NATIONAL THEATER LIVE: THE THREEPENNY OPERA NEW website RATE: 7/10
I heard this opera for hundreds of times since my very early childhood. The main theme of the music is so recognisable it became a musical postcard of German entertainment. Bertolt Brecht and his masterpiece were haunting me for years and I really was looking forward to listening to this particular production of the famous sensation of the last century. I found lots of genius solutions in staging , in acting and in interpreting the german post war gem. Some parts were very with and very smart too. The voices of the singers were absolutely amazing. But for some reason in the middle of the performance I realised I did not care much about the underworld and it's cheap busy days. For some reason I (and Alex) got completely disengaged from the story line, More to that some parts of the opera started to seem falling down or done way too plain to our liking. We could not figure out if it was the "thing" of this particular production or the opera itself/ As you all remember the history it was created in order to attract the crowds to watch the high art like they watch the football matches. That was one of the reasons I believe as the music was at parts seemingly primitive and the production followed. I can certainly see that the genius music can be based on even describing the low-life - there is no doubt about that. As we gave 10 / 10 for the best parts of the opera and 5 //10 for the plain parts the total mark turned to stay 7/10. Let's say it is 50:50 o our liking and it might be different for yours.
I loved this film for its sincerity, for organic natural colors, for true feelings showed, for the ability of a man to stand for his values and for his dignity, for his truth in front of the danger; for many beautiful and very pure faces filmed. I loved this film for its story truth and I was shocked that this was an actually true story indeed; t is still continues as it is seen from the final titles. I loved the actors' performance: all so open and so deep and touching. I did not like of course that film got political in many episodes but guess it was unavoidable. I also think the time was depicted very honestly. I could not help myself to admire this sport that is so elegant, so romantic, so musketeer and so ancient. There is also a historical value in this picture of course portraying the times of difficulty of many nations under the cruel ruler. Just one beautiful and very romantic film for you to watch! Highly recommended!
When you hear the title The Accountant you perhaps realise that the film is not about the accounting or perhaps it is only partially about the accounting but the rest should be extremely entertaining.... well, and you will e absolutely right. Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a genius when it comes to accounting; he is the best of the crop; he is autistic. He had a very tough childhood, he spent some years in jail and after he got out he started working for large companies inventing the tricks for them to avoid high taxes. He earned a fortune too but lived a humble life... well till he got focused on one particular case following 15 years of papers at one IT company where one of the two partners got suspicious about the illegal actions of the other partner. As Chris was a step close to the resolving the case of 62 million dollars disappearing from the company the things suddenly got very unpredictable for all the parties. The autistic person is played to perfection; all the other characters ate very convincing too and played very well. Although I caught myself on comparing this film with War Dogs and it lost in intensity and audience engagement but only few points though. This film is not only very entertaining to watch but it is also very intelligently done: it is witty and unpredictable - you will have fun no matter if you like or dislike action thrillers.
Every tribe has a history. Every tribe has rises and downs and the tribe of Varosha is facing the end of the world they live in. Set up at night, the sci- fi movie "Pandorica" has a very simple plot- leadership. Three youngsters, chosen by the tribe, are brought to the mystical forest in order to embark on, undoubtedly, a dangerous adventure to prove to be worthy to become a new leader. What challenges would they face? Would they stay together or fall against each other? Earning the status of a leader brings an unexpected turn for everyone involved. The various music with its dramatic notes add to the harsh decision making of the protagonists. The director Tom Paton investigates the dynamic of a group situation and makes it fascinating experience of a low budget movie.
The film Krampus is an excellent depiction of a horror film fanatics worst holiday nightmare or reality depending on how you look at it.
Being someone who is obssesed with all kinds of horror/suspense films I was so exited to see this film. I am happy to tell you that it lived up to the expectation of a Christmas nightmare.
The story revolves around a Christmas holiday in which nothing goes to plan. What ends up happening though is the opposite of a christmas miracle. Instead of receiving a visit from Santa Claus there is another much wickeder creature that is summoned to a family home.
I was so impressed with the artistic style throughout the film. Special applause to the prop makers/digital artist for creating such a creature feel so real and life like. I don't think I can think of christmas in the same spirit. But don't worry, It won't put you off celebrating your christmas spirit. At least not for a while. All in all it is a fabulous movie that lets you escape to another time and place.
The film had some of my favourite actors of all time including aussie actress Toni Collette. Her performance is memorable and it is always great to see aussie talent in hollywood movies. Other notable performance's were from Adam Scott and Conchata Ferrell. This is definitely a horror film with a lot of big hollywood names involved. Generally I like watching films with unknown actors as it adds to the mystery but I think in this case it was perfection.
I would recommend this film to any horror film fanatics especially if you love films surrounding summoning spirits and creatures.
AMERICAN HONEY NEW website review by Mahsan Ahmadi
The main purpose of the movie is to illustrate the social harms while a deep love story is embedded into the story line too, to show how true love can impact on people and change their lives' direction. On the other hand,American Honey is portraying the freedom among teenagers in the US and their efforts to survive. We can observe this while the group of tourist students is traveling through different states to sell the magazines in order to earn money and mae it. The movie was unanimously acclaimed phenomenally successful.
Neon Bull film feels like sneaking after someone's life: the rodeo workers in North-East of Brazil at work. It feels a little bit like a documentary but it is not. You watch the animals being fed, cleaned, looked after, ridden, got into herds, driven from one place to another, being under all sort of preparations, resting etc etc. This work requires from people who look after horses and bulls to be fit and strong. The relationship between people change as the dynamics in the group who looks after the stock and the horses changes. One person leaves, one more joins in. There some beautiful nature shoots there are some exquisite artistic animals shoots and there are interactions between animals and people. If you want to call these people cowboys you probably can but the word does not describe it the way as we know American cowboys - it is a bit different. the movie is very good and very unusual - you might find it even strange at some moments. My recommendation is when you go to watch it: open your mind and you will enjoy it even more: the man's naked bodies, very finely shaped women, stunning horses and dusty white bulls that glow in the dark on the rodeo fields. The shooting is spectacular in some of the episodes. You literally smell the earth there as the film is so close to the land, to the humble and penny-less but very gorgeous and handsome people who live there. I have no idea actually if the film was done with real actors or it was picturing the locals -it is magnificent one way or another. As I said it felt like I was on the other planet watching some one else's lives passing by, someone's drew materialised on the screen.
IRANIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: LIFE AND A DAY NEW website RATE: 7/10
It was probably one of those moments when I after watching the movie stood up from the cinema chair and said: Kill me if I understood anything" but... if some of you will find lots of unknown in the other culture we found lots of new things that we learnt. Yes,it is strange to watch the film and realise that you do not understand half of the language lost in translation : especially the good jokes, but it is good to watch and study something that you have not experienced before. The director's work is amazing and the actors are simply superb and play so naturally. It was hard to understand the nature of some dialogues especially when the arguments between the two brothers started. Each family is cray and dis-functional in its own ways... some families have their own black sheep and there is also a smart guy, the smartest in the family too bad he is still small. The film is honest and strips out the plugs of the society: poverty with hits ugly face, cruelty to each other, love and care on the other side, bad habits and jealousy and fear. It is a superb film to watch if you would like to know more about Iranian culture and traditions.
The director of Nocturnal Animals Tom Ford wrote: "Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think there needs to be - I don't really like the word moral - a moral to the story. You need to think about it. Things can be entertaining, but if you leave the theater and it doesn't stay with you, doesn't haunt you, doesn't challenge you, then it's not successful, for me. So I hope to make films that make one think. " This film haunts me for the last two days non-stop: I thought if I tell the story to my husband I will stop thinking about it - no way! The episodes flash back one after another in my memory like the past haunting Amy Adams who plays the main character, Susan Morrow, who left her husband with the bitter words telling him that he is weak and can not support his family the way she pictures it. She regrets every word she pronounced in his face when after years of separation he sends her his manuscript,a novel called Nocturnal Animals that she having started reading can not put aside .Susan suddenly realises that she has done the biggest mistake and most unforgivable in her life. The story line is simple: it is so common nowadays that man can not perform their family duties to the liking of a woman and the women turn into ever unhappy creatures. But the movie is to its story it is so much more to the movie as we know it. You basically find yourself in the middle of three stories running in parallel:Susan current seemingly successful life as an owner, a talented artist and an art curator of a large, contemporary and most prestigious gallery in LA. The second story is the story within the story: it is the book that Susan reads that reveals page after page the thrilling seek of the revenge of a husband who lost his wife and his daughter to the criminal, brutal and cruel gang that operated on the hi-way capturing and torturing peaceful civilians. There is the third story and it is Susan's memory of her past life with her ex-husband Tony (Jake Gyllenhaal) . The three stories are plated together like the karmic knot that Susan is challenged to unseal in order to find out lots of unpleasant truths about herself. The cast is beyond any appraisal:the list of strongest actors goes on and on and you can not decide who played better among them so great everyone was. I will not forget to mention that the grotesque start of the film with the overweight naked women dancing that turns out to be an art gallery opening. It literally put me in a very strange state of mind as I was slightly turning mad. The luxury of outfits (episode with Susan'smother's jewelry statement ) are simply turning into the steals of the scenes that are so shockingly gorgeous and out of this world they are hard to forget! So is Susan's house although cold and glassed it appears as an iceberg in the middle of Susan's manuscript readings. The director takes us from the hot water and then make us stand under the icy cold shower. The rocky road of emotions during the film does not end it the cinema hall but follows you around for days after as I said before. The episode in the book read by Susan the main character is portrayed the same way as Susan husband was weak and powerless (at least this is how she saw him). he is unable to protect his wife and his daughter on the road during the rage when the unarmed ruffians take the advantage of the family very easily, The scene can not be watched without shock and surprise when the husband is unable to protect his own family. Even the revenge scene solves the conflict in the only possible way: the humble and helpless husband should die as he will be unable to go living with the sin in his soul. However the revenge will be chasing not only the bandits on the road. Susan's ex-husband Tony will also get his revenge. His revenge in reality is more cruel than his book of fiction described revenge. Two last words about he film: electrifying and sophisticated!
LEOPARD NEW review by Nadia Pleshkova
Why do some movies are called certain way? After watching "LEOPARD" I was in no position to miss the opportunity to look up the symbolism of the animal Leopard. Leopard carries the symbolic meaning of privacy and that she is secretive in all that she does, therefore making it a perfect symbol of secrets and the need to keep them. Thus the movie "LEOPARD" (2016) keeps the truth hidden till the very end. The dark thriller is the story of two brothers, damaged by their vulnerable upbringing and lack of support and hatred by the local, strongly religious, community. Reunited after a few years, their search for the mother and a resolution to their past takes an unexpected turn in their relationship with each other. The gloomy weather and a grey scenery throughout the film add to the dramatic mood and personal tragedy of the main characters but to bring some light and love towards the end. Strong acting will keep the audience mesmerized, no doubts.
If you have not seen a good Italian comedy in a while this is going to be your time. Two women from a psychiatric resort / facility take a wild thelma-and-louise ride escaping away to the freedom one day. They visit their past and faced with their ugly present can not see the future. The film would be a devastating journey int two life tragedies and if was not for a good and healthy humor it would be a very scary story to watch. We discover bit after bit what has taken place in both women's lives and how did they end up in the crazy place like that. The movie is shot in the best Federico Fellinian traditions: it is everywhere and nowhere; it is about everything and nothing and it is as surreal and real as life itself. Will this escape from reality help both women to realise what have they done and how can they take the present now? They both walk on the edge so to speak: one more move and they end up either in the strict facility hospital, in jail or on the death bed themselves. We feel fearful for them though we laugh each time something outrageous takes place. Both women live in the fantasy world of lies and stories that never took place. Will they see themselves as they are - no perfection, no beauty - just as they are now! But what most important is : will WE see both woman as normal human beings who act according to their believes and crazy circumstances they are surrounded by? We travel together with both girls on the rocky roads they built for themselves: we laugh and cry together with them as we become part of this story ourselves by picking up their ever changing moods and feelings.
If you like classical films and classical acting this movie is for you. The three leading characters are played to the best the cinematography can wish for. The story line is heartbreaking. The character are all so lovable that it is impossible to judge them by their actions as we understand why they have done this and have not done that. One lie as a chain of actions brings many lies after: one after another they grow on you as the time passes by. The lie was a natural necessity at one stage but it turns many lives upside down. the truth is even more ugly: it can destroy many lives and families. The honesty that tries to cover the lie brings more damage than anything else: it can lock people in jail, it can break hearts of many and can wipe off the trust between two people. What would you choose? The answers seem simple if you are not involved in this game: you would obviously choose honesty and truth but if the lie can heal you and your family than can it be a solution?.. and then what would you choose: your own pleasure and peace, the please of your partner or your child perhaps: what is there that is more important to you?... There is no answer to this question. There might be the Light between the Oceans, but it takes so much from us to keep it in flames, bright and pure that sometimes it is almost impossible and we choose dishonesty as we see so much of it around us... What IS the answer? The cinematography, the soundtrack and the details shot in the movie are absolutely exquisite to the extend (as I mentioned earlier) that this will be a classical film on your movie collection shelves easily.
For those of us who love a fine science-fiction movie this would be a perfect example of what we all are looking for. Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is assigned to be a mediator between the aliens and the humans. She is a linguist with extraordinary skills. She lecturers at the University when suddenly the breaking news stop her class and change the course of her days. She is a single mother raising a daughter who suddenly passes away from a terminal disease. The arrival of the other universal creatures affects people not only globally as the landing takes place in 12 locations on Earth, not even on the national level but mainly it changes the lives of the humanity individually: Louise experience this on her own mind and the changes shock her inner core: not only she gets the super-human abilities she is now able to influence the decisions taken on global levels. The film i scary and it is breathtaking in some moments. The messages Louise receives are intimate however she takes them on the universal level. The mystery of arrival will be felt inside your physical and emotional bodies but not in the negative way but more like in a shade of curiosity and expansion of your world vision and planetary perspective. If only we could understand each other on the surface of the Earth - the way Louise understood the aliens decoding their messages - we would all be happy and live without wars and suffering. Amy's character is vulnerable though strong by its believes. She seems a bit weak at the beginning but as her character develops and she reveals the messages sent to her (and to humanity) we can see her powers and what she stands for. While the film shows us how separated we all are and how we are all far away from the truth, the point is clear at the end: we are all given a gift of knowledge and we are all equal on how we treat it: we are all one at the end. The film will be an eye opening for many who respect a good science-fiction story with the memorable message.
THE BASKETBALL DIARIES NEW review by Ivan Lubkov
The Backlot studios – Basketball diaries. The exclusive private party venue The Backlot studios hosted screenings of classic movies that stand out as extraordinary jewels of the modern film industry. Access to the cinema is located within a walking distance to Melbourne Exhibition and Convention centre and has abundance of free parking in the vicinity. The films are displayed on a modern 8m by 4m silver screen with Dolby Digital 7.1 sound. The picture and audio output is state of the art and ensures full immersion in the film. The Backstreet Diaries is based on autobiography of an American musician and writer James Dennis Carroll. The picture has raised a lot of controversy at the end of 1997 when it faced a lawsuit due to a mass shooting in Columbine High school which was allegedly inspired by some of the scenes of the film. Even though the lawsuit was dismissed after 4 years the expert community agrees to substantial similarities. The film was also one of the first works of the raising start Leonardo DiCaprio playing the main role of Jim Carrol. The screening gave a harsh reminder of the horrible impact of drugs. People influenced by addiction cause distress and sadness not only to themselves but to the people around them. In certain cases the only way for addicts to break free from lifeless grip of narcotics is to go through jail and rehabilitation. Even though the picture showed a downhill journey of a young teenager going through the worst stages in life it also opened up space for hope of recovery even in the worst cases.
Artificial intellect and the challenges that human race will have to face in the future: controlling their creations - this is the major story line so to speak. Morgan is a product of many years of work in a hidden from civilisation laboratory. Did I like the film? No. I found it not only scary and pointless but also quite weak in the message delivered as well as the director's work. It was way too predictable and even boring at some stage. In the middle of the film I felt the strong message inside of me saying: why should I care about all these characters? They do not grow, they are not exciting and finally they are copied from some better films we all saw in the past. If something goes wrong in the kitchen the food that comes out to the clients does not taste good: the ingredients might all be right (excellent actors, well chosen surroundings etc etc_ but it simply does not glue together.
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: 4 KINGS NEW 4 Könige (original title) website RATE: 9/10
Being not native Germans we will never understand the significance of the title: 4 Kings. It is similar to name Russian movie Three Bears - if you do not know history or folklore you will have hard time to guess the meaning of the title. All I can say - the film is simply superb without getting into details of the title meaning! We do not need this to be honest. The plot is simple - four different teenagers are brought together by faith under the roof of psychiatric hospital, under the supervision of wise psychiatrist who makes very smart decision bringing out the human factor from all four from one side and a flight-over-the-coo-coo-nest nurse on the other side. The situations the teenagers face all shape them into the people with human faces while the characters are developing and the plot unfolds in front of our eyes: the shy and bullied at school Georgian boy while facing his biggest fears get changed; the difficult in controlling character of one of the girls get transformed from one episode to another, the violently behaving young man is also confronted by challenges etc etc. Although isolated they can not avoid communicating with people, there is nothing really that get changed for them: they have to learn how to adapt; nothing has changed for the and everything has changed. The story feels very natural not only because we all see a little bit of ourselves in all the characters shown: parents and children; children and parents; doctors and patients but also because there is no one single fake note played in this film. Even the doctor has his own dark soul corners that he is sharing with his patients. There us also the aspect of action and reaction shown so vividly right: there are active and passive characters but we see how some seemingly humble action can turn into an unexpected ugly reaction. We all should be responsible for our action as they bring a chain of unforeseen array of events that may be beyond our control. The film is complicated in its core: all I can say the ending is not promising but the light for sure in unavoidable.
The Age Of Shadows is another film set in 20-s about the war against Japanese invaders in Korea, The films portrays the war of resistance in its best colors: conspiracy, under-cover, hide-and-seek with little victories and little deaths, Independence movement is shown in its glory and it reminds us of many films we have seen in the past about the subject hat excited us many years ago. The film is far away though from the "ancient" and it done masterfully well - enough to entertain and bring the message across. The action is superb fresh and leaves behind many latest James Bond films by suspense, chases and cat-mouse games. I loved the colors, light and dark brown that the camera man used to show the period and get us into the feel of the era. The sound track is superb and there are much more classical music than you can hear in the conservatorium or music all these days. I also trust that Korean people will price up this movie much higher but even for the observer like myself who does not know much about the Korean-Japanese history at time of occupation it was historically valuable to watch. If you go you will sure have some pleasant time to laugh and some sad time to drop a tear. Total delight!
JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK NEW website RATE: 8/10
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is an example of a well done action movie/ thriller. Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) and Susan Turner's ( Cobie Smulders ) names are both on the list of government conspiracy that caused the death of two of Susan's soldiers... and well, Jack and Susan are both facing jail because of the dirty games in the head operation of government secret service. They need to uncover a criminal activity within the military government service in order to clear their names. As a parallel story to the major line Jack will face some personal issues that he had in the past and find out if the girl who the criminals are about to kidnap is his daughter or not. If you love action films you will totally enjoy this film as there are definitely more than enough action, violence and brutality in this film. Th first and very wild thought that came to mind after watching this film: the titles that wee given to many people in the old age were given to them for aggressiveness and killing the others - the more the army general would kill and win over the enemy the higher title he would get. The titles got carried through for ages. Now people are proud to wear and to have them but some of them forget how the title was awarded. Of course this is different nowadays and even scientists can get a Sir or Lord title for their services to the certain country. I had these thoughts while watching the aggressive behavior of the leads of this film. While the military uniform suits them very well the violence coming from the hands of a woman is very frustrating to watch. I also believe many of you will be drawn to the movie because of Tom Cruise. To be honest I have not seen that many films with him but the one that I will always remember was Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut where he was young and superb. The plot is rather simple (but not primitive) and has some unexpected twists that you will value if you understand the cinematography well enough to compare and evaluate. We could not resist also to compare this film with latest James Bond movies and should admit that Jack Reachers is definitely richer and is done much better. We hope you will enjoy the film too!
OUIJA :ORIGIN OF EVIL NEW website review by Bryanna Reynolds
The film Ouija Origin of Evil is one that is sure to delight and excite all you horror film fanatics.
The film follows the journey of a single parent family consisting of a mum and two daughters who try to make ends meet by working from home as a fortune teller. Her younger daughter finds comfort in using a Ouija board in hope of connecting with her father who had died.
The cast of characters took you on a whirlwind journey of fighting a presence in their home and with the addition of a priest from the girls school, things get rather interesting.
I found myself sitting in the cinema holding my hands over my eyes. I was quite jumpy and i think this was due to the sound effects throughout the film. While i wish there was more of a horror film soundtrack there was a fabulous array of sound effects used which were very scary.
There was one thing that i found funny and that was the amount of comedic moments throughout the film. The cinema would erupt in laughter at times. This may be due in part to the nervous tension felt throughout the audience. It would be interesting to watch this in another context to see the effect it has on people.
I feel like the film would be much more scary as well if you were watching with a bunch of friends in a dark room at home. I would definitely recommend this.
If you are a fan of the film Matilda, a children's film then you are sure to love this horror film. I would describe it as being a horror version of Matilda meeting the concept of the popular film The Conjuring.
I look forward to seeing more films from this creative team.
RUSSIAN RESURRECTION FILM FESTIVAL 2016: FLIGHT CREW NEW website RATE: 7/10
Flight Crew film is a thriller that will make your blood freeze. If you already know that Russian cinema is good this movie will not prove you anything new; but if you wee in doubt this is the film for you to watch and perhaps change your mind. the actors' performance is amazing; the special effects and graphics are superb (although was a bit too much for my personal liking). The story is very familiar: the over qualifies pilot is disqualifies for a small mistake he has not even done. He has to prove himself back to workforce. His personal life is also far way from perfect: the woman of his dream is simply slipping through his fingers: uncatchable and his family does not trust him anymore. Will he make the things right given the task which is hard to perform even for a first class pilot? Will he be again respected by his boss? Will he make it all without errors with his girl... and finally : will his father give him a manly hug of trust and honor? If you like an action movie with unpredictable ending - this is the story for you to go and watch!
BBC BRITISH FILM FESTIVAL 2016 I, DANIEL BLAKENEW website RATE: 10/10
I am not quite familiar with the Australian Social Security System as I do not know that many people who benefit from it nor we wanted ourselves to ever use the system for different reasons. The movie shows the days of Daniel Blake , the gentleman in his middle age who developed a heart condition and can not work anymore. He is forces to go and seek the government assistance. The actions take place in Great Britain. I had a strange feeling during the hole film as if it was a documentary filmed with the hidden camera so natural and superb the acting was of the whole crew. Daniel worked as a carpenter and thus is what he liked and still likes to do however he is not allowed to continue his work at the same company. The doctors' prognosis are negative and he can not come back to the same work place. Daniel meets a mother of two who is seeking welfare herself. She is in a similar situation. The social benefits however are not paid that easily to the people like Daniel and Katie, a single parent. They need to go through a number of interviews which seem endless, pointless and not achieving any result. Faced with high utility bills Daniel feels hopeless to fight the system so does Katie who is forced to go and search for the "easy" and ugly ways to earn money to support her children. The system turns Daniel, an honest person who only wants to work and to earn money the way he was taught to earn into a a fraud and liar. His protest against the system doe not bring any result either. the audience feels even less hopeless than Daniel and his friend. We are left with a bitter taste of deception and hunger, facing death and poverty from one side a battle with impersonal benefits system where there are no people just numbers and clients, customers and patients. I would not say that the movie does not show any light inside the tunnel: there is humor of course, there is love, care and warmth. We can say that despite the bureaucracy of the state system the system is only a system , but there are people who work inside the system who make it; the system consists of people. If there are no people there s no system, there is no institution. It is all about the care of the individuals inside that system that matters, no matter what the rules are there is always a human factor that can not be neglected. But what should a person do if he is not sick enough for receiving benefits and he is not healthy enough to gt back to work. He is left in between two worlds and none accepts him. Daniel problem is he is too honest to be part of this game as he refuses to take its silly rules. the sincere base of Daniel's character and the film itself, its heartfelt nature is beyond any words: it moves us deep emotionally and it s unmissable as love and life itself. Have you ever heard anything about the world of ugly poverty in its true nature> If you have an open mind and an open heart - this is the film for you to watch and remember. It is most heartbreaking to see that situations like this happen in the wealthiest country in the wold! Some might see a socialist or even communist propaganda in this film but they will be utterly wrong - there is nothing of that nature. I would say the film is far away from that. It is just a message on its own: there is a gap, there is an issue in the system that has to be fixed! Was the film brilliant - yes, it was!
ALLAINCE FRANCAISE CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL 2016: VIVA, MARIA!NEW website RATE: 7.5/10
For those of you who love French movies, for those of you who love French Classic movies and for those of you who fan Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau this is the best entertainment as you can find. Two Marias get together by accident: Maria I is the daughter of terrorist who dies caught on the spot of his crimes. Maria II is a circus actress who looses her singing partner due to an accident. They meet and create a band many men can not resist to listen to: they sing and well... they take their clothes off in front of the public while the circus vans are travelling from one Mexican village to another, Luttle the girsl knew about faith as they would be chosen to head a Mexican revolution. Viva Maria! is a terrific comedy with witty references to religion, government, revolutions in general and many more. You will not stop laughing if you are in the mood for a light and gilt free entertainment. I was also surprised that being created in 1965 the films still stands well today and it made many people laugh. The movie is also very feminine if I can say so: both girls are stunning and act astonishingly well! Although I found some of the film parts were a bit boring and the plot was having some gaps despite also being quite a long film it was a good experience to look back into the era of my parents. If you are going this year to the Classic French Festival place this one on your list - it is unmissable!
I was never a fan of Isabelle Huppert but in this film she owns practically every episode: she is magnificent, charming and very unpredictable - simply astonishing actress. Michele is a successful business woman who runs a production company that creates an animation games. The movie starts with a raping scene when a criminal breaks into Michele's house and leaves her unconscious on the floor. Despite the suggestions from her friends and relatives Michele does not go to report the incident to the police, she had enough of publicity in her childhood when her psychopath-father was put in jail for murdering. The movie keeps us in suspense for the duration of the whole horrific "dreams" of Michele: some are her imagination and some are in her reality. We can only guess who the rapist was. But none of our guesses would be correct: as usually he comes out unexpected. The film is not only about the incident though: Michele's personal life is out of order too: she is seeing secretly a husband of her best friend, she is unhappy about her son's relationship, she is not accepting her ex-husband's new love and finally she has some sexy-haunted dreams by her happily married neighbour. More to that her workers are making fun of her by creating an anime-character who looks like their boss. Everything is falling apart in her world and the raping scenes does not leave her sick mind even at nights... Will she solve the puzzle of her life?.. This is for you to discover I guess!
Well, sometimes I believe it is better not to do something rather than to do. This film would receive a rate of almost zero if it was not for Tom Hanks. Only Tom got my 7 out of 10 but he should get 10/10 if the movie was excellent. We all loved Da Vinci Code and other Dan Brown novel adaptations - they were all very well done and they should stop there. But just as they have not got it with Indiana Jones they could not resist to continue torturing poor Dan Brown. I did not read his novel but I am sure it is excellent. I can not say 100% this Inferno adaptation was as good as the previous Dan Brown's novels made out to films. the plot was weak and not engaging; the acting was as I said superb and this is not only related to Tom, the rest of the crew was excellent too. I loved some historical references - I believe they were very useful just for common knowledge: about Venice, Rome and Turkey - they were all Dan's gems I believe. The movie reminded me more of a good computer game - please take a look at the poster - even the poster looks like an invitation to play! I can not understand why but it was something very wrong with the direction of this particular movie : it was just falling apart like a badly constructed puzzle. It was extremely predictable as well. I guess for the other Dan's book they need either to change a director or rework a lot on making the movie more likable to watch!
JEWISH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2016: SAND STORM NEW website RATE: 8/10
Sand Storm is the drama which feels like a tunnel that does not have the light at the end. It describes the life of one Bedouin family that lives by the tribal rules. The film is about everything: life of the woman [ Jalila (Ruba Blal-Asfour) ]and her struggle in the world devoted entirely to men; her dealing with children, day to day duties and housework, children and parents, second wife and her dominating husband. The film also shows the side of the older daughter in the family: Layla (Lamis Ammar) whose only will is to marry to the love of her life and get her freedom to escape the ugly cage where women are treated like a piece of furniture and only serve men and their obsessions. We find out that the man in the family can sell his daughter to the man she does not want to marry, she can not choose whom she can love, the man can banish his wife from his house and return her without her children to her parents (who of course do not want her back), the man can also get himself and freshly new wife and spend his days as he wants: gambling, pleasing and entertaining himself. The woman can not say her word - even when she wants freedom to her own daughter, Even when the man understands himself that what he is doing is wrong he can not escape the traditions of the tribe - he has to follow the rules. But sometimes the rules dominate our own reasonable view on the world turning it upside down: I do it only because it has been done like this for generations. Finally we are looking into the eyes of a younger girl in teh family: may be she will break the rules or she might also remain in the system? Who knows?..
JEWISH International FILM FESTIVAL 2016: THE PEOPLE VS. FRITZ BAUER NEW website RATE: 9/10
This is the act of his like: to bring high-ranking German Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann to justice. His name is Fritz Bauer and he is German Attorney General who is so close to the end of his political carrier. He is hunting the ex-Nazis or this is how the film portrays him. We do not know if this is his ambition or something that he tries to prove to the German citizens or this is simply an genuine act for humanity. I am pretty sure also that German secret service always knew where the Nazis ran away and who was hiding where. The fact is that the secret service still was consisting of the ex-Nazi in 50-s and 60-s - why would the government get rid of the good workers who showed themselves already as devoted labor forces. It is cheaper to take the old ones than to teach the new. Bringing back the Nazis and war criminals was impossible for Germany just as they could have give away more names then the government wanted. The act of justice then for this and different other reasons was given to the Israeli secret service. Her Bauer had to work under cover so to speak so his own government would not guess what was going on. Fritz discovered the location of Adolf and the Israeli authorities would do the rest. The films shows the valuable information history-wise as well as one person's determination to do his work right despite all the barriers and difficulties on his way. It is a very well made story that is acted perfectly with amazing crew on board. Alex mentioned that such movie should open not only Jewish International Film Festival but also the German one in Australia as well as everywhere overseas. I found the movie to be very fresh for the well known and shown in many ways theme: Nazis, Germans and justice. It is so to speak "politically interesting" as many similar movies end up to be very dry ad boring. I am raising my thumb for incredible acting as well as the directing and script wiring. I iwll never forget the socks part as it was quite a funny bit of the movie!
Rose Dorfman: The man eats with Fred Astaire and Gary Cooper. Marty Dorfman: I’m impressed.
Phil Stern: Two time Academy Award winner. Bobby: Wow, congratulations. Hollywood Writer: Thank you. You’ve never heard of me, I’m a writer.
Party Guest:[to Bobby] Unrequired love kills more people in the year than tuberculosis.
Rose Dorfman:[to her husband] No answer is also an answer!
Night Club Guest: Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” But the examined one is no bargain.
Bobby: Life is a comedy written by a sadistic comedy writer.
Rose Dorfman: First a murderer, and now a Christian! What did I do to deserve this? Which is worse? Marty Dorfman: He explained it to you. The Jews don't have an afterlife. Rose Dorfman: We are all afraid of dying, Marty! But we don't give up the religion we are born into. Marty Dorfman: I'm not afraid to die. Rose Dorfman: You're too stupid to appreciate the implications. Marty Dorfman: I didn't say I like the idea. And I will resist death with everything I have. But when the Angel of Death comes to cut me down, I'll go. I'll protest. I'll curse. You hear me? I will go under protest. Rose Dorfman: Protest to who? What the hell are you gonna do? Write a letter to the Times? Marty Dorfman: I will protest in silence.
Bobby's mother says that you should live each day like it's your last, and one day you will be right.
Review The overall impression. This is one more masterpiece of Woody Allen. We called it classical because it is one of those films that you will want to have in your collection of DVDs together with his and other best directors works of art. It is a beautiful movie. It is a well balance movie: it requires a brush of a master to create a perfection where the drama in the film is well balanced with comedy. romance with, society with the individual characters, structure with chaos etc - that all that makes life itself. Alex told me that Woody Allen's films - all and this one in particular are like a good and well mixed cocktail: the taste is perfect and you will remember it years after - you will want to try it years after again and again: classics only gets better with years. Some films are like bad wine - they remain an aftertaste in your mouth; some are like strong drink - they hit you once and knock you down, you learn your lesson and you do not want to try it again. Sometimes a sip of a badly brewed and cheap beer will be the first and the last time you try it. The fine cocktail will never betray you. The actors. No words - the whole crew work like one entire unit that is lead my the conductor's talent. they never allow themselves to make any mistakes The music. Superb. The plot / the story line is so familiar to many of us. You make your life choice thinking she/he is the person of yoru dreams, Time passes and you suddenly realise there is something better: betrayals follow. Betrayals either leave scars on families or destroy not only yours but many lives... and finally: she/he becomes not so good as you thought it would be... Another betrayal will follow and the vicious circle will never end. Where is the solution: be happy with what you have - there is no difference whom you are with - we are all the same. You can change gloves every day - your hand remains the same - fix yourself and stop destroying the lives of others.... The solution seems simple but people are silly. Sometimes I think this is not us who think but someone else makes the decisions for us. Once again: this is a beautiful film - a must to see!
What a fascinating and glamorous start of the film that turn into one (and I am not afraid of this word) crap disaster of a plot. The scary part of the movies that involve violence that does not know the boundaries, rivers of blood, rape scenes, animal fear, kissing corps, eating and vomiting human flesh and so on and son on - they are not the scary pat - the scary part is that such sick stories are shown to our young generation with pretending to be an art. They vulgar, they are not acceptable - they have nothing for us to learn from rather than being disgust after watching it. I was close to fainting and vomiting in my own chair inside the theater. The trailer does not show the most unsuitable for human consumption scenes. If you have a chance - please miss this film and go and see something else. I believe the psychopaths who create such movies should not be supported! We a;ready have enough violence in this world and I am not prepared to see it again and again! Mot in such form for sure! When I started watching the film I was thinking: this is an awesome movie our fashion group would adore to watch but the second part of the film was so poor and revolting I would not recommend it even for horror loving fans.
The Girl On The Train is a mesmerizing story of one young woman whose personal life turned to be not as beautiful as she would have thought. Every day she takes the train to pass one house on the way and observes the life of the family living inside the house thinking that they might be happier than her; she practically starts living this family life and her obsessions takes her finally on the journey that she has never imagined uncovering so many secrets of her own life. She starts to remember bit by bit what has happened to her in the past and she takes in account the events that take place in the present. She is faced with the truth that will change the lives of many families involved... One glace out of the window that can turn into attachment and then uncover many crimes. The thriller will grab your mind strings and will not let them go til the very end of the story. I found the acting in this picture to be perfect; the story line was very intriguing but it was a bit too much for my liking... however as I mentioned many times before the real life stories can be more intense that the made up. The film was very good but it was not excellent perhaps because I was expecting too much of it. I also believe many young families will find the answers to many of their questions: first and the most important one is - why everyone else's family is happy and mine is not? the answer is all the families has their unhappy moments - there are no just happy families as there are no just happy people - we all have ups and downs; the family is just like an entity, it is like a person. It is impossible for us know what is happening inside the other families and especially it is silly to think that someone else's life is better than your own. This road can lead to jealousy and deep disappointment. The better was is to improve your own life rather than look into someone else's windows... There are much more good messages inside this film - for you to watch and discover!
This is a very powerful film. The events of this film take place during the World War II when American Army got involved in the Battle of Okinawa. The Army doctor Desmond Doss (Des) a soldier and army volunteer who could not touch the gun due t his religion and his own inner beliefs and who because of that was considered a coward among the other soldiers and the army commanders , he who was beaten by his army roommates just because he was different, he who was close to be charged by the military tribunal because of his beliefs , he who simply refused to kill because he knew it was wrong even at the war , he becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor only because of his actions during the battle carrying on himself 75 wounded soldiers from the battle filed to the hospital and risking his own life. The film is directed by Mel Gibson. I have to admit it is very hard to watch the battle scenes which to were quite brutal... but the film is based on real events, Des is a real person and we also know that in real life it might have been even more violent. The message of this film is quite clear: if you belief is strong everything in this world helps you. I also understand it does not make a difference where the courage, the love and the belief come from and what they are based on - we are all human and our actions should be human no matter what. I remembered in Russia during the World War II our young medical girls saved 100-s of lives with no apparent believes , some of their names are unknown, some of them are awarded the medals and badges. Your belief should be based on common laws of humanity, common laws of Universe. The movie is so strong (as our publicist has mentioned) it can get you some hours after watching: I burst into tears hours after the screening; I still feel so much for this one man, Des who saved so many lives. He not only made people around hi to look at him in a different way he turned many of us into better humans. It is not the bibles that saved him of course - it is his own high spirit and his personal high values an principals. I am always thinking: can one single person change the flow of history or it is the crowd deeds? Yes and no, Yes because the others learn from one person how to be as courageous as him, no because one man is nothing without the others who support him. Heroism can not be acted without the others being involved. I trust this film will not be lost on the shelves of dust together with the other movies in your collection, no, it will be always a point of discussion as the theme touched is universal and can be applied to the situations in the world especially when the wars break down between brothers and sisters and they do not make sense. I was thinking: if everyone was the same as Des, there will be no wars and the governments would be forced to solve the conflict on paper not by arms and by lives of other people. Perhaps we would have a better world if "Deses: would be in the government too...
Two brothers: one divorced with kids and another who was just released from jail for bank robbing are trying to save their family farm in not so usual way. If you like films with a little of that "cowboy flavour, blood, guns, brutality, lots f killing, bank robberies - this criminal drama is for you. I am personally not a fan, but this particular movie is very well done so I gae it all my thumbs for dynamics, actors great and natural performance and the camera work. The rate is lowed only because the story itself seemed a bit simple to me. The action takes place in Texas and the southern flavour is noticeable on every corner. My favorite episode was the ones in the local cafe when two policemen order T-bone steaks from an older lady. There is always two sides of the coin in robberies: one side is the men who want justice as the bank steal from everyone. When they take back what belongs to them -this is ok and we take it with laughter; but when peaceful civilians are killedfor nothing we are confused as it now seems not that simple. The other side of the coin is when the people (policemen) who protect these money get hurt - this is unjustified, But every crime planned even with good intentions sooner or later will turn into a disaster because what shall you take you shall receive. We can follow the brothers and we can see where their action might take them... and we get worried about them but at the same time we understand after what they have done the justice should take place... As we know there are no perfect crimes But every crime story ends differently. I would not say this movie was perfect though, it was good to watch and it was a good entertainment, You need to see this movie!
Bear: I am a Comanche. Do you know what it means? It means 'Enemy to everyone'. Tanner Howard: Do you know what that makes me? A Comanche.
It is one of those films that is impossible to rate. You will understand why when you watch it. The Deepwater Horizon is an offshore drilling rig located in the waters close to Louisiana state . The film is based on the real time events that took place in 2010 when the wrong orders were given to the workers of the rig by the BP company representatives. We all love action films, we all like drama on screen and we all love thrillers that freezes our blood. But when you know that the drama actually based on real time events all you experience is deep pain watching it: seeing people dying, burnt and wounded. You will have a handkerchief close if you pocket as the tears will follow as soon as the movie gets to it second part. It is becoming a question of morality: do such movie have its place on the screen? Aren't they even more painful for the families who lost their members in this disaster? What do we know and find out from such films apart of experiencing a deep condolences for those gone and for feeling horrible watching how people fight for their lives?.. I found the movie to be quite disturbing and apart from showing the heroes, the people who suffered because of one BP mistake people in reality are so vulnerable and so fragile... Was it a mistake to make such a movie? You can perhaps agree or not agree with me on that by watching it yourself. Please keep in mind also tat there is an array of very famous actors filmed: John Malkovich who plays the BP representative and Kate Hudson who played the wife of one of the rig's heroes.
This film is perhaps a funny joke on all of us. The man who tricked the whole CIA? Please, give me a break! We did not buy a word from this movie, forget about the plot or a story line. It is not about if the story was told in the most truthful way - not even about that. It is just sound kike a made up joke. For us there was no story, it was a fiction. We also believe that Sbowden himself have not realsied what he has done and how he has been used (this is just in case Snowden existed ever!) . Do you believe any country turns off their politics on spying on each citizen? I would never believe it - no government in the world would do that - if I was in the government I would continue spying on each and every citizen in my country and as a matter of fact - in the whole world. It is a matter of security and nothing else. I would like to argue with you if you think the opposite. Please tell me: this man is very very smart, ok, why in the right state of mind anyone would do what he has done? This is not smart - it only shows that CIA hires silly people... right? Or the ends do not meet here?...and if Snowden was so wrong why is he still walking happily and living smiling?.. Do we miss something important here? If you want to check out this film please go ahead and do it - I would like to hear what you believe in this story and what you did not...
It's fum, it's light and it is so uplifting you will be coming back home from the movie singing " TE POI ! PATUA TAKU POI PATUA KIA RITE PA-PARA PATUA TAKU POI E !.." Just learn the words before you start! WORDS Translation: Poi Swing out rhythmically, my feelings lean out beside me, so deceptively. Swing round and down, spin towards me just like a fantail.
Swing to the side: swing to and fro zoom down, wriggle, climb up above, swarm around me my whirling emotions, my poi, Yeah!
Oh my feelings, draw near, Oh my poi, don't go astray Oh my affections, stick to me Oh my instincts, take care of me Oh my emotions, be entwined around me.
Oh poi, our love... Oh poi ...binds. Poi.... my poi, yeah!
You guessed it right! This is the film about the song, its growth and its beautiful history. What is Poi E you will ask me/
I read in Wiki: ""Poi E" is a New Zealand 1984 number-one hit song by the group Patea Māori Club off the album of the same name. Its popularity is unique in New Zealand as Māori music rarely reaches popular status." Poe is Poi is a protective symbol The twirling poi is often used as a symbol of a young woman's affections. They are volatile, but with some energetic training, they protect her from danger. The film takes us on a journey not only of the song but the Maori people. I noticed one very interesting thing: during the screening there were lots of Maori people: they laughed so much as some parts of the story were very witty. Maori are very happy people. Why is that? I suppose this is because they live so far from the whole world they do not care about anything else but dancing, singing and loving their country... of course I am joking.... Have you switched the song on already? BE CAREFUL - IT IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!!
Combine a good and intriguing story line told from three different perspectives, add some healthy humor, excellent camera and terrific acting and you get yourself a picture perfect. The film describes Korea, in the period of Japanese occupation in 30-s. The movie starts: you are in the game - you should use your best knowledge and guess the outcome which is unpredictable. Who is more cunning in this game and who is going to win: love and money pot: is it a young maiden or perhaps her beautiful and rich Miss.or may be it will be the man who introduces himself and a Count but in reality he is a crook who is after the Miss' fortune....no, it might be the Miss' uncle who keeps the keys from his knees' wealth. You will never ever guess it! While the plot develops slowly revealing s more and more details about past, present and future, we only sit deep down in our chairs and open our lips in expectation of a happy ending... or will it take place? Where Love and Money will finally find its home landing?.. oh ... and I forgot the most important detail of this film: it is highly erotic too!. Well, I guess your eyes will be widely open and your jaw will drop... or who knows...
NATIONAL THEATER LIVE: THE DEEP BLUE SEA website RATE: 7.5/10
The story line will be recognisable by many of us in our young years: young man and young woman are trying to find themselves and to build the relationship that are falling apart at their every attempt. Although the main attention of the play is concentrated on Hester ( Helen McCrory ) who is madly in love and her attachment is more than obsessive, it looks sick and crazy. He attachment has no basement as the man she loves does not deserve her but the more he pushes her away from himself the more her madness grows. She is kind but cruel, she is soft but persistent , she is dislikeable by us but at the same time we see her image as reflection of our own obsessions, she is weak but she is determined in her goal. She simply does not understand the major life's rule: if she goes away first he will follow her but to do this she needs a second life or perhaps she needs a good and the other purpose in life - rather than her obsession. She needs to change her focus from Him to something which is more important in her life - perhaps Herself. In her search for love she looses Herself replacing herself with the image of the man who loves her in his own way, but of course not the way she she wants him to love her. Her lover ( Tom Burke ) is a drunker and she chooses him for her husband,a respectful judge when the relationship with the latter turn dull ice-cold and boring. Her lover is drowning himself in negligence towards the woman of his life - he forgets her birthday date but not only that - he is simply the man of a "different wave: to Hester. He lost himself as a professional pilot after the war when his job was his life purpose... But then what should be the life purpose? If not your job and if not the person that you love - what it should be to make us happy? I guess we all have to find this purpose on our journey and it is not easy. I found the acting performances of Hesta and her lover to be ultimately stunning but I would not vouch this for the rest of the cast - quite on the contrary it was a bit weak to our taste. I also believe that this is a must see performance just for the sake of the story and the main characters performance.
As I mentioned in one of my previous reviews: there are horror movies that can chill your blood and make it still like ice. But the real life stories are even ore horrific than the films. This is one of such stories. I gave it 10/10 for the story line told - it is about sick people, drug addicts and murders who come back from jails to the judicial system who kill people in the past but instead of spending 10 (which is small for such crimes!) were let go out of the jail on good behaviour parole ... You will say - what???? It can not be true! It is !! It is a real story that took place in late 90-s in Australian Capital Territory and that shook the world with its cruel violence. The girl drugged her boyfriend to death by manipulative actions , the girl whose sick mind took into this terrible story her friends and her University classmates. But this is only part of the story. I felt very sorry for the boy who let himself surrounded by so many lies of his cunning girlfriend - he was the most innocent and positive person in this story. I felt even more horrified observing the behaviour of the friends who were with the couple almost all the time and many were aware of the crafty plans. Their silence and ignorance killed Joe mainly. There are main characters of the story who created the criminal incident, but there are also the "passive criminals" whose killing tranquility was even more dangerous and in fact pushed Joe closer to his death. Although the story line was sensational and will raise lots of discussions after you watch the film I found the first 2/3 of the movie to be very slow and dull reminding of old Australian boring serials. The film took off beautifully in the last 1/3 of it. I love the acting of the whole cast though - it was absolutely superb and beyond any expectations. Again: the film deserves 10 for acting and story line, but the first part killed it - I lowed the rate accordingly.
THE BAULKHAM HILLS AFRICAN LADIES TROUPE website RATE: N/A
It is almost impossible to put a rate on such film. It is not only about the African Ladies Theater in Australia, where the girls play themselves and their hardship through life and their faith. This film is about the women who suffered in their lives the cruelty of men for many centuries, those who were sexually or physically abused and abused by words. It is about all of us who experienced such abuse in any way. It is a healing journey as well as harmonizing your present life and looking into the future. The women play themselves on stage in one fabulous theater production that many of us will find very painful to watch. I found it very courageous to bring these stories out. If I see this theater is in Melbourne I will go to see it though no matter what I will feel - just to support these powerful girls who managed to assist themselves and are trying to bring the message up to the other women and men. I guess many of you will not find the subject very attractive...well... unless you know the purpose of such project it is hard to judge. I find it is OK to talk about it as soon as it helps you and the others, as soon as the healing takes place and as soon as it might help to prevent the horror of the abuse. Yes, and as I said many of you will find this film too emotional to watch. I also found the work of Rs Horin to be absolutely amazing: honest, simple (but at the same time talented) and without any ego attached she is projecting a free will to the women who experienced violence in their home countries and escaped for their lives - it makes this project a total success and I feel nothing but respect to her amazing work.
CZECH AND SLOVAK FILM FESTIVAL 2016: EVA NOVA website review by Irina Ivanova
Eva Nová Czech and Slovak Film Festival Melbourne 2016
Eva Nová is a debut feature by Slovak film director Marko Škop who has got previous acknowledgement for his documentaries. At the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, this film won the prize of the International Federation of Film Critics. Eva Nová was shown during this year Czech and Slovak Film Festival 2016 that took place at ACMI, Melbourne from 14 Sep - 23 Sep.
Eva is an aging woman, former successful actress, who tries to find new sense in life after being rehabilitated from an alcohol addiction. Brilliantly played by the famous Slovak actress Emília Vášáryová, who does not shy out from the merciless close ups and comparisons of the 62 year old with a young beauty from the poster on a wall, Eva Nova invites the audience in for a reflection on the purpose of life and value of relationships.
Eva’s story is quite typical. An attractive young actress has lost herself playing someone else’s stories and pleasing other people. She’s never had a chance to find out her own personal values. Eva’s life has turned into partying, boozing and sleeping around, eventually leading her into a miserable existence of an abandoned, heart-broken alcoholic.
Neglected as a mother of a ‘bastard’ child in her marriage with director Ringer, she decides to pursue life without obligations of the motherhood and leaves her son Dodo (Milan Ondrik) to be cared for by her older sister Manka (Zofia Martisova). Growing just as selfish as his mother, Dodo cannot forgive Eva’s disgraceful behaviour and poor life choices. When Eva visits her son’s family after being discharged from the rehab, nobody’s pleased to see her, and Dodo cruelly throws her out the door.
Although things are tougher than ever, worsened by the necessity to look for a job and start a completely different work path, Eva tries to resist her addiction and stay afloat. Not wanted as an actress anymore, she finds a job at a supermarket. Off duty Eva changes her uniform for a pretty dress, putting a ridiculously pompous bow on (with which she expressly decorates her every outfit) in attempt to disguise her gloomy thoughts and excruciating emotions.
Škop’s drama observes a good deal of personality crisis, broken expectations and strokes of fate, but in the end Eva finds her redemption, which makes her perseverance all worthwhile.
FRANCOFONIA BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH website RATE: 100/10 (there is no typo here)
This film is a puzzle, it is a Pandora's box - while we open it all the ideas escapes leaving the Hope only inside. Why is a puzzle? The artist (Alexander Sokurov) only touches the subjects leaving many questions opened but some of them get answered in the mysterious ways. It is allegoric like many of his films. It is strong to the extend when you would want to see it once again and once again and many times after to get your questions answered. It is timeless of course as the high art should be. It is not one of those movies that you will forget the next day. I was in tears so were everyone who watched The Russian Ark back many years ago when it was screened at ACMI for the first time. No one knew why we were in tears back then - they are just very fine planes inside our souls that Alexander's creativity touches that we , humans can not explain. His films are far away from entertainment though they are pleasant to watch for all senses. The time passed and when I watched The Russian Ark again the tears were not there, they dried out and the life became more insensitive for us in years. Though more were revealed for me in that after years screening: the film appeared to be even deeper despite the tears vanished. Did we cry this time at the Francofonia? Yes, we did/ Again: with no apparent reason I just could not help it. Art and politics: while one is enriching us the other takes away from us. While one creates beauty and peace , the other... it is painful to say but the people who create - they know. As I mentioned the Francofolia is a multi-leveled picture. Some of us will want to see it 5 or may be 6 times before all the layers get revealed. And even then we will not find out what the director meant by this or that - the puzzle is meant to get opened in years to come. Why is it a Pandora's box? First of all - it is Hope only that is left inside bottled in, jarred in. We need the Hope as life will become hopeless. The ideas are freed though. Also: the film which is about the art and the beauty, the life and the power, the humanity and history , the film is also about the unforgiving deeds, about the sacrifices, about he Paris' Louvre museum which perhaps costs more than the whole France (if the cost can be applicable to such priceless pieces of art). There is just one interesting thought that Alex has shared with me when he said that the film is not really a documentary - is it more like a philosophical tractate or monologue about art and its place in our world. There was the part that stroke also: when the historical figures ( the administrator of the museum and the Nazi art maven ) of that time were seated and they were told their faith in the next forty years: not the form that was also so attractive of bringing this on but also the reaction of these people.... There is one more: try to answer this question: while the art is considered by many governments and authority officials as pointless and not profitable business why do they still take care of it despite their hatred of people who create? What else is there to add? Sokurov is one of our favorite directors, not that his art will attract lots of admirer: it is not for many but this kind of art that He creates will remain forever. If you do not have a spoiled and selective taste in movies - do not bother to go - you will not find what you are looking for in this film - it is not a mass media entertainment. I would not even call this film an art house as many of you know: there is no unstructured mess of things in the middles of the room, naked bodies and rubbish when the film director is an equivalent to the drug addict whose thoughts you will never follow nor understand: on the contrary Sokurov's picture is the art house you can find in art: i is well recognisable, amazingly done and very pleasant to watch. The soundtrack is very well suited - like Napoleon's mundir and his hat - perfect for every episode's battle. I gave the film 100 out of 10 as this is one of fav films in the last years since Faust and The Russian Ark... The last remark to finish my long story: it would be very interesting to read the script separately from the film - the text is remarkable! Art will always remain beyond wars and political ambitions, beyond economics and beyond the changes in the outside world, but it has a price - it can be bought and sold, we care about it as some of the cultures that are gone - their art can not be repeated or copied. Have we learned anything from the losses of the civilizations passed? Is the phrase at he beginning of this documentary: " I failed while filming this movie..." and around which the story line is built - is it in power?
PERSIAN FILM FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT: THE SALESMAN website RATE: 9/10
We know by now that if the film starts with a picture of an empty house with some left overs of the furniture , you should not expect it to be pleasant.
We found this film was quite strong but it was more scary than a mysterious horror film to watch: the realty is always more scary than the imaginary world. The word is cruel, it is more cruel than I ever thought. I even find animals have more compassion and love than humans. Which Gods have created us copying thyself? We all came out to be unfair to each other, greedy as if we live this life forever, ungrateful and demanding. We all turn to be sinful and barbaric to the extend of not feeling guilty for what we have done. Even religious believes can not stop some people from turning into the ugly beasts. The man has sinned in the movie and abused the woman in the most horrible way. We, watching this film can not find the forgiveness in our hearts to let this go - we all want the bastard to be killed for his deeds. We can not understand how these thoughts could come into his small and ignorant mind. He thinks that he can get away with his unjustified actions however the right justice and his faith finds him. He faces his own lies and he can barely take it. The punishment is so clever, so brutal and so sophisticated the audience can not feel for the criminal and now we do not know what side to take: the offender's of the "mediator". We now feel for both... and the theater continues its acts... We can not differentiate now where is the play and where is the reality. The film is a deep psychological drama and we observe and judge it according to our own believes and upraising... There is point to take sides - as I say" life is unfair to everyone and we are ALL cruel.

Mila Fog is a 10 minutes mystical journey through time and space: sometimes celestial. sometimes earthly it takes us on a gentle ride through Nature's forests following the artist's imagination and accompanied by magical animals and birds, seeds and creatures, human made and unreal objects - the trip is meditative and mythical as life itself. If you like unusual animations with delicate emotions attached - you will adore this small masterpiece of art. I only wished it was a bit longer...
CZECH AND SLOVAK FILM FESTIVAL 2016: THE BALLAD OF SIMON AND TERESA BALADA O ŠIMONOVI A TEREZE website RATE: 8/10 review by Jeanette Russel
Thank you for the opportunity to review this short movie. It is from the Czech and Slovak Festival. This stoy is about Three main characters. Simon Teresa and Matej. At the great war's end Simon returns home from the said war. He has been effected physically and mentally. There are two brothers the older one Matej has asked Teresa to marry him. She doesn't answer his proposal. Upon Simon's return it is clear who she yearning for. Matej catches them kissing and realises that Teresa's heart does not belong to him. He is it seems clearly very upset. He teaches Simon a lesson . As Simon is already very ill it is not a good outcome. Both Matej and Teresa are clearly religious and bear the weight and guilt of the outcome, of Simon's demise. This short film is set in the great war. It has English subtittles . Directed and written by Martin Hnat it is a tragic story of struggle religion and the loss of hope and eventually life. This moving ballad includes beautiful countryside and scenery. Very well done as a short film. I give it 4 out of 5.
CZECH AND SLOVAK FILM FESTIVAL 2016: CHRONOS website RATE: 9/10 review by Jeanette Russel
From the Czech and Slovak Festival, Chronos is a short film about 10 mins in duration. This story starts out with a busines man drinking at a hotel bar. He returns to his room and then the hallucinations begin. Clearly disturbed this man is seeing everything upside down. Apparantly at the same time, time itself is running backwards. . An amazing twist at the end keeps this movie action packed. The director and screenwritter Martin Kazimir has kept this short vimeo video very interesting with great visual effects. There is no dialogue in this film. It won a Phillip K Dick Short Film award. Thank you for the chance to review it. I found it to be quite fasinating. Therefore giving the movie 4 1/2 out of 5.
The Queen Of Ireland film is touching the most important subject we face now: the equal opportunity for everyone in the world and the world understanding of homosexuality. We saw many excellent movies about the subject in the past and some of them were exceptionally well done (Milk and many more). The documentary is quite revealing in some parts, some parts er found extremely vulgar and not to our personal taste but overall we got the point. It is not about the progress in the world about the subject - it is more about the minds of the people (and us) accepting or rejecting such relationship. If there is love - why there should be any restrictions who marries whom/ Why the others should decide whom you CAN love and who not. It is no one business and this is not about marriage and the certificates. Certificates are papers only. It is not about the paper - it is about the state of mind. It is projected on us by the wrong religious believes that something should be this or that way. But God does not have a gender. He/she is not a man no he is a woman. The laws who can marry whom were written thousands of years ago - they are still supported. Although the topic touched in this film is extremely important the movie is not vert well dome, it is based on interviews which are blend with the live scenes from the shows and the meetings with public. It was not done to our taste as we did not see much talent nor effort put into creating the picture. At one stage I thought it is a self-praising movie of something that is not there. This subject is very delicate and it needs a delicate touch not the self-loving, stage and attention loving yelling over-done-with-make-up superwoman aka mother Teresa who takes everything upon herself in the world evil salvation. Life is not only about the stage and the gay bars. There is an important core missing here. We are propagandizing love and compassion here and accepting people as they are not the self -admiring super-woman.
Julieta is a tender story about the life of a woman pictured from her young age to her middle age hours -spring to summer so to speak. Julieta's daughter Antia disappears for 12 years and does not not want to talk to her mother hiding in the spiritual retreat from her. The long time absence of her daughter is explained by the death of her father and Julieata's husband in the accident during the harsh storm while he was fishing in the open sea. First time we meet Julieta heart broken in Madrid where she lives with her boyfriend and decides to move to Portugal. This trip is prevented by a sudden meeting with Antia's girlfriend from her teenage years, Bea, who tells Julieta the story that she met Antia recently and that her daughter lives in Switzerland and has three children. This sudden meeting triggers all the past memories in Julieta's mind about the time she was with her first husband Xoan. Julieta starts writing her story. Will mother and daughter meet again and will they forgive each other?.. What I liked about this film was quite a strong cast, good and emotional acting although the story seemed a bit long and some details were mentioned without any reason.
It is a very well done technically animation. But the story line was not convincing enough for me. I hope the kids at the preview enjoyed it though. I could not help myself but compare this fantasy anime with THE RED TURTLE that we also watched this week. The comparison although did not do any good for the Storks. It seems that I simply could not connect enough with this idea of family receiving babies in packages from the birds. The character were also not that very brightly pictured and I simply can not remember any of them after a could of days. I am fan though of animations in general. Although superbly done and drown this particular adventure was lacking something that the good animation stories all have: a bit of gentleness or tenderness perhaps. Plus the funny moments were also not highly satisfactory. It might be only my personal opinion: the kids noisy at the beginning of the film were enjoying the second half of the anime with great pleasure. Overall I believe the film is perfect for the day out with family, kids and popcorn.
The remake of Blair Witch was a film that ticked many boxes for me and i will definitely watch it again.
I do have to say that i am a horror movie buff and love anything remotely related to suspense and/or thriller so that does sway my judgement a little.
This film is definitely for people out there wanting to feel the creepiness of being in a forest so if you don't like being surrounded by trees, this probably isn't for you.
If you are familiar with the original Blair Witch film i think you will be able to draw upon many comparisons present in both of the films. Whilst this is neither a positive or negative emotion related to the viewing of the film i do think it is important to mention.
The film is much like the original with some of the best moments rehashed. Meaning there isn't a lot of new content or scripting changes.
I would have loved to have some new twists and surprises included in the film but that i will leave to viewer discretion.
When i am watching a remake i don't really want to see the exact same film as the original and at times it did seem to mirror the first film a little too much.
How ever, if you have not seen the first film then you will enjoy it to the max. it is an enjoyable film if you like horror and it is definitely not the worst film i have ever seen. To be honest if there was a Blair Witch 3 i would most definitely see it because i believe that movie franchises can improve.
This type of film is aimed at the younger thrill seeking audience so if that is you i would recommend to see it. Also be careful if you are watching in a dark movie theatre as you will probably feel 10x more petrified.
If you haven't seen the original Blair Witch i would recommend viewing it just as much as this one, so that you can appreciate both films for what they are.

review by Atmiya Patel Movie has quite an interesting start full of those spooky bits as the horror movie admires are waiting for. In the remastered 1994 version I loved the sound, the makeup, the visual and the plot which I found to be a very impressive masterpiece. Overall it was unbelievable expression that is worth watching for sure.
THE RED TURTLE NOMINATION FOR THE BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH website RATE: 10/10
This is one of the most beautiful and poetic animations I saw in the last year. There is not one word pronounced from the screen but millions of words were said and it really felt like we watched not a mute film but the film so full o sound.... I have to admit that this animation soundtrack is absolutely stunning. Please spare some time and go to see this movie. From the first few notes it will put you into a meditative state of mind. The young man is finding a refuge on an island after the ship wreck. He feels lonely and he builds a raft to leave the abandoned place. His raft gets broken from beneath the sea while he is few meters away from the shore. After few attempts he gives up but he wants to find out who did this. It was certainly a humongous power that destroyed his rafts; someone with the power from the deep waters, someone he could not see. In the next couple of days the events on the island develop the way that his life will be forever changed. He meets someone so special that he does not want to leave the island anymore. The island is like your life: deserted an isolated from the beginning it receives its meaning when someone with the inhuman power invades your space. You let the person in and the miracles happen one after another: suddenly you discover a creator inside yourself. The movie is so fine and so delicate it is hard to retell and it is not my duty to do so to be honest... I want every soul to watch it: to find something for yourself inside every sound and every splash of water from the screen... perhaps you would like to sleep under the stars one day too... I was thinking: how Russian this fantasy is... and how Russian the artist was when he was creating this beauty... Not one movement is repeated, not one animal is shown twice, not one joke is misunderstood, not one tear is wasted... Graceful and unbelievable!
She is a business femme fatale: she is a corporate shark who loves challenges as long as they involve substantial amount of money. She is highly professional in everything she touches: gold, real estate, global corporations and men. Nothing escapes her teeth. You look at the brilliant acting of Anna Gunn who plays Naomi Bishop and you totally convinced that this is the real face of the business woman who will never miss what belongs to her. Her work so successful in the past that looks like a solid wall of brick layers suddenly gives a crack: one of her deals she simply looses. She takes another work and it seems that a woman of her caliber will get it right this time but the circumstances are all beyond her reach: her faith catches up with her as if letting her know that she has to stop somewhere and let herself breath. Suddenly the whole world goes against her: she is trying to find the end of this web of lies and betrayals in the world where humans are nothing but money are everything. She game is honest though: she knows how to play by the rules. One thing she does not take into account that everything can be sold and bought - it is the matter of price. While she tries to untangle the maze and define who is who in that game of dishonesty against her she realises that she missed the most important things in life... We feel sympathetic for Naomi, but we also understand that she was the one who pulled the trigger while the gun was aiming at herself... It is good entertainment and it is a great pleasure to observe Anna performing this character so naturally and so brilliantly well...
AICE ISRAELI FILM FESTIVAL 2016 OPENING NIGHT: FIRE BIRDS website RATE: 8/10 Take one 80-years old man and three 80-years old women, add a criminal detective to them and you will get a perfect story with the suicide, murder, love triangle and past and present blend together in one bowl. Add some spice: the Holocaust survivors, fake forearm tattoos, private Jewish Holocaust survivors club, filthy rich and old people so poor they have no breakfast to eat no tie to wear to a party and the dish will get even more attractive. You will cry and laugh, laugh and cry, but you will more laugh than cry and you will enjoy this little detective comedy or little dramatic romance. As to acting I can say only one thing: old people play better than young as they do not have to pretend much: it just comes out naturally. When you live for so ling you organically become a good actor: the longer the game the better you play. in it. You will find some good lines and great surprises while watching this film. Although we found some weak points in the film the overall impression was sensational. One good film you do not want to miss.
I am not a big lover of the horror movies even if they are done well. It was also a bit unusual for me to see the movie made in Iran with that horror flavor just as the trailer did not reveal it I have to admit I was not prepared to such events development. The first 3/4 of the movie were ok to watch, but the scariest part started towards the end. I simply closed my eyes and opened them only when the titles were floating on. No matter how spooky the film was and how the entities appeared in it unexpectedly the most terrifying part was the war - if I took all the "scary bits" and say it was the interpretation of war fears that turned into monsters that horrorised the living humans in the house that would be reasonable. I believe this film will find its audience not only among the people who love horror movies but among those who would interpret the frightening episodes in the way I mentioned above.
ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: PERFECT STRANGERS Perfetti sconosciuti website RATE: 9.5/10
It is a daring game to play indeed! The long time friends meet for dinner. There is nothing unusual and the conversation is getting boring and loosing its flavour. We only can notice that out of this 7 people gathered at one table (3 couples and one guy who never brings over his partner) , we only notice that one couple is very unhappy. Before attending the dinner they hide their strange and hidden from each activity who knows where: in the bathroom or behind the bedroom doors. Nevertheless our expectations reveal that not only one couple is suffering from lies and infidelity. The very strange game starts at the table in the middle of the dinner just before the desert is served/ They all put their phones on the table openly and will reveal the information from every email, message, text and phone call that is coming through. They will share the nature of the text and the message and explain it in front of everyone. This is when the fun begins and the doors start to slam. To be honest I have not laughed like this fro a long time... They now all know about each other in less than an hour. And when all the cards are open and there is nothing else to say.... the ending will shock you even more... Be prepared to some serious laughs and some very funny drama. Pointless to say the actors are ALL superb. I found only two familiar faces: Giuseppe Battiston (as Peppe) and Alba Rohrwacher (as Bianca) but the rest of the crew is also very appealing and as I mentioned portray their characters immaculately well. My score is 10 and Alex's is 9
When I came home after watching this film I could not stop talking about it: it was very sad to watch some episodes of it, not sad: it was even horrible to watch. It was also emotionally disturbing film as it contained some deep philosophy: how the kind deed can turn into an evil one no matter what your intentions are and how it actually turns into a kind deed after all. I am more and more convinced that this world is far away from being fair. But mainly it is not about fair or not fair , it is finally about what YOU are in this world, It is finally about you and what you do for yourself. At the end many good deeds do - are just for ourselves not for the others.... and this is normal. Finally there is no one else in this world - just yourself. But let's go back to the original film. A teacher and obviously not a very rich gentleman publishes an ad in the newspaper where he is writing that on Wednesday, May the 9th he will give (perhaps, I am only assuming) a large sum of money (approx $30,000) to the person who needs it the most. On the day notified the office were he would run through all the applications - there is a huge crowd of people. How will he decide who is worthy of his gift? Do you think it will be a hard solution? ... and the final questions: why is he doing this? What are his motives? There are 500 people at the doors waiting for his word. The local government is disturbed as they can not understand what is going on? There is no peace on the street and the agitated crowd is surrounded by the police forces. The further the story progresses the more we find out about the lives of the ordinary workers in Iran: their challenges and their dreams, their culture and their religious believes, their fates and their fears, their lies and their truth... We can only guess how unhappy the gentleman who is giving away the money was to start such a campaign. Will the gesture bring him back his happiness/ Will he saves someones life with his fortunate gift? Or perhaps many lives?... I found the movie was amazingly done. The actors all played their characters so well I was thinking they might have found the real people on the street and were filming a documentary. The movie is very emotional, I also recommend many of you to take the handkerchief just in case...
Not much do we know about the day to day life and challenges of the disabled people. The movie shows it so close you can hear the person breathing on you from the screen. I heard a little about the struggles the people with autism and their families go through but I would never imagine how hard it is just to live one day next to the person with such disability. But the film is not only about the confrontation of the illness and the hardship of everyday life. On the contrary: it is about the way out of certain situations though the games, but more precisely: through the beautiful world of animation and its characters. Never leaving the childhood? No, not exactly but I suddenly remembered my mom who taught me not to work but to play to work, not to clean the house but to play that I clean the house, not to do my homework for school but play my home lessons. I earned the most important tasks through the games like a little puppy learns how to hunt by playing with the small rubber ball. There is only one thing was missing: my emotions were real and could not play any games with that. The movie is very similar: the parents of the boy with autism discover that their child learns faster if they include Disney characters in the process that look more like a conversation from the animation story rather than a real life.... Will this help the boy when he is grown up already to deal with his heart and emotions? You will see, This movie is amazingly done and deserved the best rates indeed.
KOREAN FILM FESTIVAL AUSTRALIA 2016 DONGJU: THE PORTRAIT OF A POET website review by Nadia Pleshkova
"DONGJU: The portrait of a poet" is a historical and emotional Korean movie, depicting the short life and dramatic journey of DONGJU, a talented young man who is passionate about writing poems and dreaming of being published. Unfortunately the circumstances of a colonized country by Japan at the start of World War II dictate a certain harsh destiny for DONGJU and his cousin, seeing them move to Japan to change their last names into Japanese. Not being able to publish poems in his native language, DONGJU seeks ways to print his works by translating them into Japanese and English. Sadly though, being suspected of anti-Japanese activities, he is inprisoned eventually to die from secret unknown injections, given weekly to the prisoners by Japanese authorities never to see his work published. This is a heart breaking story of a world renowned Korean author of "The Heaven, the Wind, the Stars and Poetry" publication, consisting of 19 poems, written during his incredibly brave life.
THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK - THE TOURING YEARS website review by Jeanette Russel RATE: 9/10
Appreciate the opportunity to review this flim/documentary, The beatles eight days a week-The touring years . Ron Howard produced, and directed the film, about the Beatles rise to fame, an impressive job. Incorporated is footage of world tours taking in many countries. America was widely featured including at the end, of the doco, 1/2 an hour of recorded footage from Shea stadium in New York. Captured is the reaction of the fans. Some actors, musicians, entertainers ect have been interviewed on their perspective of the band during the years 1962 - 1966 which adds yet another dimension to the documentary. The Lennon / McCartney songwritting team wrote almost 300 songs together, sometimes churning them out in quick sucession as required by their manager. The camaraderie between the beatles is shown during their touring years. How they formulated their music was featured, as well as how decisions made by the group were at that stage all inclusive of all the band members. Their unique and much sort after talent was showcased during the film. It was a very informative and interesting doco. Suitably impressive I found was how young they seemed, to be handling so many factors and facets of their lives. Enlightenment about the Beatles included many no. 1 hits that stayed at the top for weeks some even months. Details provided in the film/doco were absorbing. To me this film was engaging and thoroughly entertaining. Personally I was delighted by the music, harmonies, and insights into this world class band. I would like to score the film 4 1/2 out of 5. With thanks, from Jeanette Russell.
SULLY NOMINATION FOR THE BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH website RATE: 10/10
From wiki: "On January 15, 2009, veteran US Airways pilots Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffery "Jeff" Skiles board US Airways Flight 1549 departing from LaGuardia Airport and take off. Barely three minutes into the flight, disaster strikes, the Airbus A320 hits a flock of geese, which cripples both engines of the A320. Without engine power and no airport within range, Sully is forced to land his ill-fated airliner in the frigid waters of the Hudson River. With 155 passengers and crew on board, Sully, against immeasurable odds, successfully ditches the aircraft, sparing the lives of the crew and passengers and he is dubbed a hero by the press for his actions. But soon afterwards, Sully's life is invaded by reporters and investigators who force Sully to put his job, family and reputation on the line." .. Unique story base do real events that made a hero out of the airplane captain in 3 minutes. The whole word talked about him in 2009 after this accident. Apart from being unique it is also a very sensitive story. Alex was a bit doubtful going into the theater that the 3 minutes pilot trip can make a 96 min movies. He simply said to me: what it will be about? We all know the story - what is more there to tell? Obviously Clint Eastwood is not an ordinary person taking and directing the story on such subject. At the end of the movie Alex simply said: I am surprised to give this movie full 10 out of 10 as it is brilliantly made - not one word is said in vain and not even one episode was captured on camera that was not necessary. Should I also say that this is one of the best Tom Hanks' roles? He is playing the captain of the airplane and we believe him to the core of his essence. We love him being a hero and we want him to win at the public hearing when his actions were questioned. Well, let's say: the pilot has doubted it himself. But being an experienced 42-years in the air skilled pilot all he did was - following his intuition. I have no doubts Tom was the right person for this role and he has done it with all his heart. Well, now back to the question - how the 3 minute experience be created into a 96 min movie? Well, there is the past events and there is the family matters, there is the current situation and dealing with insurances, there is also a most important aspect: the main hero feeling and his nightmares shown. We are all heroes in this or that way saving lives of others day after day. This story is unique though by its own heroes: first of all the crew that saved all 155 passengers and got them live and healthy back home. Secondly because we know about these heroes now and we knew them back then in 2009. I also liked the story as it is so inspiring and so touching - the cinema hall was all in tears watching what the captain of this airplane lived through and how wise he was making his decision in seconds. It was just incredibly amazing what Sully, a USAF Academy graduate, a former F-4 pilot and a glider instructor did for everyone - simply amazing - I should say it is a miracle but no, as the miracle would exclude the human factor which was way too significant in decisions he made! I have all my thumbs up for recommending this movie to the wider audience - for everyone as a must see!
LA CONFIDENTIAL AT BACKLOT STUDIOS website RATE: 10.10 review by Anastasia Lubkova
L.A. Confidential is an American crime film (1997) tells a story of the police corruption in Los Angeles and Hollywood sleaze. The movie is loosely based on James Ellroy's 1990 novel of the same name, the third book in his L.A. Quartet series.
The action of the movie takes place in the city of Los Angeles, which is like every other city, has it’s own unique beauty and its own little secret stories. Interestingly, back in 1950s Confidential was a monthly popular magazine that was selling millions of copies with its seamy exposes of celebrity sex and drugs, and the movie exposes the spectator to the fascinating and sometimes even shocking insights of the city.
Although L.A. Confidential has been ranked by TIME magazine as the best film back in 1997, it feels that it has not lost its relevance nowadays. A diverse gallery of characters played by Hollywood stars, such as Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger and Danny DeVit, brings the parallel realities of Los Angeles to life such as glamorous beauties and ambitious and charming men of one world cross abruptly into the twisted, dissolute and lawless terrain of the other. The storyline describes three very different cops are all after the truth but each in their own style.
One of the reasons L.A. Confidential, that has been nominated for nine Academy Awards and won two, is so good is because this seductive and beautiful movie that has set up the moral tone and pulling a lot of the plot threads not only just for its plot and atmosphere, but because of convincing and sophisticated characters here, that made the movie absolutely timeless. Score 10/10
KOREAN FILM FESTIVAL AUSTRALIA 2016: ASSASSINATION website RATE: 7.5/10
It is perhaps the best actin film that we have seen in the last month. The acting is also sensational although: again we had issues with identifying who is who (men now) character-wise. The story started to make sense close to the 1/3-rd through. It is intriguing but some parts especially the father not being able to recognise and differentiate between two of his twin daughters is doubtful. The overall impression from the movie was very good. I was amazed how well the atmosphere of the 30-s was captured in the surroundings and the episodes set ups. It also a very valuable film history-wise. We know so much about WWII and who was who and who took what sides however we know little about Japanese invasion to Korea and how the civilians were taking it, how the national independence movement worked and what was the government position. Assassination stays for its name and supports it loyally throughout the whole screening as violent scenes go one after the other countless and in you are into action movies you will not have time to breath. What we found really hard was that the movie was partially made in Japanese and partially in Korean languages. I believe it was an important part of the plot - knowing who is the enemy and who is not. As we read the titles we could not say who talks what language - this was lost for us in translation so to speak. We like the film muchly and would recommend it to everyone who doe snot know the Korean culture to watch it and learn something new. For those who is into the culture already - there is no need to recommend this movie will find you - I am sure - 100%!

MOONWALKER AT BACKLOT STUDIOS website review by Nadia Pleshkova
The movie "Moonwalker" (1988) portraits Michael Jackson's career through a collection of various concert footages and video clips. As soon as moonwalker's leather shoes appear on the screen, the cinema audience start clapping and cheering in anticipation of the coming craft. Michael himself plays a main character fighting the evil mr Big and proving that kindness always wins. The story has lots of funny parts and great effects to make you smile. The dark sky with millions of bright stars is featured throughout the movie a few times symbolizing Michael as the brightest star out there. His incredible dance moves with every cell on his body projecting the rhythm of the music is a true gift to fans to enjoy his talent on the screen. If you are a fan of this incredible artist, you will watch this movie again and again without failure. You will also, like my friend who mimics MJ's moves, still feel sad these days of such a loss. It was interesting to hear my teen daughter commented towards the end of the movie" It's depressing to realize that MJ would never give anything again to the world". But he did give so much to make the world a better place.
This film will certainly remind you a detective story: it reveals its secrets bit after bit leaving the major revelation till the very end of the movie. We loved the film. I liked the landscape snaps: it is filmed in the remote village in Korea and the country-side surrounded by mountain beauties is absolutely stunning! As to the main characters it was interesting and sad at the same time to observe how the most honest "songs" of very genuine villagers were turned into crimes (they never would commit) by their next door neighbours. The story line will strongly remind you many of our every day life stories. We realise closer to the end of the film what happened to The Mute, the main female character: only then we know why she is so self-absorbed, quiet yes, she is mute and acting like a crazy person, We are shown her life tragedy in glimpses of the past that run down through her mind and when the whole story is built up we can not hide the horror. The Mute and her helper, the young man whom she falls in love with are defenseless: not only they choose not to speak out about their innocence - one because of her physical disability to do so and the other one because he is a noble man but also because they do not want to defend themselves. They simply choose not to speak: the accident happens after the accident and The Mute's husband got killed in the array of such accidents, but the truth is unspoken. The Truth does not need to be proved or defended - it is simply there. They act and play the Truth. If The Truth needs to be approved it becomes a lie, it turns into an ugly lie. But the chosen silence of the young couple obviously does not serve them right in the social world. In the socium it rather leads them to self-destruction (as a rule) - they are now accused in all possible sins and crimes that never took place. Mysterious inside the others scares ignorant people; it makes them get violent - if they can not understand something they kill it (let's remember what happened to Jesus who was not understood and was destroyed). I really loved the selected actors for all the roles, as well as the story and the philosophy behind it although Alex found some of the movie parts were a bit unbelievable: when the crowd became way too violent he thought it was overdone a bit... I can not argue with him - I can only follow my feelings and I felt for the young couple and I truly understood where they found the power to be silent to the very end... Beautiful story - well made, amazingly presented and passionately depictured
KOREAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: LIKE FOR LIKES website RATE: 9/10
The film consists of three story likes that blend with each other. It concentrates of 6 main character. Firstly (as we are not native Korean people) we thought it would be very hard for us to capture who is who and we were confused as some of the main heroes looked alike. Then we finally managed to figure out who is who and the characters were all brightly pictured and had very distinctive personalities. It is a well done mixture of a comedy , romance and drama - very unique, a bit cheesy but extremely adorable. I believe it will attract people of any age as it is firstly very entertaining to watch and secondly has amazingly talented crew. We have not noticed not even one small mistake in acting - well, for all main characters and for supporting roles as well. It is a "good time: film but it is not empty and it is full of good and deep philosophy behind the lines. Three couples - three different love stories - meaning: you will enjoy three times more than one one love story!
AICE ISRAELI FILM FESTIVAL 2016: KEEP QUIET website RATE: 4/10
Should we believe anything filmed by politicians and for politicians? The whole movie sounded for me like a good PR campaign smartly put together. The other thought that visited my mind during this media preview (and please forgive me for this as I might never be invited to the media previews for the AICE Israeli Festivals after this but I can hardly hide it...) : why suddenly our identity is defined by our nationality, the color of our eyes, by the language we speak, by the clothes that we wear etc etc and by our political believes? They are all fake attributes of our identity. We are not that. We are not nationality, religious believes and what we put in the top of our heads - they are again, pseudo- identities that do not sustain the changes that happen to us through our lives. I always thought our identity (or who we are) is not defined by anything meaningful or anything that you can see, touch or hear... Our identity is un- pronounced un- identified.... Let's see:
"WHO AM I?"Who am I?" has no answer to it; it is unanswerable. Your mind will supply many answers. Your mind will say, "You are the essence of life. You are the eternal soul. You are divine," and so on and so forth. All those answers have to be rejected: NETI NETI - one has to go on saying, "Neither this nor that." When you have denied all the possible answers that the mind can supply and devise, when the question remains absolutely unanswerable, a miracle happens: suddenly the question also disappears. When all the answers have been rejected, the question has no props, no supports inside to stand on any more. It simply flops, it collapses, it disappears. When the question also has disappeared, then you know. But that knowing is not an answer: it is an existential experience. OSHO."
The politician is obviously thinking that by changing his believes from extremist Nazi who hates and kills Jews and calls for destroying Israel and that that Nazi camps were all invented by Jews - he changes himself into a Orthodox highly religious Jew (only because he suddenly finds out his parents were Jews) - and he mistakenly thinks it will change his relationship with this world... but most likely will get him more votes... He only lies to himself. Nothing will change. As a child and a teenager I also never knew that my ancestors were Jewish but this is, I only found out when I was an adult: y parents also hid it from me as we all had to keep quiet from who we are - Jews were not in favour in Soviet Union - but the knowledge of my nationality did not change me as a person - I still was the same... again: this is not about nationality. We are all the children of one parent - ONE and only one! How can one be different from the other? His sudden change does not wake up the trust for him inside of my soul. And this is not because he is different but because he was calling for a separation before and he was supporting one nation opposing the other nation before. All that has been changed in him: he just changed the sides. And he still thinks that he is a "selected one" - and again that he is different from the rest of the world. .
From the hating one nation to the loving this nation to the - again - extreme.... no, I do not buy it. Thank you but not! He remains in the same boat for me as he was before as Nazi: as I can see he still can not grasp who he is. We can not divide the world on Nazis and no Nazis, Jews and no Jews, etc etc... It is like dividing the world into smaller groups based on illusion identity - there is not the way of truth. I gave this movie a very low mark only because I felt it was a waste of my time - this politician should certainly first of all learn how define himself as a kind human being - nothing else unless he does not know how to read good philosophy books... But who am I to show him the way - only his heart will show... and this might take many life times indeed.
PERSIAN FILM FESTIVAL: NAHID website review by Elmira Navid
"Nahid" was a woman of constant inconvinience and stress throuout the movie. Sara Bayat as the main actress of the movie is playing a role of divorced woman who is struggling financially and morally in managing her life supporting her son from her past marriage. She is willing to have a relationship with a man, Pezhman Bazeghi, who is very supportive of her, but she has a big concern that she will have her son takenaway by the ex-husband as soon as she sign any marriage certification. The ex-husvabnd is still a big lover and wants her back to his life. There is no sign in Nahid's face and heart to let this happen. There is a big power inside her to refuse the man's propose, and she did refuse multiple times. Pezhman keeps chasing her to hear the 'yes' response from her. He has lost his wife and can ony live with the memory of her, their daughter. Nahid decides to stop the hard life and marry Pezhman. Long very long after the ex-husband finds out about a man existing in Nahid's life. He takes away the son and Nahid couldn't stop him from doing this. Luckily the certificate they signed wasn't a permanent marriage and it was a temporary marriage that could expire in a month. The movie could clearly show the stress and the pressure that Nahid could go through before and after his divorce. I could feel the tension from Nahid's action and I believe she did a great job of acting her role in the movie. It was hard to see how a woman has to go through so many troubles in order to keep being a mother. All she wanted in her life was to raise his son in any circumstances which disabled her from having a quality life. But towards the end of the movie she realized there is much more about life and she decide to stand by Pezhman and create a new life away from all the struggles.
In 70-s and in some countries even now the same sex relationship were and still are not taken as love at all. You can be in love with your dog, your cat or your canary but you can not love some one who looks the same as you. It is upsetting to see the reaction of the villagers when a young females couple ( Carole played by beautiful Cecile De France and Delphine played by Izïa Higelin ) whose chances to meet were close to zero come from Paris back to Delphine's parent's country home. The return is unplanned as Delphine's father had a stroke. She does not have courage to admit her love for Carole but when she does the while household goes upside down and not only the house as the neiboughrs start pointing their fingers at the girls. Will they stay together neglecting negativity coming from the families and friends? Who knows? I loved the acting of both females as well as supporting actors - they are all simply brilliant. I only found the story line to be a bit simple for such a strong cast, but had a great time indeed following the ups and downs of this gorgeous and full chemistry couple.
It is the weirdest film I have ever seen in my life. May be if I was a teenager I would be happy to watch it. But I think even at this age such films were not ion my "best from the west" shelf. There is one positive aspect I found about this movie: the girls play incredibly well - they are both amazing when it comes to acting and I really would like to see them both in the good film about magic. I have no other comments about this movie - there are no good and strong messages in it (only when the girls kill a Hitler-looking-like Nazi). If the movie is about magic and imagination at least it should have a good taste in such aspects of our "un-reality" No comments from me as I might offend people who adore live sausages that look like Hitler and run around you in the zombie-rush... oh yeh, and sh*tty yoga instructors together with Johnny Depp who is completely unrecognisable - apart from that he is a "what the hell are You doing in this???". Well, I might have one word for the whole picture: awful!
LAVAZZA ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: THE SPACE BETWEEN website RATE: 7.5/10
The Space Between is part of the Lavazza Italian Film Festival and has a central place at the upcoming grand event of the year for the whole Italian community and everyone (including is) who adores Italian films from childhood. This particular screening was organised for the media and friends of the film director Ruth Borgobellowho graduate from RMIT University. It was a great pleasure to see how many friends and supporters the young director has; it was also a double pleasure to see the photo from the movie was taken for the cover of this year festival. I also would like to highlight it was a world premiere of the film and I hope it will find its wide audience worldwide - it is perfect for the festival screenings around the world as it captures both Australian and Italian cultures so well. You probably already guessed that the movie has a blend of cultures: Italian and Australian, It is a great debut film for the young directors. I will mention the strong sides and will also touch some doubts. The camera work was absolutely incredible with the breathtaking moments of nature and flowers pictured and some beautiful shots indeed including the urban life of small Italian provincial place Udine ( Northern Italy). It is tender and very sentimental - you feel for the main characters and you sincerely understand what they are going through: their searches, pain and deep feelings. I love Australian actress Maeve Dermody that I noticed in Pawno earlier this year 0 she is fantastic! Alex really loved her as well. She has got a bright career in front of her. She plays with a mixture of Australian and European charm and will be excellent for showing different characters: she is like a good diamond : so to speak a multi-level actress with many nice and mysterious sides she still does not know herself. The film has some funny moments which were cute and very well played! OK, now the not so good notes. There is was too many scenes with the cigarettes: practically every episode either finishes or starts with the smoking people. For me, not-smoker it was a bit of an unpleasant surprise, but even Alex who smokes was shocked and found it absolutely unneeded unless... well.. We also both agreed that Flavio Parenti has not done it to the perfection, not the smoking (oh well) but the acting was weak and too plain to our taste to be honest. Hardly can see the guy being successful on his way... and felt very sorry for the choice of the actor. Although he was good in some episodes he failed in some too - would say his part was not that smoothly performed - unless he works more and more on his characters it will be hard to see him in something of this caliber (and the director's expectations were definitely very high). We also found the story line was a bit "un-even" / uncertain,.. well... not that strong, but for the first film/debut it was absolutely excellent indeed .But we saw a very solid potential for a great films ahead - it was a fantastic start and we are wishing the director all th best and are expecting new works of course! I am also publishing some photos we snapped from the event that started with some cute treats: cocktails and snacks - that made everyone definitely happy, relaxed and talkative. Just also wanted to thank the organisers for such an great atmosphere they created before the screening...
It is a 10/10 animation that will tick all your boxes: great story line, funny, don to perfection and well pictured and very rich characters, I think when you go to see it with the whole family after it is over you will start waiting for the second part to come. When I was watching the film I could not resist to compare my own puppies behavioral patterns captured so precise the whole cinema was cracking one witty remark after another. It is fun time to spend with the family and friends - you will not regret it! Recommended for all of us who own cats, dogs and other dragons including kids! The best part of the film that I personally thought was very originally done: the ending when suddenly the pet owners' face get revealed and we observe who is crazy about poodles, cats, parrots, even the pet-eagle (Tiberius).
