RATE: 5/10

review coming up soon...
Michael Madsen stars in “classic” true-crime thriller DEATH IN THE DESERT, coming home this February

Death in the Desert, inspired by the true crime book by Cathy Scott, and starring internationally-acclaimed actor Michael Madsen, comes to VOD February 16 from Osiris Entertainment.

Michael Madsen “steals the show” (Examiner.com) in a “classic” and “captivating” thriller (The Huffington Post) inspired by the real-life murder of casino tycoon Ted Binion.

Legendary casino owner Ray Easler (Madsen, The Hateful Eight) gets more than he bargained for when his live-in girlfriend falls for the hired help.  What results is a mystery a deck of cards long, and a finale that’ll shock like the largest of losses.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Josh Evans, Death in the Desert available February 16
 on VOD.

I suddenly understood why I love all Quentin Tarantino's movies so much - they all have that "Woody-Allen's" unpredictable turns and twists that makes our lives so interesting. We plan something in such perfection that god keeps laughing at us. When the perfectly organised plan is destroyed by a smart "negro", a nasty blizzard or say, a sign "mo Mexicans or dogs" that is hanged with no apparent reason. We keep laughing at our stupidity and we understand that the movie is damn good, funny nevertheless it has way too much blood, gun kicked out brains.

I almost started yelling out loud from excitement when I saw a scenery with the filmed horses drawn so perfectly in the best quality leather girths: "Leonardo DiCaprio, why are you not in this film? Oh, I see these horses are passing you by when you are dying in Revenant movie next to the same creek and Alejandro Gonzalez is saying harshly: episode 5 part 1 - "Hugh, cross the creek, but please do not freeze, never give up as we do not have any other actor like you!"  and Leo yells back at him: "I can see the horses from Tarantino's movie! Should I swap teams?" Or perhaps all the mountains and all the creeks look alike in America...

Please go and see the movie - it is a master piece, a real super western classical plus cinematography! You will not stop laughing and you will leave the theater with the blood on your sleeve - I promise!

One more question I have to Quentin Tarantino: where did he find so much snow, so many ugly people, so messy artificial brains and so many guns?

I believe there is a certain audience for every movie. I believe this movie was not something that we would like to put on our shelves of "good to see films". The jokes are old, rude and stupid (to put it in a soft way). The language is something that you would like to listen to if you absolutely adore "f" word jokes after each word. That was the first movie in the last 3 years that I simply did not want to continue to see. Alex left the cinema and waited for me outside. The movie is not the one to make your soul sing nor it is the one to make to LOL as I can hardly call it a comedy. I have never seen Zaxk Zaffran in any movies before and I do not think I will ever go to see anything with him. I feel sorry for Robert De Niro as he is a brilliant actor and I did not see the reason for him to participate in something that does not have a plot nor anything else to comment about.  Just a shame...

THE BLACK BALLOON NEW
review by Jeanette Russel
DVD - kind courtesy of Icon Films

RATE: 9/10

The Black balloon is a moving story of a family who have a lot to contend with. It is set in the early 90s. There are 2 sons and one has down syndrome and ADD. It gives us a glimpse of how having a child with special support needs effects the family, but mainly it is shown through Thomas's eyes who is Charlie's brother. The film portrays Thomas's journey as he trys to accept the way Charlie is. While Thomas can at times be compassionate and sensitive towards Charlie. He still harbours feelings of anger and resentment towards him. These feelings and the way he deals with some of the life situations seems to leave him feeling guity and very fustrated. Thomas is played by Rhys Wakefield and as it is his first feature film; he does a terrific and realistic job of playing a self conscious teen trying to deal with his family life. Elissa Down had her first experience of directing a feature film and did an outstanding job. She also co-produced and wrote the plot. So many sensitive and dramatic issues are covered in the film. All the actors did a stellar job. Particularly Toni Collette who plays Mum Maggie, and is the epiomy of a mother who is selfless, cares, is so empathetic and relates beautifully and lovingly to all family members. She is the family glue. All performances were great. This is an authentic, at times graphic, and comedic representation of family life. I really enjoyed the film and the brilliant and true to life preformances. 9 out of 10 is what I give the movie.

SPOTLIGHT NEW

RATE: 10/10.

Be prepared as this movie will send some nasty shivers down your spine. After this movie you might think twice weather to get your kid introduced to a religion that promotes celibacy to its leaders and gods representatives. Dear God! If you could only hear and if only you knew all the criminal acts your appointed "agents" did during all those thousands of years preaching to people being modest and at the same they collected gold in their palaces' basements, they preached to their followers being fare and honest and they were taking away our lands from us, they asked people being kind and they were letting certain countries into disasters of wars , hunger and poverty, they were preaching generosity to us and they were killing our children.  God if only you could see - you would fall down from heaven and break your neck! But the point is not in that only Boston region had 279 priests who were caught molesting young boys and girls, it is about the whole corrupt system that goes up to the most respected religious leaders, the system that has not done anything about it thinking they were all above god's laws , who were b=never questioned and judged, nor they were jailed for what they did. Dear God! Te script for this movie was on the shelves for too long...
But what I am asking: why all of a sudden the Church tried to show its real face for us? Are their any changes in that lolly-pop of religion that is given to us instead of true and genuine spirituality? Are there any changes they pan to do from inside ? perhaps the name will change but the institution will remain. It brought way too many sweet apples to refuse from its benefits. One of our friends once said:  "those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven.." How true!
You may say: If I can not find peace, spirituality and love in religious institution where can I find it? I believe we all have to look inside our hearts and ask this question again? really...where?

Just for the note: all actors are absolutely incredible , especially Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton are beyond any expectations! Good on you, the whole crew

LOOKING FOR GRACE NEW

RATE: 6.5/10

Looking For Grace movie will be released on January 26, Australia Day. This is a great time for this movie to see the world as the film is very "Australian": including good actors' crew and the director. We had a great opportunity to see the media and red carpet premiere of the movie (the event covered by Stuart Buchnan's photos) and to see the producers and the actors of the movie live on stage for Q&A before the premiere. We found however the story line a bit weak and slow, some parts of the acting raw somehow or not thought through well. The movie could be fit in 10 min of a striking short film that would be powerful enough to awake the country instead it was full of unnecessary parts that made it falling apart I would say softly. Neglecting this I gave it 8 out of 10 as I liked the feelings of Australian nature and somehow the drama was so simple as death itself - it stroke me, Alex's rate was 5/10 which made a our total mark.
What can I say? The movie will not leave you untouched, but you will be the one to decide if it was good or not so good, so I recommend to go and watch it.

Frank Martin is a former special-ops mercenary who is now transporting classified packages for some very dodgy people. Franks father gets caught up in the web by being held ransom on more than one occasion.

AT first I found the movie laughable. The acting and scenes were so over the top. In their effort to be slick and chic, the result was nauseating. But as I progressed into the storyline, I found that acting matched the storyline perfectly. Three women with no money or technical know how, somehow manage to pull of the heist of the century against their Russian pimps.

My suggestion, do not over analyse this movie. Go with your teenage children who will enjoy the car chases etc while you enjoy the richness and splendour of France.

Here is my review of Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.

Full disclosure, I am an avid Sherlock Fan. Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are back together again but this time with a twist. We are transported back to London in 1890. Now you have two of my loves being played together, history and Sherlock!

In true Sherlock style, this movie length episode moves at a rapid pace that you wonder if you are ever going to keep up with the storyline. Not only is the movie set in 1890, it also intertwines to present day. And this is done majestically I must add.

The Abominable Bride somehow manages to come back from the dead and kills her husband, or does she?

There is so much more to the storyline that a simple unsolved crime, that becomes solved as the movie progresses. Suffragettes, subservience, cocaine use in the 1890’s and more is touched on.

Humorous parts that had the whole family laughing, mystery abound and brilliant acting. A great movie I highly recommend.

ORANGES AND SUNSHINE Based on a true story Oranges and Sunshine is the story of children who were poor, homeless or orphaned who found themselves being relocated to Australia. Some were promised Oranges and Sunshine, a better life, which proved to be far from the case. The movie is based on a novel called Empty Cradles by Margaret Humphries, who was the actual social worker to discover the scandel of children being sent to Australia not for a better life but to work as child slave labour in institiutions and sometimes for the christian brothers. Most unfortunately many of the children were abused. Some of the young ones were told that their parents were dead or had abandoned them, which in many cases was inaccurate. Margaret selflessly took on the work of bringing these atrocites to light and reuniting families. Many prize actors are in this film, and several won awards. A heartfelt and emotional story of how some of these now adult children try to come to terms with their ordeals, and also try to reconnect with lost family member across the seas. Believing it to be a story of courage, sacrifice, and showing the strength of the human spirit. I give it 9/10.

I was looking forward to this movie but was little disappointed. I cant understand why it's received so many positive reviews. To me it was confusing, cliched and pretentious. What was the point of the Emily Blunt character? She might just as well not been in the film. Prisoners and particularly incendies were very good, engrossing works. Just silly. I thought it was wonderfully filmed, and the main 4 actors are all excellent, but God it was as bleak and depressing a film as I have seen for a long, long time. So depressing that it kind of ruined my enjoyment

You can call the sun beautiful, you can call the rain sad. What do you call the fog? The fog is just there: it can be thick or wet but there are no such feelings that we put into fog description.
Carol is like a fog - the movie is there, it is not sad, it is not that beautiful either although the emotions are strong and Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are sensational! Alex mentioned that he does not have any comments: there are only feelings in this movie, you can not put them into words. It was  from him and 8 from myself. Adding to the movie excellent camera work and very good soundtrack.... but still thinking this is not enough to define the movie...

I believe kids will love this comedy: it has some good laughs, funny dogs and fast moving actors. The idea is brilliant: what if you had a super powers: what would you change in your life? Should you ask the girl you were chasing to worship you? How will it make you feel? May be now you will hate her for this? Who knows? Or may be you ask that girls living next door to you to invite you out and fall in love with you? May be you will ask your boss to like you more? Don't you think we like think world because it challenges us to create and not to get everything we want at the same second. We will never value the things we get for granted/ We rather value something we deserve with our hard labor and persistence. but not easily gained with the magical wave of a hand.  the things are always the way they should be and nothing else.

The Program will give you a front row seat into the life of Lance Armstrong, once a 7-Time winner of the Tour de France. Most of you would know of the demise of Armstrong, despite his arrogance to admit to doping initially.

This movie is based on the book by Irish journalist, David Walsh and his book Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong. Walsh was one of the few people who questioned the sudden rise in physique and skill displayed by Armstrong.

Starring Ben Foster (and not Ben Affleck as suggested during the time of Armstrong’s fame) I found myself immersed as the story folded from beginning to end.

This is a story of not only Armstrong deluding the general public and getting away with it, but also the whole bike racing world. Corruptness that allowed Armstrong to do what he did without question. It makes us all look at ourselves and what part we play in wanting only the best of our athletes. After all they are only human, yet we demand records to be broken, goals scored and players to be machines.

Cinema photography was fantastic. Seeing the Tour de France path, with its majestic views and winding roads around mountaintops was awesome.

I found the acting realistic, and the storyline flowed very well.

A must see for all sporting enthusiasts.

A famous Russian cartoon character from "The Last Year's Snow Was Falling Down": says:
"sometimes it's super-fine,
but sometimes it's a bad design"
("То вроде лепится, а то не нелепица...").
When it is super-fine may t is the time to leave it alone and start something else - well, the same story as with Star Wars: three times is enough perhaps. Sherlock series were ALWAYS brilliant and not only because of the bunch of superstar actors but also because of the graphics, camera and sensational plot. The actors are all there! The rest has vanished! It turned into a cake where all the ingredients are right but it does not come together no matter what you try...

I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful and at times breathtaking scenery in this film. The actors did a wonderful job, I felt. The three children filmed were apparently untrained and not professional actors. I thought they gave an outstanding performance. Interestingly based on a true story although apparently all the details do not quite match up. The plot follows the book for the most part which was written by Molly's daughter Doris Pilkington. Following the story of three young girls from the Stolen Generation who were transported from a mission (where their families lived) to a training school 1200 miles away. They manage to get away and make the incredible and enduring journey back to their mother and family. It is a very powerful and moving story. I gave it 9 out of 10.

What is there to say?
When Leonardo Di Caprio is there every movie should be a winner. We could see him reading the script for the first time, nodding his head saying: "well, te plot is very simple to say it in the most polite way, but I have never tried myslef in this amplua. I will say yes" and he did the right choice, there will be no movie without him. He owns every single scene, the audience's eyes are glued to him thinking: how is going to do that? There was not even one fake moment, not one unbelievable blink in his immaculate performance, he proves with every second of his acting he is the true master of the cinematography art. My memories took be back to my daughter's teenage years when she was so fond of him and the rest of the family was thinking that Leo's childish face and toy-boy manners would never conque our hearts and how wrong we were: the first act that I changed my opinion about him was The Departed movie. Since that he never disappointed and grew so much in his power as a mature and extraordinary actor (perhaps one of the the best actors we know).
We should admit all the actors were magnificient in The Revenant but Leonardo was 10 heads higher than anyone else. As I said before there would be no The Revenant movie without him.
Wanted also to pay attention to an excellent camera work and the soundtrack.
As I mentioned before the storyline is not very exciting and all the credit goes to the main character who makes even the weak plot to shine.
IMHO, the movie woul be too dangerous to watch by the teenagers: it contains lots of unpleasant scenes of murdering people, native Americans' slottering, violence, rape and scenes of fighting that would make a even a very strong stomach to turn inside out. There is too much blood and cruelty;there are dead and killed animals, butchering of men by other men which even adults can find quite disturbing. Some of the scenes were impossible to watch so intence they were - you could only watch then with your eyes being shut completely. There is no mercy and no polite outcomes from any fights in this film: there are pices on meat and sharp knives and axes everywhere.
The nature and landscapes shown are sensational - Rocky Mountains in winter but it takes time to uderstand what is going on: what year is it, who is fighting with whom and why French are killing English. You should read a bit of a history and what was going on in this region of America in the 19th century before going to the movie.
What else to add? Sensational movie filmed in the most unplesant weather conditions is base don a true (hard to believe story) story:
" Based on the real life cross country trek of Hugh Glass when he was mauled by a grizzly bear, left for dead, and crawled 200 miles back to civilization in 1823. He vowed vengeance on those who took his supplies and left him, spending the next several years hunting them down."

How does one define herself? It's a movie that tells you a love story but is not a love story that involves another person it is the journey of searching for your own self, your own identity, your place in the community of people who might not understand you emotionally, might not accept your sexuality and yet you know that inexplicably you belong to them. What if you are a lesbian, Lebanese and an Australian? What if you burnt bridges everywhere you go in order to live fast life? The answers to these questions and much more you will find in this Australian movie which will touch the familiar chords in your heart, search for culture and identity in the beautifully filmed Australian landscape with the great performances from Australian actors the movie manages to be fun and real at the same time.

LAST CAB TO DARWIN ON DVD NEW

review by Marina Breytman

Michael Caton, a well known Australian actor, who made us laugh so many times before, especially in " The Castle" and "the Dish", looks and acts the part of a cancer- stricken cab driver searching for a way out in Darwin, nearly 2000 kilometres away from Broken Hill, his hometown. The wonderful background of Australian outback, the array of good actors, provide a really thought provoking and positive view of the aspects of life we tend not to discuss. This movie will make you laugh and cry, it will open your mind to the social issues and raise such important questions as euthanasia. The real depth on black and white prejudices in country Australia, social problems, the dry humour and spectacular scenery will make you think and remember this movie for a time to come. One of the best movies, not perfect but significant, the movie that we must see for it is enjoyable and superbly played by most of the cast.

YOUTH NEW

review by Marina Breytman

Youth is a movie, that will touch your mind and soul.
It is reflective and full of energy and vitality at the same time. Joyful and sad - a piece of a multilayered delight of cinematography. It is like a cake that you are going to taste, made from the different fillings some sweet some bitter chocolate, ktasting it one by one you are delighted.
Two cinema greats Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel are spending time on one of the most beautiful places on Earth -Swiss Alps. The ancient mountains covered with snow like the grey hair covering the heads of main characters full of life experiences and hard earned wisdom. It is a universal story of how to deal with passing of our life and it's challenges of changing circumstances. The story told with the tenderness, sorrow and serenity. Not much really happens but you are absorbed in the lives and dialogue of the main characters. The desire to remain alive, the longing  to recapture the youth, the times of strength and success, is familiar to us all.
This film tells you that the most significant experiences can also come later in life, it shows you the melancholy of the time as it passes but leaves you with the sense of hope and joy, the restless energy that is not at all lost if you are a creative person with aspirations. There are certain darkness that makes it all divinely real. Enjoyable experience.

I truly believe some movies that discredit US CIA and government departments should be prohibited to be screened publicly even if they are targeting teenage viewers or people who like messy plots, poor acting, guns, unnatural car exploisions, bad guys, drones, robots, viruses, kids who shoot better than the agents, unbelievable story lines and other unbearable nonsense. Guys please forgive me but I can not follow the aim with what such movies are created: their heroes are fake and they promote the bad taste in cinematography. I also trust the money they spend on creating such films would be better spent on creating real viruses that will kill people who create such movies. Dear teenagers please watch the movies about prices and princesses... even the latest star wars is better than this )and thought it was bad)!.. I still give the movie 4/5 as it would be humiliating to give less - the good actors actually played there.

TWO HANDS. Two Hands is an Australian movie with a tremendous cast of actors. The lead role was taken on by Heath Ledger who did an exceptional job of acting in this comedy/action drama movie. Set in Sydney Gangland style Heath's character Jimmy finds himself in hot water. Brian Brown acts as a mob boss. Great in character with his sidekicks they are a comedic bunch. Jimmy needs to pay the mob back money and robs the bank to do so which doesn't go according to the original plan. Made in 1999 it is still a exciting action movie, with some twists that make it interesting and gripping viewing. Enjoyed the movie with winning performances I found it to be engaging, clever, and amusing . I give it 8 1/2 out of 10..

Bohemian Rhapsody Cub is grateful to Icon Films for the opportunity to review these DVDs

Thank you for the opportunity to review The Motorcycle Diaries. I must admit that I was not looking forward to reviewing this movie. I had started to watch it many years ago and was bored in the first 10 minutes and never gave it a second thought. Before I continue, let me make this very clear, it was my loss to not persevere and make an effort to watch this wonderful adventure.

Based on the early life of Ernesto “Che” Guevara, who was an Argentine Marxist, revolutionary, physician, author, guerrilla leader, diplomat and military theorist. He was also a major figure in the Cuban Revolution, with a vision to unite the whole of South America and escape the deprivation clutches of the USA.

Based on a true life story, this is an epic tale that is inspiring to all those who watch it. An adventure that traces the youthful origins of Che and his close friend Alberto Granado as they take a road trip on the back of a beat-up motorcycle across Latin America. This is a life changing movie for not only Che and Alberto, but also a wondrous journey for anyone who watches it.

Stunning cinema photography, thought provoking; a journey into lives of people struggling against oppression. An eye opener of people lives experiencing being taken from their lands, begging for food and demoralised by the big corporations.

Make sure to put this your “must see” list, and soon.

JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2015: KAKEKOMI NEW
website
RATE: 6.5/10

If it is a drama there is no one at all. Women are still mistreated everywhere - silently. If it is a comedy I only found two placed to smile but you can not call it a comedy because of those two giggles. The actors? Not the ones I would fall in love with: neither girls nor men. Some movie parts I found a bit unneeded to show, some are well made.  It is fun to watch from a history point of view though: the costumes are awesome and the surroundings of the era is very realistic. It is a tragic story after all: women trying to escape their humiliating lives with the husbands who beat them up and abuse them. They are kept in the temple for two years serving the state or the temple itself and after these years of ascetic life the divorce is granted to them and they are free to go. There is a romantic story of the  runaway girl, who falls in love with the temple doctor / writer. But after her two years her violent husband swears he has changed and asks her to come back to him to work at his shop. Would this be an offer she accepts and forgives him or will she get re-married to her new but penny-less love?
To add to  the above said I believe the film will be attractive to the Asian audience due to culture related references and traditions, unique humor, samurai warriors and the characters.

RATE: 10/10

The winter-spring is the second part of the movie called LITTLE FOREST: SUMMER & AUTUMN (2014). the movie is delicate and highly artistic. If you love Japanese water colors paintings you will fall in love with the meditative mood of this film too.

The movie shows the simple life of Ichiko , a young girl in a country town where she lives basically from what nature delivers to her. The technology is present though in a shape of a microwave, but there is no iPhones and no TV, just a nice background music of the movie and the beautiful nature landscapes.

I am pretty sure those of you who like commercial movies will not understand it, but as one of my friends said: "на вкус и цвет товарищей нет"... or "自分の好みに合わせてすべての人"

Note that we publish this movie review with a long delay of four weeks - the time I tried to chase a person who stole the DVD given to us by the Japan Foundation Sydney for review. It took me a while to find the full version of the movie and watch it today for our readers' attention - finally. Sometime the only hope you have is that the high end art makes people better... but probably that was not the case.

He thinks it is a good American chewing gum with unbelievable adventures that already taste sour.
I think the movie was excellent and served its purpose of entertaining. I was glued to my cinema chair for entire 2 hours and 20 minutes worried about Mr Bond, Yes, it is a good old chewing gum, but it was wrapped beautifully with many new, quite impressive and unpredicted , with high quality special effects and a spectacular and glamorous outfits and super fast cars changes. The bad character of course had to be of Middle Eastern look rough bearded block, the savior should always be a tiny little creature - a mouse and the girls galore should never stop with gorgeous brunette of Monica Bellucci but innocent blonde with a nice European accent. Mr James Bond has 100 thousands lives a mind of a n Apple iPhone 6sPlus with no re- charger and the look many women consider appropriate for a midnight romantic dinner. I liked this particular episode as make me trust again in a good and ever winning James and I totally enjoyed the American papier mâché heros - very well done!. Please note that this is not a must see movie but if you need to put a fat tick on your James Bond books and movies list this is obviously the one. Here is my review for Z for Zachariah.

This movie lacked momentum for me. I found myself wondering just when some action would take place only to be disappointed time and time again.

Post wipeout of civilisation (for reasons unknown), with only a “pocket of Eden” left. One woman and two men find themselves as the only survivors. Many religious references are made throughout the movie; one being a shot on an A-Z book of religious names, of course starting with A for Adam. The two men then find themselves in a Cain and Abel situation. Only one lives to win over the love of the woman, Anne.

Rather lack lustre acting. Anne is played by Australian Margot Robbie, and at times she seems to switch from Australian to American Southern.

A rather abrupt ending, which I was glad came rather quick.

GOOD KILL NEW
website
RATE: 8/10

My expectations were pretty low when I started watching this film: I do not like movies about army guns and military people. The more I watched the more I got engaged into characters and a complex psychological drama that opened in front of me. The main character is a good family man with two beautiful kids and a gorgeous wife who is fulfilling the secret military tasks at the closed army unit located in Nevada near Las Vegas. He has a well paid job and he has everything an average man can dream of. There is one little disturbing thing: his tasks involve killing terrorists using a drone pilot. From his little air conditioned military cubical in Nevada he and his team workers can observe, chase and snap without any extra efforts any target in Yemen, Afghanistan or Israel. The technology is so good being thousands of kilometers away from his aim he can even see their facial expressions forget about what the people he is to kill carry in their arms and what they drive: everything is seen so clearly as if is next door. The movie is based on real events and it is very much believable. The actors are very good and you can observe the feelings the major, our main character experience while he performs his tasks that usually take some seconds. Everything seems so in place as they all believe that the war is fair and that they simply assist their country in the war against terrorism. It is all good until the ethical part of each "engagement"  is questioned by the team members. Not only terrorists but innocent civilians get hurt... and this is when the can of worm opens up and everything is ready to get destroyed in one man's life: his carrier, his quiet and happy family like and his psyche...

TRUE DETECTIVE TV SHOW (S2, EPISODES 1-3) NEW

RATE: 6/10

I am bot a great lover of detectives stories, crimes investigations, guns, murderers, blood and naked women. But the good story is always a good story. I did not find any spice in this particular TV show: the plot is developing way too slow: there are lots of unneeded scenes shown to make it longer. It is cruel. I am against violence in films. Police shown is not perfect, they use drugs and alcohol, they get involved into crimes.... There are no saints. he art should be creative, I did not find a spark of creativity nor anything new that I did not know before in these three episodes. At some points one can get excited though and taken by feelings but only by a fraction of a minutes - the rest f the story is cols as a blood in a dead person. Sorry, perhaps detectives is not my thing...

DEATH OF A GENTLEMAN NEW
website
RATE: 5.10

We do not know about cricket that much to judge the political situation in this sport administration. The only comment to add would be: when any public entertainment becomes a business the artistic and creative part of it definitely becomes missing when the money prevail. When the entertainment or sport becomes a billion dollars business with huge profits, the business that fools around the audiences with sparkling tasteless shows, the business with false icons and idols, that leads not to soul fulfillment but to rather fake goals, merchandise sell-outs and empty and blind mass-media values it turns into a criminal affair. The more people get engaged in it (the more fans this or that entertainment gets) the more it becomes corrupt. It is like a successful government of the rich state that does not see the country true spiritual growth but sees only the multi-million dollar banknotes in stacks on its office desks. When any institution turns into such "organisation" greedy mafia hands would not wait to appear there too in what ever form be it legal or underground control of a visible power. Again, we can not judge as we are not part of the game, we are not professional in cricket as only professionals would judge. All I can say is that I could observe a very sad picture of the organisation that rules the big and beautiful sport falling apart in that documentary. It is always sad to observe a sickness in any organism.

THE GIFT NEW

The  Gift.

“Just Because you’re Done With The Past Doesn't Mean The Past Is Done With You.”
Simon & Robyn after moving house are approached by a man claiming to know Simon from high school.

Simon doesn’t recognize the man until he identifies himself as Gordon , Gordo as he was known at school.
Gordo begins dropping Gifts at the couple’s home and random visits from Gordo follow.

As Robyn seeks out the truth behind Simon & Gordo`s relationship, a horrible secret is revealed about their past.
Robin soon realizes she knows nothing about the kind of man Simon really is.

The Gift is a refreshingly brilliant take on the on the Horror/Suspense/thriller genre.
With plenty of Jump Scares and a twist in the plot that will leave audiences speechless, The Gift is a must see.

This is a brief review – I don’t want to give away to much of the film, as not knowing is what gives the film its appeal – right through to the closing credits.
For anyone who has ever been bullied - or been the bully at school,
this is a movie that will leave you wondering – I hope I didn’t upset any one in my past.

And as the movies tag line says “Just Because you’re Done With The Past Doesn't Mean The Past Is Done With You.”

MISS POTTER NEW

review by Julie Dargan

Miss Potter is a delightful movie following the life of the famous children’s novelist. Renee Zellweger plays Beatrix Potter splendidly: along with the supporting cast this is a movie that flowed rather like a Peter Rabbit novel.

The storyline of Beatrice Potter is one that many people were not aware of. My admiration for this wonderful women is ever so stronger now that I watched the hurdles she had to go through in order to be accepted for her true purpose in life; that being bringing animals to life in characters such as Peter Rabbit, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin.

Finding true love and losing it must have been difficult, but Beatrice took it all in her stride and managed to achieve so much. A wonderful woman, who donated most of her earnings to the protection of the Lake District in the UK.

An enchanting movie, one for the whole family to enjoy once the hype of Christmas settles down.

My score 8/10

THE TREE OF LIFE
review by Bryanna Reynolds
website

The Tree of Life is a film for people wanting to watch something aesthetically pleasing to the eye as well as emotionally attaching you to an interesting story. The film stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain in a film dealing with philosophical thoughts and escapism through cinematic soundtracks and cosmic nature landscapes.

Within the first five minutes it is obvious there was a lot of love put into making this film so beautiful. I attribute this to the legendary director and writer of the film Terrence Malick.

Aesthetically the film makes the smallest of elements of nature such as water and mother earth appear to be a character in the film engaging every one of your senses. It was amazing to see a simple time lapse of water rolling and waves mesmerising you into a sense of calm and appropriate scenarios within the films stages.

The soundtrack was absolutely beautiful, like one was being transported through time and space to another life. I think the orchestra like and choir voice accompaniment throughout the film adjusted appropriately to the era the characters were living. I would happily listen to the soundtrack over and over. I think this is a sign that the music has worked accordingly, when one can simply listen to the music and remember a single moment.

Before watching the film I didn’t know much about Terrence Malick, I must say after watching the film I couldn’t wait to find out everything about him. This visionary film made me want to escape into his art and this was something I had felt before when watching other great directors from the past.

For anyone wondering what type of film to expect when watching it, word of advice would be to just roll with it and explore the film as you would a piece of art. It isn’t your average film and it doesn’t stick to a linear narrative. The truth is the differences in this film are what set it apart from everything else.

I would recommend this film to anyone who loves watching a film that challenges your own personal thoughts and philosophy on life matters, love and death; it really deals with a lot of emotion. This film is definitely for an older crowd and I feel like people would be easily able to connect with the family relationships in the film.

STAR WARS EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS

RATE: 5.10

For those of us grown up with the original Star Wars movies, followed many years later by its prequels, and now Episode VII - Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I'm saying it honestly being an opinion of Alex and myself: it is hard to full us withe the good old characters, amazing computer graphics and the weak plot (or should I say, the copy of the ideas that you have seen already, nothing new - just a good but tasteless chewing gum).
You and your kids though will love to see all your old adorable heroes but I believe even Harrison Ford probably said: "This time guys please make sure you kill me as I can not take these same lines anymore..."  Written - badly, characters shaped - poorly! All the situations, all the locations - ticked and seen before... nothing original, all borrowed just shamelessly - such a downfall for the great movie ever created by the Lukas genius and look at it now... eh...
Should I say: it is action-packed right from the title sequence; and you will find a good time during the movie if you do not want to think at all. The movie is nostalgic but for us it is a like to say: "They tricked us again by false believes that it will be something extraordinary and new ideas-wise" so sad...  Ar one point I started thinking: are he makers are so desperate for money that they did not even re-think what they were filming ?.. They might be relying on their loyal fans who would swallow everything they are shown...
May the force be with you while you wait for the official opening...

Becoming Jane was a slight disappointment for me. I usually love Anne Hathaway but direction was sorely missing in the first half of this movie. Storyline was slow yet difficult to follow..

The second half of the movie gained momentum and started to draw me in. A great insight to the person behind the pen. The great Jane Austen.

My score 5/10.

VACATION

RATE: 5/10

It is certainly a very entertaining movie for the teenagers and the adults who do not judge the movies very highly, who love below the belt jokes, young people swearing in front of their parents, "closet" humor, cheap, not funny and already used jokes and much more fall downs. It is sad to see as I remember the original version of the movie with European vacation an it was very funny and good. I also tend to not pay my respect to the good actors who utilise and downgrade themselves in such movies. Sad, but true...

JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2015: BAKUMAN

Bakuman
Friendship, struggle, triumph!
High school buddies Moritaka (Takeru Sato) and Akito (Ryunosuke Kamiki) have few ambitions when it comes to the life-path trodden to dust by countless graduates before them – college, a job that calls for a tie, a corporate ladder that reluctantly rewards effort with an annual raise, the trudge of days barely punctuated mediocre successes …

No, these two young lads look to the skies whence fame, fortune and romance beckon to them. Seduced by the promise of having their manga published in Shonen Jump, they team up to create the next smash hit manga series. The rapport is instant – Satoh and Kamiki are the perfect partners in crime. One writes, the other draws. Together they take on their rivals one by one – driven by the motto Friendship, Struggle, Triumph!

Bakuman is a film visually faithful to the medium that inspires it – rich with gesture, beautifully framed shots and charmingly exaggerated characters. It is inventive, aesthetically ambitious, at times playfully cheesy. It is a delight to watch, and possibly one of the most thoughtfully shot films I’ve seen in a long time. It is little surprise that the film was number one at the Japanese box office on its opening weekend.

Bakuman opens the 2015 Japanese Film Festival, showing in Melbourne at ACMI and Hoyts Melbourne Central - 26 November – 6 December

THE PROGRAM

RATE:7/10

Our opinions were divided on this movie although we agreed on the major thoughts that the movie reflects on. Alex gave it lower than 7 while I thought it deserved much higher mark.

The movie touches the very basic human negative feeling: greed and shows how greed can push you down from the top of the mountain that has been climbed so hardly. Alex did not like the overall feelings he experienced while watching the movie that is why he lowed the rate. I found the movie to be a good learning experience for many who think they do not have enough, for those who love hatred, jealousy and greed and how these feelings can lead you to a self destruction not only as a physical being  but also as spiritual being. We talk not only about one human individual but about the companies that surround a super hero and support the greed.

Imagine you won three sport world records in a row - year after year. You are the best! Would it be enough for you to create another record in history and retire? No, seven years! Seven years is a presidence already - the record that is unique for any sport and was for Tour De France! Lance Armstrong was our family raw model for everything: when my husband got cancer he was looking up at him saying: "I can do it if he can..." Lance gave people hope to look forward to in life... and suddenly the shade replaced the sun. His figure was very convincing for many observers but obviously not for the experts.

Human capacity in sport has reached its peak. We all know that there are certain capabilities of human body no one can go beyond. The world records are all set. We can only observe that there are some better records and sometimes (as my professional friend in sport said: "the countries start to compete in drugs they can still not detect..." As soon as you are not caught you appear clean - only some suspicious records that show 20% better results than last year can show the experts that something is going on... All the countries cheat and use drugs for their sportsmen but the one who is caught got the blame for the whole team.

Lance was disqualified for life sue to some unforeseen circumstances: first his friend and team member was caught.using performance enhancing drugs, then his ex-wife told on him, then his doctor was convinced and then the whole can of worms got opened up to the public.

Did not we all got disappointed, we who always want more from the sports people : better records, better performance and entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. We are part of this what is given to us: we are part of the greed based world.

It is very hard to observe the deteriorating and degenerating of the human being and how Lance turned from an innocent looking and cycling devoted sportsman to a  snake-looking bulling the other sportsmen animal with a greed in his eyes (BTW, the actor's, Ben Foster' performance is amazing!!!) and an urge for more money and fame. He can not stop anymore: the drugs that helped him to reach the tops of the tops finally started to take their expensive toll: they had to get back what they gave him - his drug damaged brain turned him from a modest hero into a materialistic mafia-like-behaving monster who forgot what his life purpose is. He pretended to be something he never was before... He was a bad actor obviously.

His dramatic failure took down many around him who fed on money and fame hunger too. How shameful... How shameful and how good that we all know about it now and can learn what not to do in life: some of us have to tell to themselves that enough is enough... Good lesson!

Now... Why the program? The program is a special procedure the sportsmen go onto to achieve special results. They invest money into it and get the stunning results. Should we all be aware of what programs we have installed in our minds?.. It is never late to change them and start living afresh.

review by Irina Kazhavets

I wold absolutely recommend this movie for a nice Friday family watch, easy going with lots of action, love, adventure and make sure you have enough tissues with you!!!

Even my husband, the toughest man I know said:  wow, what a great movie! It’s all about an absolutely amazing, Faithful German shepherd, who was serving in a war in Afghanistan, friendship and love.  After a very unfortunate and unpleasant  situation in that family life, Max was brought to that household, with an amazing young boy, Justin, who is just like me and you and like any normal teenager: ambitions and full of life, not even realising how his life is going to change after Max starts leaving with them. It's also filled with great love in the family, relationships are the key, respect! From the beginning, I thought it’s all about the war, but keep watching…, a lot of sense in that movie! Some of the actions are absolutely breathtaking!

Sometimes in a life, there are certain things which meant to happen to change yourself and the way you live this life.

JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2015: MISS HOKUSAI

RATE: 7/10

Here is my review for Miss Hokusai
Set in old Tokyo (then called Edo) in 1814, this is the story of a daughter of Tetsuzo, arguably Japan’s most famous artist from the late Edo period.
Third of Tetsuzo's four daughters and born out of his second marriage, outspoken 23-year-old O-Ei has inherited her father's talent and stubbornness, and very often she would paint instead of him, though non credited for this. Her art is so powerful that sometimes leads to trouble. "We're father and daughter; with two brushes and four chopsticks, we'll get by anywhere."
However, very few today are even aware of the woman who assisted him all her life, and greatly contributed to his art. This is the untold story of O-Ei, Master Hokusai's daughter: a lively portrayal of a free-spirited woman overshadowed by her larger-than-life father, unfolding through the changing seasons.
At first I was dismayed that this was an animated movie, but once I realised the artworks involved, the strokes of this master and his daughter were appreciated more with this type of screening.
A engaging, lively movie, intermixed with humour and real life struggles.
 My score 7/10.

THE IRON LADY

RATE: 10/10
review by Julie Dargan.

The Iron Lady:
This is a warts and all timepiece showcasing an elderly Margaret Thatcher in the opening scenes.
In Britain, it had been an open secret that former prime minister Margaret Thatcher has been sliding into dementia. “Open” because old friends and political allies can all see the changes in the proud woman known as the Iron Lady, particularly since she suffered a series of mini-strokes in 2002 and withdrew from public speaking on her doctors’ advice. And “secret” because no one had spoken publicly about it.
As the scene moves from Ms Thatcher talking to the imagined presence of her recently deceased husband as she struggles to come to terms with his death while scenes from her past life, from girlhood to British prime minister, intervene.
I did not know much about this woman but after watching The Iron Lady, I had a greater understanding of her rise to Prime Minister as well as the challenge she faced in this important position.
The decisions she made shaped Great Britain to the powerhouse that it is today. Without her determination and thought it may be a very different place to what it is today.
Brilliantly portrayed by the wonderful Meryl Streep, this is a must see.
 My score 10/10.

THE GALLOWS

The Gallows

Set in Nebraska in 1993, the high school kid Charlie Crimille dies on stage  in a freak accident, during a school play. Twenty years later the school decides to stage a tribute performance of the same play, called Gallows, despite some rumours that Charlie's ghost still haunts the school.

The rest of the plot is familiar. The group of kids get themselves into trouble in the locked school. Loud noises, dark chilling corridors, doors opening and closing on their own..
Trying to create an atmosphere of horror and fear the tactics are borrowed from many similar movies. The acting is not mature enough to make it more interesting. An attempt to scare seems a bit melodramatic. Probably not a bad movie for the teenage audiences who were not yet exposed to the well made horror movies that linger in your memory even after you visited the cinema..

BRAND: A SECOND COMING

review by Marina Breytman

A Second Coming

Meeting Russell Brand in A Second Coming is a bit hectic, to say the least.
Never too shy about his own persona, we have seen him as a comedian, on stage, giving the interviews, in theatre and on TV, we can say that he is arrogant and self depreciating
at the same time.  This man has something to say, at least he cares.

In this documentary he takes us back to his childhood in Essex, we meet his parents. This meeting gives us a glimpse into his personality. We are exposed to his life, what makes him who he is today. We hear the conversations with his friends, have a look at his past, drug taking, fame, celebrity status, marriage and his thoughts and ideas..
He is a political activist, calls himself a revolutionary, who wants to make this world a better place. Having acknowledged all of the above you cannot help thinking that he is a bit messed up still searching how to make his mark on the world. Brand confesses to have  a messiah complex and that is a big statement. At least he is honest and direct and speaks of his desire to create "spiritual revolution". His political awakening is still a project. He has been criticised for his book, but Brand's passion and sincerity in this documentary is endearing and we can be assured that we will hear what he has to say in the future..

GIRLS
TV SHOW SEASON 4 ON DVD (ROADSHOW ENTERTAINMENT)

review by Bryanna Reynolds

GIRLS Season 4

Being a massive fan of Lena Dunham’s (Actress, Creator & Writer) previous work I knew that season 4 of the hit TV series GIRLS was simply going to be amazing.

Like any person in their mid 20’s the title character Hannah played by the talented (Lena Dunham) is completely relatable in the way she is trying to shift between the worlds of being a young adult and a grown up who has to learn to look after herself.

Season 4 as a whole compared to the first three series I think is more about Hannah searching to fulfil her career goals as well as hopes and aspirations for becoming a successful author and writer.

It was beautiful to learn of the life lessons that a young person is going through and how it is something we will all go through. It is the quest for reaching for the stars and trying to do the thing you want most in life more than anything else.

The season also teaches us that we need to make sacrifices in order to follow our dreams, which severely affects Hannah’s personal relationships in the series. Hannah moves from New York City to Iowa in order to do a writing course. What I love the most about this was that the audience see a different side to Hannah and this proves that not all decisions we make are the right one. At the same time though the series teaches us that in our hearts we know what it is that we want and there may be other ways to fulfil our dreams and destiny.

Once again the series has one of the best soundtracks in it. I think it is really important for a series to have music that relates to the intended audience that they wish to watch the series and this was apparent with the choice in music throughout the series.

Lena Dunham as a writer is absolutely gifted and if you haven’t watched GIRLS yet, now is the time, especially if you are in your 20’s. The series speaks to young women directly and talks about issues that are relatable. I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next.

I would recommend this series for any young women from 18 upwards to their early 30’s as they talk about a wide range of topics and issues related to growing up and transitioning between young adult and grown up gradually taking on more and more responsibilities.

LAST CAB TO DARWIN

Last Cab to Darwin

What a journey based on the true story of a man named Rex who has been given devastating news of his terminal cancer!

The story line of this movie is simple: a single lonely man who has never left his home town, makes a decision to travel alone in his taxi all the way to Darwin, to get euthanasia injection.

The story unveils  of a true spirit of the main character neighbour and his mates. Speaking publicly on the radio with the doctor he confesses to his death sentence and of his plans of travelling down to Darwin to go ahead with this procedure.

Living his home and his dog behind to his long term neighbour, he begins his journey. On the way he meets a young aboriginal fellow who has not yet discovered himself yet due to lack of guidance and an alcohol abuse. The two fellows make a strong bond based seemingly on no ground. The main hero guides the lost young man to reach for his goal to be the best soccer player and play for his town.

During his stay in one of the little towns our taxi driver also meets a lovely young English nurse who sees the need to accompany Rex to Darwin and to look after him.

This is a very powerful story about, life, death, friendship, bonding a discovery of his true friends. Admitting to his long and secretive love for his across the road neighbour before that seems to be to his last day, She tells him that she loves him back.  Without much to loose he makes his journey back to his home town just in time to die in  his loved ones hands.

This story makes you realise how life and its every second is precious, the fact  that we should not withold our feelings, and that we all have a purpose in life, we all have purpose in that wonderful journey.

It is quite often that a stranger can change someone's life for better. Sensational movie - thank you!

SELF/LESS
on DVD/blue-ray and digital by Roadshow Home Entertainment
review by Camilla and Glen Wilson

Selfless

What if human consciousness existed outside the body?
What if we could shed our old body and live on in a new one time and time again.
Selfless is a story of business tycoon Damian Hale, dying of cancer who is informed about a radical new treatment called ‘shedding” where his consciousness is transformed into a new body – a new body grown in a lab.
As Damien adapts to his new body, the movie takes on a strange twist with flashbacks to a life Damien has never lived.
As the plot unfolds Damien meets Madeline, who recognizes him as her late husband Mark – Mark apparently has sold his body to science to pay for their daughter’s treatment for a life threatening illness.
Selfless is a fast paced movie with plenty of action, a fair amount of violence and coarse language. Not a movie I would recommend to younger audiences.
The film is a little slow to get off the ground but worth a watch – I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The movie concludes with Damian`s toughest decision – eternal life or give back a life that was never his….

Here is my review of the wonderful movie, Midnight Diner.
This movie centres around a diner that opens from midnight to morning in a back alley of a shopping district is the main focus of this movie.

People come and go and “master” (the proprietor) watches all and interacts with everyone with dignity. From transvestites to lost souls, you never know who will be popping in. This is the type of place I would love to visit. As the modern world moves towards hiding behind closed doors, it is wonderful to see “master” create a haven for people to gather and share their triumphs as well as their lows.

I was also enchanted to watching life in Japan. I was intrigued with the foods being prepared, such as gingko nuts and yam. Despite the characters saying respect is being lost in Japan, the reverence and respect the characters had for each other truly highlights the humility of the Japanese in this wonderful movie.

My score 9/10

LOVE THE COOPERS

RATE: 6 from me and 10 from Alex makes it 8/10

As you see our opinions got divided on this movie. I found it a bit too simple and "Americanized", typical ending with happy dancing, typical unhappy moments that come to a happy ending and small family issues where each member in fact loves each other.  The story is way too banal and too X-massy for me.
On the contrary Alex valued the film quite high: two reasons - he laughed a lot at the screening which does not happen usually and also he said: I would love to watch it again which is even more outrageous for him.
Alex's thoughts:
- good jokes, stories and expressions; I found lots of similarities with Seinfeld humor
- excellent music selection (soundtrack)
- it is not your banal family X-massy movie
- the dogs are amazing!

That will be the first thing you pay attention to when watching this movie: humor; it is light, unusual, delicate and tender/ It is so specific you can not compare it with any possible humor you experienced before. I loved it , so did Alex. The humor is adorable in this film!
Should I mention the actors? They are ALL amazingly talented, graceful to the extend that you surely believe they play themselves, no one else... but themselves.
The episodes are all beautifully shaped: the scenery, the set ups, the angles of the camera etc. They again, like the snap shots of some one's real life events. I adored it, Alex loved it too.. The references to the main characters childhood are also very appropriate and very well done. The story lines of many characters are combined and logical - they end up in one place under one roof - well, sort of...
The main characters all have their self discovery points so to speak, self realisation or should I say self-re-identification moments, self-re-thinking turn around places - this is shown in the film with a master-craft of a talented director.
Did I say the actors are fantastic? Yes, they are.... I want to see more of that series!

MURDER IN THE FIRST

review by Julie Dargan

Murder in the First is an American Series now in its third season. I have been the chance to review Series One first screened in 2015. Before I began viewing the DVD, I thought this was going to be another fast moving, action packed show but was surprisingly mistaken.
This series takes a slower pace than other shows. At first I thought too slow, but after 10 minutes watching I realised that this is a program that should not be rushed.
After the first episode I was hooked. The pace allows you to get to know the characters and understand what drives them. There are twists in the storyline that keeps you entertained and wanting more at the end of each episode. It is an easy storyline to follow, which is often not the case in the fast paced shows that are dominating our TV sets at the moment.
Acting in some parts could be improved upon but on the whole I enjoyed Series One and look forward to the release of the ones to follow.

BBC FIRST BRITISH FILM FESTIVAL 2015: THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY  NOMINATED THE BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH
website
RATE: 9/10

It was a really unusual role for Dev Patel who played a complicated character of an Indian mathematician-genius who arrives to England to publish his paper and to conquer the world of science by his knowledge and intuitive approach to maths. Dev plays magnificently amazing (as usual). His part reminded us of "code cracking" with Benedict Cumberbatch in its complexity and we found lots of similarities in both "misunderstood" fine minds. Nationalism in "Infinity" sounds very loud while showing snobbish and almost isolated society of British elite scientists and mathematicians who can not accept any other blood or skin color in their royal societies. The theme of "anti-multi-culture-ism" is pronounced and discussed but looks multicultural word is an imaginary picture even now. Nationalism is everywhere: they did this they did that. Nationality is mentioning everywhere and with and without a reason. When in the news you will not hear "Russian did this.." or "Americans discussed that..." or "in India and Korea they..." then you will know we live in the multicultural world when nobody cares about where you come from but rather care who you are.  Till the reference is mentioned and stressed in ANY way - remember you live in nation-labeled world.
The episode with the soldiers beating the Indian scientist for his being of a darker skin color says it all. This is s shocking episode. We see when one nation is in war and it is angry at another nation innocent people can take this anger of themselves and can be beaten with no reason: we always forget that ordinary people are not responsible for wars: governments are responsible. When anger is projected on ordinary people who are not related to war nor they are responsible for the whole national leader's mistakes and misdeeds - it looks revolting. People. let's think about whom we are killing (our brothers) and what for (for the prosperity of the some governors that take away everything from us - even our lives).
We should admit one weak point in the movie that perhaps should not been shown at all or if shown than with the same level of great actors as English shores part - I am talking about "Indian" part of the movie with very weak actors and perhaps some unneeded scenes that did not impress much. The "Indian" part can not even be compared with the "English" part of the film.
The movie is brilliant and worth seeing for many reasons apart of two major actors stunning performance: Dev and Jeremy Irons.
