etc etc... the slogan of those in power is: divide and conquer! it is easier to manipulate small groups of people that are arguing rather than the ones that have common spiritual knowledge (as knowledge is the power stronger than any other power) 3. the winner writes the history 4. human factor means nothing when the orders are given: there are no guilty people in war - just soldiers who kill when they are given orders to kill. 5. an individual that kills is a criminal; the king that kills is a hero; the soldier that kills the most becomes a general. there is no crime in this case if the killing is executed by the orders of those in power. 6. the government powers can change and the heroes can become criminals and vise versa. 7. Hannah is not right nor she is wrong in her opinion. in the situations like hers it is better sometimes to keep neutral but she is brave enough to express her opinion and create enemies even among people from her nation 8. i hate political movies!!!!

ANY DAY NOW NEW RATE: 10/10
there lived a boy named Marco. he loved the bed time stories with happy ending but his own story was different from his dream... yes, it is a powerful movie about relationship, love, bonds and family... but there is a more powerful story: about the blindness of the law , more like not the law but the people who serve it as not the human feelings drive them but dry facts, common postulates and doctrines. and who is there to change them? all of us! as the laws are made not to serve PEOPLE but to serve the system and this is what is sad as at the and it is not about the small boy Marco, Marco who "...didn't ask to be born to a junkie, he didn't ask to be different... " but about the world around him and what suited him right and what not. children are always just a property for parents - nothing else. they are speechless items that wait for their destiny to be shaped but not by them - by someone who owns them: the system or sometimes the parents who do not appreciate what they have and they don't understand the value of them not even until... simply never! there is one thing we as parents need to remember: we love them, our children but they love us more! never be afraid to love asa you have nothing to loose except yourself... smallish note: the movie reminded us THE DALLAS BUYERS CLUB movie. 10 stars!
THE GIRL WITH NINE WIGS NEW Heute bin ich blond website Audi Festival of German Films (Goethe-Institut Australien) RATE: 8/10
she is young , amazingly sexually attractive and smart. she has a good family and her life is happy and light like a flight of a butterfly on a sunny day above the blooming flowers. everyone loves her. but will they still love her when the scary diagnosis comes into picture, will they still be on her side till the end? are they going to support her every move, her every breath? how will she, herself react on the horrible news? how will she fight? with courage and devotion? with an easy going attitude or the thought will let her down? is she stronger than her illness?
cancer changes people. it turns us inside out, it changes the space around us, it alters the toe flow around us. and it shows us our true selves. it is almost impossible to imagine how is it, to live on the edge, when the axe is hanging above your head ready to land any minute unexpectedly, when your body is not within your control anymore with its sleepless nights seasoned with vomits and even such days are counted... when you look in the mirror and you see yourself dying slowly... but you start worshiping every single moment of your life, joy becomes not a luxury but an everyday necessity (it is inexplainable but it is true); everything around you becomes deeply significant and insignificant at the same time and it is not black and white anymore - just brightly colored. it becomes existential in the most extreme way, your life hanging on the tip of your hair...
i still believe that what was pictured in the movie is still very very mild compared to some real conditions and it was smoothed down..
THE BLACK BROTHER Die schwarzen Brüder website Audi Festival of German Films (Goethe-Institut Australien) RATE: 7/10
It is a family movie and it is almost a fairy tale, a little bit naive but adventurous and very well done, I would say a gentle blend of Charles Dickens, Harry Potter, H-C Andersen and Mark Twain in their best traditions. Good and evil on one side and and their ever battle on the other. It is fun to watch (I loved the part with a frying pan and how it actually ended), and there were lots of other funny moments. There is death, there are small victories, and of course noble fighting for the truth. There are very good actors and the movie overall is very dynamic. I really loved the nature scenes that were done beautifully. It is a 19th century tale but the child trafficing and child labor theme sounds more like a modern world issue. I guess the world has not changed at all... but there is nothing to decide - just enjoy the lovely story and the freedom path it shows you - in uniting, pure hearts and love.

British Columbia, late 19th century, gold rush.., People travel up North for their luck and more luck and even more luck... But YOU are not sitting at home and watching the movie - you are down there with them, riding one of the horses, loaded with sentimental things (that are light to carry), food, guns warm blankets and fresh water. You trust only one person - yourself as there is no one else to trust. You are surrounded by wilderness, sometimes by wolves, but even wolfs are not that scary compared to people. This is a journey of your life-time, your first one to Telegraph Creek, and may it is your last one... It is tougher than you though in the first place as anything can happen on your way there: your money can be stolen, your food supplies might end, you might break your hand or get into a wild bear trap that rips apart flesh and crashes bones, your mind might take what is going on around you, or it might only one crazy bullet... May be one of Jack London's characters travels with you too... He eats the from the same pot with you and he sleeps in your tent - who knows?..Your road lies through forests and creeks, through unpaved paths up and down the mountains and through the sacred lands of Indian tribes...but the main road , the main journey is in your heart and how you make it is more important than any other roads you travel. There are only 7 or 8 of you in the group. It is not about the physical pain -the psychological drama revealed seems much more painful and its scales are vaster than Canada and North America, they are vaster than the earth itself... It is the world where death is a casualty and the wounds never get healed unless they help you to amputate them with your limbs...But no one talks about any wounds, as a matter of fact no one talks at all... You find out about the characters through their actions and deeds as nature does not have ears, it does not even have feelings, it is speechless too.... We travel down the river, closer to Dawson, and closer to gold and happiness... The trip looks endless... Is there going to be light at the end of the tunnel that sucks them all in: what is the power - greed? adventure? fear? may be all of that... or may be just impossibility of returning home as there is nothing waiting for you there... It sounds like a chess game to me - pawns, kings, rooks and bishops are left behind and the last remaining figure turns into a queen... oh yes, sorry and one black knight survives... Tough game with tough rules and no chess board - just lives under the blue Alaskian sky... but the winner takes it all.... This is Western German style for you and
*I was soooo glad they did not meet one single real wild bear over there ... may be one will wait for them, but the Golden Bear instead...
VENUS IN FUR - ALLIANCE FRANCAISE FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL La Vénus à la fourrure website RATE: 100/10
that's a movie to be watched twice or even more times. a movie of a genus creator. one word: BATTLE OF SEXES. there are some thoughts: 1. it is incredible how with minimum actors, with minimum change of decorations (not including the two actors dressing and undressing constantly till the moment we all were waiting for at the end of the movie. it takes a mind of a master to create an art piece of the highest grade with a minimum of physical attributes given (again: I mean a number of actors and no changes in the surroundings)... 2. just a small note: the cinema was full to the extend that arrived one hour before the movie start time we got the LAST TWO TICKETS!!! Well, I could predict it would be popular but not in such way! SOLD OUT! 3. coming back to #1 of minimalism... when the director is giving himself such limits - they should be substituted by excellent script, talent of the performers and the messages hidden in the plot. 4. task #3 is completed with an ease of an expert 5. IMHO it is very hard to film a theater performance (blend with live lines some sort of illusion/play and realit) especially the one that changes and turns in unexpected way. theater can be boring to film if you do not know what you are doing.. 6. task #5 - solved with a wave of a whip, or should i say with agression of the power projected by a brilliant director. 7. the movie is impossible to re-tell - it is not speak-able, like Fellini's "City of Women" or Peter Greenaway's "Prospero's Books". you can not tell - you can only feel it 8. breathless cinema theater... with occasional laughter from excited women - this is it! but not really - you will never know how it ends unless you watch it. 9. as I mentioned the movie has to be watched twice at least to read subtitles in the first place, then to observe the actors' performance - HE is acting with his eyes and mimics sometimes the words are not required, she is gifted in all the ways one woman should be!
unneeded addition:, probably even repeating myself THEATER (in it's best expression of sanity and insanity stealing souls and giving life) - pure indulgence of flowing words over thoughts and acting over words! Roman Polanski's another masterpiece... i found a subliminal blend of Fellini (in sur) and Peter Greenaway (in visual but more on the side of modest costume changes dressing and undressing permanently) - the best comparison i could come up with as i am still under the impression...
"If I can't enjoy the full and total happiness of love, then I want to drain its torments, its tortures to the dregs; then I want the woman I love to mistreat me, betray me, and the more cruelly the better. That too is a pleasure." - Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in Fur
"I saw sensuality as sacred, indeed the only sacredness, I saw woman and her beauty as divine since her calling is the most important task of existence: the propagation of the species. I saw woman as the personification of nature, as Isis, and man as her priest, her slave; and I pictured her treating him as cruelly as Nature, who, when she no longer needs something that has served her, tosses it away, while her abuses, indeed her killing it, are its lascivious bliss." - Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in Fur "It is merely the egoism of the man, who wants to bury a woman like a treasure. All attempts at using vows, contracts, and holy ceremonies have failed to bring permanence into the most changeable aspect of changeable human existence, namely love." - Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in Fur
"Despite all the progress of civilization, women have remained exactly as they emerged from the hand of Nature." - Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in Fur
"Love knows no virtue, no merit; it loves and forgives and tolerates everything because it must. We are not guided by reason, nor do the assets or blemishes that we discover tempt us to devotion or intimidate us. It is a sweet, mournful, mysterious power that drives us, and we stop thinking, feeling, wishing, we let ourselves drift along and never ask where we are drifting." - Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in Fur
"Pleasure alone makes existence worthwhile. A pleasure-seeker has a difficult time parting from life." - Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in Fur
Vanda (as Dunayev): I don't need your respect, excuse me. I'll take happiness. My happiness, not society's happiness. I will love a man who pleases me, and please a man who makes me happy--but only as long as he makes me happy, not a moment longer.”
“Vanda (as Dunayev): I am a pagan. I am a Greek. I love the ancients not for their pediments or their poetry, but becausein their world Venus could love Paris one day and Anchises the next. Because they're not the moderns, who live in their mind, and because they're the opposite of Christians, who live on a cross. I don't live in my mind, or on a cross. I live on this divan. In this dress. In these stockings and these shoes. I want to live the way Helen and Aspasia lived, not the twisted women of today, who are never happy and never give happiness. Who won't admit that they want love without limit. Why should I forgo any possible pleasure, abstain from any sensual experience? I'm young, I'm rich, and I'm beautiful and I shall make the most of that. I shall deny myself nothing.

overall opinion from the media opening event: excellent and strong movie selection it is a journey of his lifetime: he is young German boy turning 17 right in the heart of Morocco where his father has a theater premiere, more like a an exposure of European culture to the Arab world. but he, the young led is a rebellion. "i see something in you.." comments his boarding teach when he leaves for his holiday and unites with his dad. he is not intending to stay with his dad and follow him on his boring "cultural exposure". he wants to be out there by himself and experience life as it faces him: with the face of love represented by a... local prostitute (?), face of freedom by smoking dope (yes?) and the face of power by removing his teeth braces, hiring skis to ski down the sand dunes, throws away his mobile re-charger and his medicine. The young guy needs to make his hands and his white color dirty to understand what life tastes like: it can be bitter like blood from his finger and sweet like a kiss under the stars... you can not slow it down, you can not rush it up - it flows through your fingers like that hot Moroccan desert's yellow and speechless sand . no, he is not an ordinary guy...
there is another line: father and son. would they understand each other, is it really required after so many years of their separation? will the older one allow the young one to drive his own life as he allowed him the steering wheel n the middle of the desert? is the time together worth it?
but wait - there is another also very well developed story tine: if his dad accepts his son's high testosterone years how does the son accepts hid dad's women's choices and his dad's new family? is there ever be peace between sons and dads in the world?
the actors are brilliant, the environment calls to go travelling again: Morocco, Israel, Iran... all such amazing countries in the nature beauty: the desert is so rich with its colors, the culture is so rich with its traditions, music and art.
it is not over heavy, over dramatic as most German movies are, it also not too light (not very French) - it is just in the middle - just right!
AUDI FESTIVAL OF GERMAN FILMS
Life’s No Piece of Cake | Das Leben ist nichts für Feiglinge literal translation: LIFE IS NOT FOR COWARDS website RATE: 8/10
it is a tragicomedy although it looked like a 90% comedy to me. or should I say - it is more like tears from laughter rather then laughter from tears. but definitely very entertaining film she is Kim, a teenager, a satanist rough angry and agressive from the outside but very kind, soft and gorgeous on the inside girl her grandmother is terminally ill, old but "young in heart" and funny Kim's father Markus was always the backbone of the family, strong and protective as man should be - till they lost their ground, their beautiful space, their family's feminine part - Kim's mother dies tragically in an weird accident. there are families, families, families everywhere - they all seem nice and happy but they all have imperfections and issues: father and daughter, parents and grown ups, rude and ungrateful sons who do not respect the authorities, there are mother and son relationship, grandparents and grandchildren - the list goes on and on... and dont forget the extended family: friends and more friends... how do we love and care for each other, what is more important for us: ourselves or those around us... why do we find power to laugh, still laugh when we see someone's tragic situation. how can we make it so it all grows back together? will it ever? there are lots of unexpected moments of happiness and self realisation in relationship when they are deep and trusting, not the ones you take for granted and not the ones you believe will not last forever... there are lots of comical situations: the one in travel agency gives you suggestions what you can do in certain circumstances with nasty travel agents; there are also very funny suggestions how o answer the calls from annoying telemarketing companies and the list goes on and on... the movie is a total pleasure to watch and have a good laugh as it lifts your spirit as at the end of the day what matters is just your spirit and positive attitude to life. there is basically nothing else as any situation can be looked at from different perspective... indeed... it is also worth noting a very tasteful music selection that really makes the movie very special...
our thoughts... there are some movies when you come back from them you have nothing to talk about... just it is something about nothing. the director a bit overdone with lots of scene exposing the old man's body and it is not about its attractiveness or not attractiveness. it is more about overdoing it. like someone is showing it into your face trying to say: have a look - this IS ugly. so what? the beauty is not in the body. these people ARE passionate and it is in the culture and it is very pleasant to observe. but i look at the woman and i think: Gloria are you right in your head at 68 years old? this man IS an idot, cant YOU see it too in the first place? why do you keep trusting him going out with him on stupid holiday... oh, well, nay it is my mood today... but Alex had the same vision... he criticized the most the primitive poem the old man reads to Gloria that he has written at this age (???) - the man could not be shallower than this... the music selection is nice though - lots of spanish and italian (old song of Umberto Tozzi's Gloria) ... the movie develops very slow at the beginning and takes off at the end with a good tempo, but it still does not save it. apart from some nice moments dancing and good music there is no salvation... it is light though and entertaining...
short review 1. it's tender but slow to the extend when you start thinking: it's a movie guys, it's no life; what's the point? 2. it's funny but strange; there are too many absurd moments that you simply dont understand: what are they trying to say? are we stupid not to understand simple things? are we too smart not to understand very complicated things? 3. the actors are a bit weak, even Jeff Goldblum with his energy and charm does not save them... 4, the overall opinion after watching: "so what?" - no feelings, no point; my heart did not embrace it... 5. one more recommendation: when you go to watch the movie please eat, drink and smoke, as the food and the wine are very nicely pictured there...
our thoughts: 1. a bit boring movie sometimes even revolting with religious restricting especially when the young 12 years old boy talks about bomb suicidal people. the other revolting moment: when the money the girl has won honestly were sent to Palestine without even her permission. students-girls can not hold hands at school (what??) 2. very strange family relationship (second wife marriage, a bit fake and not drawn in full colors) 3. some psychological moments are not clear: the moment with two girls committing "sins". 4, technically the film work is a bit weak and poor. not a good quality camera work 5. what I liked: Wadjda's mother telling her how to read Koran - "you should talk like you sing, neglecting the surroundings, just let your heart sing..." It reminded me of my mum teaching me to do public speaking. There are also some good funny moments and emotional moments too... 6. simply nothing else to add as apart of new and interesting life style we could not find anything for us in this movie (it was 5 from Alex and 7 from Natasha)
oh, god... what can I say... it's very hard to rate the movie which is not your type... it contains lots of hidden clever messages though: political, religious and many others - we discussed it on the way back. good to have Alex's view too... but for him as for me ii is very hard to judge such movie... It will be of interest for teenagers and people who adore computer games and fights, buildings being destroyed and people get killed (digitally). We found it boring neglecting the movie excellent graphical solutions and amazingly done fight scenes. The movie did not make any sense for both of us, nor it has left a trace in our souls.. sorry...
they are innocent and helpless like our kids, they trust us, the people more than your closest friends do. they are animals that are cruelly left without shelters after heavy forestation in Indonesia. the deforestation is done there illegally. Well, you can call it legal as we all know how it is done. Natural resources at the beginning belonged to the nation, to all the people on earth, in this particular country. the government sells it without a permission pocketing bribes and wasting national resources. the large corporations buy out the rights to destroy what they think it theirs: mining, deforestating, poisoning and exhausting the land that belongs to all of us... well, I am not the one to tell you the common stories here. the movie is about awareness... they are the real young people from all over the world , volunteers who rise to help the issue: they come up with a smart plan: 1. make sure people who buy the products from palm oil plantations are aware where the oil comes from and who suffers because of its manufacturing. the awareness is supposed to eliminate the product demand and reduce the market demands meaning the companies that are damaging the environment will not have the business running smooth and effortless 2. to replace the palm oil palms plantations with sugar palms plantations as safe alternative 3, and the most important art (which I believe is the biggest challenge) make sure that the government is not corrupt and that everything is done for the people and for the nation not for the wide pockets of the individuals who the people voted for to protect them. this is IMHO the hardest part as it happens everywhere with everything you touch the government is not there for us but against many of the people who selected it - it mainly works for itself, to make sure they are as a government are safe and secure , they make sure that they are the power not the people whom they temporarily represent... i have to say that the group of young people are challenged with a 100 days project - they face their own fears, tears, animals left without forests (their homes to live in) and these animals' eyes, hard physical labor, emotions, dirt on the road, tropical rains, unbearable conditions of living ... their perspective changes - everything they thought was important in a real world is not now! I believe this is the right way to change something... you want the change - get up and change it! dont talk about it - act. see where your money go to when you do a donation. y donate to cancer cure medicine development 0 go to cancer ward in the hospital - take a look a the people, talk to the doctors, you will find out more than you think... you want to help wild life - go there and see for your self! this is the only way - act, initialise something useful... the government and their corruption will not change unless you stand up for yourself and the people. I consider these young group of people very brave and very smart in their plans and decisions. Good on them!
12 YEARS A SLAVE RATE: 10/10 the movie is not good - it is simply three words: excellent, brilliant, great! I am not surprised as you will see lots of big names in the cast list: talented Chiwetel Ejiofor as main Benedict Cumberbatch Brad Pitt Paul Giamatti etc etc I simply said to myself such names would not waste their time if it was not for a higher purpose. Slavery in 1840-s when innocent rich and already free black americans were sold once again to the South to work on the cotton and cane plantations... is there justice in this world at all? The movie is based on a true story... may be we all should open our eyes an ears and have a look at what has changed nowadays? Do we experience the same situations now? May be you will notice there are slaves in this society, there are people-slaves and there are nations-slaves. It is impossible to watch the film with your eyes wide open as some moments are so heart breaking you will not like them, but they are truth that we all have to face... and the story is for the universal truth to come out soon... no matter what... a must to see for every intelligent human being.
way too many thoughts to write in one short paragraph. no showing off , no ego, just very simple down to earth movie with love of two girls and issues around this love story. the end of the movie showed "part 1" - i hope there will be part 2 coming soon... there are a couple of notes to share: 1. camera and camera close ups are amazingly done - so sur0realistic and real-istic - just top class! 2. the main actress is the best: so innocent like a child, so beautiful like a teenager and so sexy as a woman. 3. girls, when you watch the movie - get your hankechieves close as you will be crying so touching some mments are 4. i tool 0.5 off as some parts seem a bit too long (3 hours part 1!!!!)... but from the other side they get you into the mood if feeling here and now. 5. beautiful details captured: happy oak tree when the girls kiss first and the falling leaves from the same tree when there is loneliness surrounding one of them... and much more like associations at the kinder-garden. kissing with the sun on the background is breathtaking scene etc etc... 6. stunning work of stylists and make-up artists: so natural and so attractive 7. fantastic music selection 8. explicitly anatomic and fleshy bed scenes 9. pay a special attention at the hair-dos of both girls: poetically messy hair of one and changing styles of the other... 10. lots of deep thoughts and philosophy talks, talks about art etc whch I adored the most 12. poetry reading and books reading is soooooo fenomenally well done during the class teaching: so clever incorporated in the main story... that makes it so special! 13. same sex couple facing the reality of the rude intrusion into their private life by the friends, misunderstanding and limit-minded crowd surrounding them sometimes... but their happiness together from the other side... 14. will we ever understand what love really is??? 15. ...more comments to come...
quotes: Emma: I have infinite tenderness for you, and I will my whole life...quotes from Sartre but not De Beauvoir; one wonders if Kechiche is even aware of the queer woman existentialist philosopher, and if he would include her if he were.
NO NEED POEM (by Alain Bosquet): The elephant's trunk is for picking up pistachios: no need to bend over. The giraffe's neck is for grazing on stars: no need to fly. The chameleon's skin, green, blue, lavender, white, as it wishes, is for hiding from ravenous animals: no need to flee. The turtle's shell, is for sleeping inside, even in winter: no need for a house. The poet's poem, is for saying all of that and a thousand thousand thousand other things: no need to understand.
The feature debut of writer/director Simon J. Dutton, THE DAY OF THE BROKEN stars Greg Fleet. Justina Noble, Peter Finlay, Lawrence Mooney and Simon J. Dutton and tells the story of a mother who has lost her child to the most appalling crime. The police are compromised, the private investigator she hired has disappeared. Her only hope of retribution is to contact the man she swore would never be part of life.
Over a slow-burning 24 hours, we pass through the lives of seven lost souls, all damaged and all strangely linked to each other and the terrible events that are about to unfold.
Shot in and around Melbourne and laced with pitch-black humour, this is tough, intelligent and uncompromising cinema with powerhouse performances and a brilliant score by Norwegian artists DEAF CENTER.

i was not able to understand what is going on for the first 20 minutes of the movie - thanks to Alex to explained to stupid and ignorant me. if you are into Maths you should well know that Mobius strip is a surface with only one side and only one boundary component meaning in practice it can be easily be created by taking a paper strip and giving it a half-twist, and then joining the ends of the strip together to form a loop. if you start drawing on such surface a line that goes parallel to the side of the strip eventually to get to the other side of the strip without crossing the boarder. the association is obvious - this movie is about political and economical international spies who work for both sides. imagine two people of the same profession - two-sides meet and fall in love. this is when the movie really takes off... it would be weak and dry without beautiful Cecile de France who saves any movie from falling apart. Jean Dujardin is hot but not as good as an actor IMHO. It is a Russian French movie with lots of language jumping from Russian to French and to English with some Russian music on the background. Some political figures featured in the movie are easy to guess and they play a vital role in the movie plot. I also believe that this movie will be interesting to watch people who like political detectives and short romances.
