It is a daring game to play indeed! The long time friends meet for dinner. There is nothing unusual and the conversation is getting boring and loosing its flavour. We only can notice that out of this 7 people gathered at one table (3 couples and one guy who never brings over his partner) , we only notice that one couple is very unhappy. Before attending the dinner they hide their strange and hidden from each activity who knows where: in the bathroom or behind the bedroom doors. Nevertheless our expectations reveal that not only one couple is suffering from lies and infidelity. The very strange game starts at the table in the middle of the dinner just before the desert is served/ They all put their phones on the table openly and will reveal the information from every email, message, text and phone call that is coming through. They will share the nature of the text and the message and explain it in front of everyone. This is when the fun begins and the doors start to slam. To be honest I have not laughed like this fro a long time... They now all know about each other in less than an hour. And when all the cards are open and there is nothing else to say.... the ending will shock you even more... Be prepared to some serious laughs and some very funny drama. Pointless to say the actors are ALL superb. I found only two familiar faces: Giuseppe Battiston (as Peppe) and Alba Rohrwacher (as Bianca) but the rest of the crew is also very appealing and as I mentioned portray their characters immaculately well. My score is 10 and Alex's is 9
The film 'Dancer' captures an exclusive look behind the scenes of the life of famous ballet dancer Sergei Polunin.
In a documentary style the audience is taken on a journey through his childhood years.
One of the main elements explored throughout the film is the involvement of his family throughout his training and career. It was so heartbreaking to hear about the struggles his family endured to get him the best education they could. It shows how his parents and grandparents were all separated in a bid to earn separate incomes in order to fund the opportunities he was given.
The behind the scenes look as a family is inspiring yet sad at the same time because whilst you see Sergei in his prime performing the audience learn a secret about the shocking effect money had on his family and them being able to enjoy his success.
The journey Sergei takes from child prodigy to famous performer is explored thoroughly. There are interviews throughout the film with friends, family and colleagues from his journey including Sergei himself.
I would recommend this film for anyone who has had a dream to be the best version of themselves. it is also a film that makes you question your own morals and happiness as did Sergei in the past couple years of his career. It really captures the highs and lows of a career in the ballet industry.
If you are expecting a documentary like any other you will be refreshingly surprised. It will make you think for sure.
UNDERWORLD BLOOD WARS NEW website review by Bryanna Reynolds
If you are looking for your next vampire horror obsession, this one is for you!
'Bloodwars' is the 5th instalment in the Underworld franchise and it did not disappoint.
You may be wondering, does this mean I have to watch all the films to be able to understand what is going on? I have not seen any of the films in the franchise series and 'Bloodwars' absolutely blew my mind. I only wish I had discovered it sooner. Imagine a film that is a combination of Twilight, Harry Potter and Fifty Shades of Grey with a touch of Tim Burton ish overall feeling. It is definitely on the darker side of the spectrum when it comes to action, violence and gore. Did I mention the series is about covens of different vampires?
One of the things about the film that really blew me away was the covens style and the look of the film as a whole. Each coven had a specific dress sense and style of fashion. It made it extremely easy to tell who was a part of what coven. There was a lot of black throughout the film and it is stunningly powerful.
All the characters were so strong and relatable but at the same time you had to pinch yourself and remember that they were fiction (sad face).
If you are looking to sit down and get lost in an alternate universe where fantasy meets fiction than this film is for you.
I cannot wait to watch the previous films that have been released in the franchise. Do yourself a favour and make sure you check it out on the big screen at the cinema, you won't regret it.
MONSIEUR MAYONNAISE NEW website review by Mahsan Ahmadi
It was so great to watch a documentary movie; the kind I've never experienced before. It just drawn my mind to imagine what's Europe like now in comparison to 40s and 50s. The man who was talking about his primogenitors has done a very astonishing job during making that documentary. He has illustrated all his imagination of his ancestors in picture of very funny modern childish paintings. By means of those paintings, you get into his family story. Furthermore, he was traveling beyond the Europe, to see where his dad bought baguette or which restaurant has sandwich with pile of mayonnaise. That was so interesting to see the ancients' life style, the way of cooking and the designs. They all gave me a very broad perspective of passed life; especially about the times of second world war. If you like something unusual with historical and biography twist this is the film for you!
JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2016 CLOSING NIGHT SELECTION: THE LONG EXCUSE NEW 永い言い訳 website review by Jeanette Russell
Thank you for the opportunity to review this film from Miwa Nishikawa who wrote and directed it. It was a treat to see it at the Japanese film festival with a great atmosphere, and interviews with Miwa and the lead actor Masahiro Motoki at the film's end. They story is intriguing, based on Masahiro's character Sachio who loses his wife in a coach accident. His wife ( Natsuko ) was on her way to a holiday destination with her best friend (Yuki ) who was also married. The two widowers are substantially different in expressing their grief over losing their partners. Sachio who it seems was not committed to his marriage, does not even cry or express sadness when he receives the news of his wife's death. He had a mistress who he was with as soon as Natsuko left for the trip. Yuki's husband ( Yoichi ) however is poles apart from Sachio . Yoichi is visibly heartbroken, and in the grips of deep despair, over the loss of his wife. The two widowers meet up. Sachio had no children, but Yoichi has two. A twist and surprising event is that Sachio offers to look after the children for Yoichi while he is on the road driving, for his job. Often portrayed as very insensitive and self serving , we see a much softer humane side of Sachio as he cares for the children. It is moving to view his personal growth, while he is connecting and engaging with Yoichi's children. A film of contrasts parallels and human's raw emotions, I found it fascinating to observe the journey's of these two men. Yoichi's children Shinpei ( his son at late primary school ) and daughter Akari ( who is at preschool )in the story, are delightful. The actors mostly newcomers to acting did a wonderful job of portraying these characters very realistically and genuinely in pain, grieving and suffering over the losses of their mother's and wive's. Personally I found that the movie to spark my curiousity. To me it was stirring and definitely held my attention. For my score I would like to give the film 4 out of 5. A very enjoyable and interesting evening. Following the movie was an insightful chat with Miwa Nishikawa and Masahiro Motoki . We had the Q and A interpreted for us, into English as the interviewees spoke Japanese. Miwa informed us that the idea of the story came to her as a result of the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami which claimed about 16,000 lives. Her writing depicts the difficulties and mourning of survivors after losses of loved ones. She wanted to portray the suffering and the challenges of carrying on after the deaths of significant others. Another aspect to her script at the time was an inclusion of losing someone but the feelings that come with not parting well. A theme also for Nishikawa was that anything or anyone can just suddenly perish from existence. She also wanted to convey that humans often have to cope with death and parting. The main character was strong and narcissistic. He was also painted as a bit twisted and a man who couldn't express emotion easily at all. Miwa felt there can be elements of this in her own personality. Masahiro Motoki who played Sachio said in his Q and A that he finds that he can relate to Sachio as well. Nishikawa spoke about wanting to put across how the two men are different but can interact. She wanted to display their relationship with each other, and the children. Really enjoyed the movie and I found the Q and A session very informative as well as intuitive. A great final film for the Japanese Film Festival 2016 . (Melbourne)
MONSTER FILM FESTIVAL 2016: RAW NEW website review by Mahsan Ahmadi
As far as my mind helps, all blood comes to my mind. This was the most horrible movie I've ever watched in my life. At the very beginning of the film, I presumed the story would twist interestingly. As the plot develops and further time went, the more disgusting scenes came up on surface. There were as much as unpleasant episodes and sound you can imagine were included on Raw movie. To me, I rarely can consider it as a horror movie, but just call it a rubbish. In comparison to horror, it had nothing to make audience scared or give them a bit of heart beating rather than vomiting. Those obnoxious scenes just gave me unpleasant feeling of hostility. If there is only a movie in the world NOT to recommend any one to watch, that would be the "RAW" . What kind of people seat and see a girl having sex with a corpse in a morgue! 2 sisters bite each other's necks to get blood! Who enjoys seeing a cut tongue in a boy's mouth because of a french kiss by a girl?! Who appreciates the moment watching a sister eating her sister's cut off finger !> I imagine that would be only very sicj people. This kind of move has never been my cup of tea, but as a change in my taste I just wanted to give it a go! As a result, I'm just more than before determined to my taste and choice not to see this kind of movies ever again! It just ruined my couple of days; specially that night when I was leaving the cinema by vomiting when 2 sisters starting to suck each others' blood and kiss and... by those disgusting noises!
I simply do not understand what people can learn from such films? They are not event entertaining! I have to admit I experienced soe very unpleasant moments that night in the cinema! My recommendation: don't go and see this!
MONSTER FILM FESTIVAL 2016: THE GREASY STRANGLER NEW website review by Mahsan Ahmadi
To be honest I was expecting to watch a bit different movie at the closing night of Monster Film Fest to watch . It was not only a very shallow movie, but also was total rubbish. I also understand that the genre of horror has some consequenses: there should be horrors. But I also believe that there are well done "horror" and very poorly done "horror". To add to that when people come to see a movie (which is art I believe) it means that they are expecting at least some enjoyable moments which can be produced by certain feelings when you reflect on the film: excitement, fear, love or learning something from that movie. I am just wondering to know what was the aim of the director and writer of "Greasy Strangler"? I personally see it as quite feeble, aimless, shallow and mediocre movie with minimal sets and casts. There are outdated clothing and costumes or mostly naked, wooden dialogues made that atrocious shallow movie. I simply do not have enough words of disappointment. It wasn't absolutely clear what was the aim! A father cheating on his son!? Oh! God! Unbelievable! In my opinion, it was just pretty unconvincing also, poorly directed, poorly filmed etc etc and I don't know why I watched it all the way through . I simply should have walked out! It was utter rubbish!
This movie is a live travel to the past - the experience so powerful and so well played - you can only imagine. Made in 1925 its history is incredible as well as the picture itself: "Because the film was produced in Germany, it was not made with the intent to pass the newly established MPPDA's "Hays Code" which had been introduced the year before with hopes of mollifying the more than 100 local and state censorship boards around the United States. These boards quickly took an ax to the film, cutting, on average, enough footage to fill two film reels. New York made the fewest cuts, removing slightly less than one reel of footage." If you ever had a chance to see and fall in love with the silent movies this is a gem for your collection. If you know nothing about this era - take a ride and watch this film for total enjoyment. Some silent movies as a famous singer sang: are so full of sound. The actors perform with an splendid dedication, their emotions are raw and sometimes seemingly naive but I guess this s how people were at this time: sincere and like open books. I was a bit annoyed about the repetitive music but I believe it created an atmosphere of strong emotions to reflect the feelings of the main cast. The restoration process on the film that took place in 2015 allowed to add 30 minutes to the originally released film with quite revealing Variete scenes. You will guess what they were when you see the picture. When you watch the film try not to compare it with anything you saw so far: just open your mind and deep inside the age of 20-s and 30-s bohemian world: love, jealousy, lust and revenge - it is all there in the most genuine form. Please note that this film was officially selected by the Australian critics for the closing night of the German Film Festival 2016.
I loved every moment of this film. Sometimes life and love take such strange turns and shapes! I also was very impressed by the whole crew of actors: I could not understand where have they all learnt how to look after the sheep , how to collect wool and how to manage the large farm? Were they real actors who all had learnt these skills or they are some local New Zealand farmers who are terrific in acting? That was a real puzzle for me. I loved the sound of the language spoken, I loved to watch the traditions of the tribe followed and just to look at those beautiful people was a great experience. I adored the "at the table scenes" and how the whole family was behaving; the union dynamic was splendid -:like an entity , like a whole and balanced beehive: full of honey collecting bees they all knew their places, they all work and support each other... But suddenly that well built structure have come to an end with the array of events that disturbed the union. The times came when the truth of the past came out... the key to open the unknown doors was a young teenage boy , also an intelligent and outspoken part of the Mahana family. It is also a very emotional film so be prepared to survive some "tissue moments"
This is an incredible film story-wise. I did knew nothing about this time of history when Botswana , South Africa and the countries in surrounding region had the most difficult times. I can also see some people who will favor such movies and some who will hate them. A United Kingdom is a very smart title. When I went to see the film I though t it was about Great Britain, and no it is not. It is a Kingdom of Borswana and its kings. One of them a young black and well educated Seretse falls in love with a lovely British woman, Ruth. The true story of their hardship and love is accompanied by real live photography of real people. The story requires a standing ovation as their strong spirit and gentle intention together with their will to help Botswana people helped them to survive and fight for their love and for being together no matter what their families said, no matter what their political advisers said no matter that were very close to die for their believes .Both main actors are sensation to say the least. No, it is not an ordinary love story, no they play the individuals who usually stand out from the crowd (may be that's why they are the chosen kings and queens). If you go and see the film you will find it political but at the same time it is more like a look from the inside out on the political life in both Botswana and Great Britain as a separate countries and about their political affairs in diplomatic relationship between two. Khama is a family that created a generations of intelligent rulers who not only defended the rights of their people but keep the country as one, never dividing it in small kingdoms. I believe our governors will have a long way to learn from the best in history. When I watched the film I could not resist to think that the kings can not marry for love... but apparetnly I was wrong.
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL: SUPERWORLD NEW website review by Nadia Pleshkova
In the drama film "Superworld", an ordinary woman Gabi (Ulrike Beimpold) starts wondering of the meaning and purpose of life, of her whole existence and if it matters to God or anyone. Every day life's routine of getting up for work, cooking, washing, taking care of kids, husband and the house finally takes it's toll for Gabi. She now believes she is being followed... by a voice of God. The voice that asks lots of questions. Listening to it Gabi dares to do something that makes the family feel embarrassed and the small town's community, she lives in, gossip. She dares to do something for herself only to realize that nobody cares where she goes and what she does, for whom and for what but mainly that she cannot be happy. We follow Gabi on her emotional search for superworld finding out that she makes a full turn in her heart of leaving and returning home only, without any doubts, to a new inevitable change. Ulrike Beimpold looks so convincing and carries the whole movie practically herself. The film pictures magnificent views of corn fields and sunny, almost perfect weather, which have a warming and enjoyable effect on the spectator.
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL: NOWITZKI: THE PERFECT SHOT NEW website review by Jessica-Lee Murphy.
Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot: Movie review by Jessica-Lee Murphy.
A German masterpiece set in hustle and bustle of America. When I began watching this movie, I didn’t know what to expect. I was preparing myself for subtitles and German actors, but I was pleasantly surprised in the first few minutes’ right to the end.
What’s the movie all about? It’s about an interesting roller coaster of the life story of Dallas Mavericks stalwart Dirk Nowitzki. This young legend spanned a 17-year career in the NBA and the movie gives an authentic account of the mixture of joys and sorrows it take anyone to achieve success in their field. For me one of the take home lessons of this movie was that success does not come easy. But once there, we are there to enjoy every moment whilst it lasts!
The documentary is very personal and contains genuine and authentic details of Nowitzki and his winning team! The film (distributed by Magnolia Pictures, whose co-owner Mark Cuban also owns the Mavericks and contains personal information about the player, that other filmmakers wouldn’t have been so privileged to receive.
Starting as a skinny, insecure teenager struggling to express himself, the movies depicts the challenges Dirk Nowitzki went through to become one of the league's great stars. So determined to get through the tough times that eventually led to his team winning a championship.
What did I think? Amazing. This is just another display of film craftsmanship what shows how German films have dramatically improved in the last decade. The German movie industry has improved like a good wine. Once upon a time like a sour grape, the German directors and producers are now up there with the best of them….
This documentary took me through the rainbow of our emotions. There were the lows, the highs, and the exiting climax of winning a major championship. This documentary certainly will not disappoint!
MIDDLE SCHOOL: THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE NEW website RATE: 6/10 Rafe Katchadorian is quiet and very imaginative teenager who starts a new school. He is an excellent drawer, his characters turn into cool and funny movies cartoons in a blink of an eye. Rafe is a dreamer also. He can not take his new school's rigid and silly rules that are invented by a principle who is way too manipulative to achieve his own goals. Will Rafe and his friends win the battle and free the school from those who deprive their right for freedom and creativity? Probably yes if he acts the right way. It is also so great to have his mom and his sister on his side. His truth is his power. he also has an unusual friend on his side: the ghost of his brother who passed away recently from cancer. But apart from helpers there are enemies of course: his mom's new boyfriend is one of them. What I loved about this film: the gorgeous anime that gets alive when Rafe wants his heroes to jump out from his album right on the streets or on the school yard. The idea is very simple: the boy and his not so loving teachers. enemies at school and his dreams. I loved the way the old ideas were presented through an extraordinary cartoons - the best part of the film I believe! I also trust the teenagers will adore this film: who does not have a teacher that hates all the pupils in the class? Who does not want to get rid of him?
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: EMERALD GREEN NEW website RATE:5/10
If you have teenage kids this is the film for them to watch and enjoy: it has time travelling, romance, challenges, friendship, evil and gentle, witches and wizards, fights and peaceful life - it has everything the teenage kids love so much. Please be aware though that Emerald Green is the third part of already released two movies. Some of the characters' behavior and episodes assume you saw two first parts and your know exactly what is going on. I recommend to watch the first two films before attending the third one in order not to break the logic. IMHO, the film was a bit too pretentious t be believable. It is not Harry Potter, nor it is Lord Of The Rings where everything seems so real and so fantastically true you feel and know it all happened once somewhere somewhat. This is not the case with this film although I can also see the right audience for it.
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: FUKUSHIMA, MON AMOUR NEW website RATE: 10/10
I will start my review with a small haiku that I have written after watching this film: wind moon tea and me fukushima mon amore sweet kitty sweet dreams I fell in love with the movie the same way I fell in love last year watching lats year Japanese Festival movies via links: Little Forest: Summer/Autumn (2014)and Little Forest: Winter/Spring (2015) I truly believe the German film director, Doris Dörrie of Fukushima understood the Japanese culture in its true core. I have only one word for her art work: magnificent. The subject of her investigation is very complex and heartbreaking: the earthquake of 2011 in the region of Fukushima, Japan. We follow the journey of a young German girl whose wedding ceremony just fell through back in her country. She leaves everything behind and goes on a mission together with a group of circus artists to t he Fukushima: she doe snot know the aim of her trip, she runs away from reality , basically running away from herself, she lost everything there, behind her: her love due to one stupid mistake that should not have taken place anyway. Marie is her name. While on her mission to assist the Japanese people, the survivors who occupied a small refuge camp close to the place where the tragedy took place she bonds with an elderly geisha, Satomi, a woman with not very sweet character. The title is a reference to Alain Resnais's Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) which also deals with the trauma of a nuclear catastrophe, namely the Hiroshima bombing. After reading my small poem as an introduction you might start asking questions: why wind moon and tea? Some objects and events like in Japanese poetry hokku or haiku play a significant role in the movie which seemed to e like a small poem or like a dream itself. There are reasons of each meeting , of each encounter in the movie, like in the poem each word has its place, the movie build the painting one piece of the puzzle after another opening the envelope with the message of truth. The film is in black and white. There is not one tragedy inside the envelope: there are many. You can see in from one old woman perspective: the whole world is opening in front of you. It is mysterious, it is sad, it is colorful, it is covered with dust like a bunch of old photographs found under the ruins of the house. I want to say so much about his film and I will only say a little: the lives of two women after they met each other will be changed forever. they are like small islands of surviving for each other: they heal each other: their first meeting is bitter, their days together under one roof are the days of discoveries and learning about thy-selves and their last meeting is sad. Maria will leave the Fukushima understanding that her mission is that seemed impossible to complete is fulfilled now. Her heart is rejuvenated and rewind like a new clock. Why kitty and why dreams? I can not answer all your questions - you know. You HAVE to go and see this film for yourself to find out. SUPERB! I want to see it again and again! "Only the cup and you - nothing else!"
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL: ORIGINAL BLISS NEW website review by Jennifer Zaman
Original Bliss 6/10 The movie is shrouded in layers of complex emotions. A god-loving woman Helene suffers from chronic insomnia and struggles to lead a life of normalcy. Her already disturbed life is further agonised by the indifference of her husband. In the quest to find answers to her troubled mind, she begins reading a book authored by Mr. Eduard Glukk, in which the author interprets religion in a way that fascinates Helene's thoughts. It's after reading the book that she sleeps soundly after ages. Helene goes all the way to secure an interview with Mr. Glukk with her questions about religion. Until then, Helene assumed that her sleeplessness is an attribution of her loss of God. However, meeting Glukk introduced to her an utterly new self; which she could never conceive about. The story churns out an unexpected twist and Helene feels herself getting attracted to the sex-addict author. In a bid to cure her own issues, she finds herself helping out Glukk curing his. A few confusing turns later, Helene, at last, finds solace in the arms of Eduard Glukk. The story-telling lacks substance and logic and certain parts of the movie demands a little more explanation. The climax is questionable in terms of the description of the protagonist projected at the beginning of the story. Overall, the movie lacks reasoning and screams out for good editing.
When the pensioner Arthur is faced with the bitter truth that his funds will be cancelled due to the bankruptcy of the super fund that was supporting his superannuation income he (perhaps) has only one solution that I personally believe many pensioners will back up: these days: he and his wife, Martha decide to rob the bank. As you know the thread is only this long and can not run forever so do the crimes: sooner or later they all get uncovered.... but... not with only one but with many "buts": what if the police officers are helping you out? what if your friends are supporting your criminal actions? .. what if the detective is stupid?... the questions list can go on and on as it grows so do the funnier and the funnier the movie become. The cast is absolutely superb, the story line seem a bit uneven especially at the end but t gets you where you want it to be! Full stop: cool entertainment with the good and sincere message behind it. One of the best comedies I saw recently on the screen. I loved it and if you have an older parents please take them with you to watch this film: they will totally enjoy it!
If i we were told the move is based on real events we would not believe a word if this "promise". If we were told it is not based on the real events we would say: why bother doing something that is not? There is one, no,actually four words that we left the theater with and as Stanislavski said :I don't believe it! It seemed the movie was made without the much attention to details, without thinking of possibilities, just perhaps hoping that the viewer will be not smart enough to guess that he is given something faulty. Both Brad and Marion are good but one could notice Brad was acting as he was told without thinking and perhaps he did not even enjoy this character. The character seemed a bit small and uninteresting for him plus we never bought the part when when the spies are behaving this way: throwing the chairs around in front of their authorities, no we bought the fact that the husband was assigned to execute his wife. It is never ever done like this in the secret service Add to this the other small details they did not "glue" together right way and oh no... the whole movie looks to you as a big goofy farce (=masquerade) It seemed entertaining and sentimental in some parts but we could not get rid of the thought that it was all made up and everything seemed more like a try-hard-butaforia rather than a genuine picture. I personally respect Brad for his many roles in beautiful films with a great story lines and sensational directing. Recommendation for Brad: not to accept the poor director's work anymore and get the movies that can bring him Oscars not scars. But I know for sure many people will enjoy the film because of the romance. We loved the media screening presentation with the cascading champagne and jazz music at such a lovely location as Crown Melbourne - it was magnificent and expressing our big thank yous to the marketing team!
If you like romantic comedies this is the movie that you will like too! If you like Amelie adventures then this is the film you will adore! It consists of three parts: each part describes one person, one main character. The movie starts with describing a simple family: the son leave in the apartment downstairs, his mom lives in the apartment upstairs. He is not married although he is seeing someone, but the relationship seem very weak. His mom controls his life to the extend that he, Vincent Machot gave up and he does not notice that anymore. One day the accident brings him to the grocery shop where he purchase crabs, the owner serves him at the check-out ; she is a middle age woman , Rosalue Blum; her appearance seem so familiar to Vincent he can not understand why but he starts following her, sneaking here and there: he follows her to her house, to the bar where she relaxes after work, to the church where she sings etc, etc. He seem so strange to us, the viewers of the film we are intrigued and we can never guess why is he doing that. The events develop to the extend and to he situation when the chase is impossible to Vincent and his view of live. Without giving it away I will only tell you: he is shocked and he does not know what to do. The third part is about a young girl. Her name is Aude. She lives in the warehouse together with the street circus performer. Her place is covered by what is left after the animals when they want to use the nature to get rid of the waste in their stomach, she has two female friends. They are young, and full of humor, ideas and energy. Aude is the niece of Rosalie Blum. Her sudden involvement in the story of Vincent chasing her aunt is unavoidable (as per the script of this film!) The more she gets involved the more complex the situation is developing. It grown to the extent when her involvement with the "chase" and mystery is also has to end. If I intrigued you enough you are about to hear the rest of the story. The third and the last part is about Rosalie and her life. This part is called Rosalie. It is sad. She is sad. She is lonely too. But we would like to find out why Vincent is following her at every corner of the city and what she is hiding. We also are about to find out why is she so sad but still full of life, funny ideas and energy too. What is connecting all three people? Why would they meet? What is the reason? The film is light, very rich in the sets for each episode of it. It has a dog that looks like a lion, it has crocodiles, a live lamb and lots of very unusual people. This us mystery - the clue is given only at the very end. It is not given here, in my review. The films Amelie-nian story will bewitch you in you like mysterious stories and puzzles, if you like romantic life and if you like happy ending. It seems unreal in many parts but sometimes your own life seems unreal to you, does not it? I totally loved the movie for its unsaid part that you can imagine, for many hidden messages, for its lightness and for its depth at the same time! It reminded me of the fan of the Asian woman that can tell you a whole story just by small movements...
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: MY BUDDHA IS PUNK NEW website review by Jeanette Russel
Thank you for the opportunity to review this film. The writer, director. producer and cinematographer for this documentary is Andreas Hartmann. Impressed by the film, I felt it to be enlightening, engaging and compelling. The scenery struck me as colourful, and it depicted countryside and city , as well as outlying areas within Myanmar. Kyaw Kyaw is the main character, a young man in the grips of developing a Punk scene in his home land. His mission with his Punk Band ( Rebel Riot ) and working in his community group of "Punks" he calls "Common Street", is to raise awareness of violation of human rights. Along with his company he demonstrates, plays music, and promotes his cause often travelling through the country to put their word out. Kyaw Kyaw's troop has it's own brand that takes some ideals of Buddhism, and throws Punk in the mix. The members fight for the right of personal autonomy, and the importance of freedom, to make choices. They reject political doctrine and religious rules. A magazine was published by the group to express their beliefs. The guys are against the civil war and the targeting of ethnic minorities. Told through the eyes of Kyaw Kyaw, the viewer gets to see the inner workings of the community. I found it to be a story of bravery, individuality, community, personal struggles, as well as a great sense of camaraderie. The doco to me gave a lot of insight into the world of these Punks, who were mainly young men. It was really thought provoking, entertaining and engrossing, I thought. 4 out of 5 is the score I would like to give the film.
Our children are US. We say that the parents and only parents shape their world. Of course there are other influences but parent's word is the strongest and the most powerful. The weight it carries prevails any outsider's opinion no matter how truthful it is. The family truth is the most powerful too. Your reality is sculptured based on your parents' words and actions. Your world gets confused if your parent's word does not match his/her action. The ideal world would be the one where our children assist us in seeing the reality in better light, it would be perfect if we could open our ears and listen to them and learn from them to be lighter, more positive and be in that natural state of mind when we were just born - innocent... We loose on our way; our children make us look at the things in the more honest ways and open our eyes, not only our ears. Unfortunately the material world forces us to be formed in the way where money go before the friendship and good relationship; in reality money define everything. Even who is can be our friend and who can not. Our kids when get open to certain circumstances where money prevail get confused. The do not understand the world anymore. Teenagers are the most fragile. this is the age where the knowledge of the world's basics is received and they feel that they are adults but they are not. The Little Men drama is about two teenage boys worlds: they follow their dreams, they learn, they fall in love. they get rejected, they friend and unfriend, they are full of energy and talents, As their parents get into the argument about money, the boys still try to maintain the friendship; they even maintain silence with their parents in protest to the unusual situation but the circumstances are obviously more powerful and so are their parents. The friendship ends. The movie is very delicate. I loved both characters so beautifully played by the boys - they deserve a standing ovation for their acting. Simply natural, brilliant and honest! Sometimes I think our children play better than us. Our relationship are so miraculous and so fragile even a little comment can brake them forever. One word: cherish while the relationship are there; it is easy to destroy rather then build but what is already built can be destroyed within one day. One word: gorgeous movie!
DOCTOR STRANGE NEW website RATE: 7/5/10 Dear Mr (Dr) Cumberbatch, please (this is a petition from Alex and myself) please please we love you in so many roles: Sherlock being the best (but not the The Abominable Bride of course), The Imitation Game where you were sensational and many others: YOU ARE NOT A SUPERHERO! You simply are not suited for those roles no matter how they try to drag you into them. You are losing your beauty of being an exceptional actor in extraordinary films. Doctor Strange has nothing to do with what everyone talks about this film is: it is not about astral projection, nor it is about the great ideas that seem so fake in this film. It looks like the script writer had a very vague idea about the "magical" things he wants his characters to talk about. I feel ashamed that such great bunch of actors agreed to pronounce these stupid words, juggling them like a cheap magician in front of an ignorant audience. Alex and myself wanted t give this film 4/10 but gave it a higher mark only because of the actors, but not even because that they were suitable for these roles but only because they have names and people will go watch this cr*p only because of the cast without understanding what astral means (the way doctor gets into this state is LO to be honest!), what travelling means and what else Doctor Strange learned in Nepal. The make-up of some actors is ridiculous the extend that we both LOL. But wait!.. How does Dr Strange uses his superpowers after he is full of wisdom and he heals himself? You know, his surname tells you all: STRANGELY and artificially stupid. No wizard and no witch will believe this picture to an inch! I also feel sorry for the teenagers who will become disoriented and fooled and even more ignorant as the film will not teach them anything they did not know before: fighting like in computer games and .... well, there is nothing else there! The image of a superhero made B. Cumberbatch look strange and awful - he could not handle the role and I believe the actor needs to change his agent and to start getting more intelligent roles. My recommendation give it a miss unless you like Dr Cumberbatch so much you feel you will not miss it... as we did!
FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM NEW website RATE: 10/10
When you go to see the movie and someone tells you : "this is the next chapter of Harry Potter", you start thinking: oh, no, not again! not another James-Bond-/Star-Wars- Sherlock-Holmes- Indiana-Jones- -next-movie-failure.It doe snot work this way really - they try too hard but it doe snot work. You feel skeptical but curious.. but wait! The Fantastic Beasts are going to blow your mind away! The adventures will take you to the world you never thought could be made in such way on the screen... but not only the graphics is amazing: it is the story line that is fresh, intelligent and so Breathtaking! You will have no minute of doubt these creature live next t us - it is so real! Please note that this film is not a sequel nor it is prequel of Harry Potter. It is not like an expansion (or extension) on the world of creatures we saw a couple of times appeared in Harry Potter original series. Eddie Redmayne is a rock star in this film: he not only leads but he is so believable you will start looking for him in the crowd next time you go for a walk in the city. J.K. Rowling nae appearing in the titles will reassure you that the final product will be terrific - nothing less only better than before! The direction of David Yates will give you a double credit that you are going to see something extra-ordinary. We watched the film in 2D Geld Class, but I recommend you for this particular film treat yourself generously with 3D and Gold Class - you will not regret but will want to see it twice or more times. We had a group of young girls attending the screening with us and they were screeming in excitement after each gorgeous scene. I believe the cast was fantastic, they played to the perfection and wee all well suited for their cases. A good film should contain a bit of sadness a bit of good humor, a bit of romance and a bit of enemies to battle with. This picture has it all in great balance. We look forward to watching the next one coming up in 2018! Just cant' wait!
MONSTER FILM FESTIVAL: THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE NEW website review by Mahsan Ahmadi
Ding...Ding...Ding....! It's still following me everywhere...!
This sound just gets stuck in my mind and reminds me the spine-tingling ghost story movie "The Autopsy Of Jane Doe". This nail biting movie with just a minimal set but very strong effective sound effects will have you on the edge of your seat. Ding... Ding... Ding...! Coroners Austin and Tony, a father and a son were supposed to autopsy an unidentified young woman who was half-buried under the house where the whole family was killed with unclear reason. As they debut the autopsy, they face some changes which make them frightened. The further they get into the autopsy procedure, the creepier it gets... The plot develops and we are given more and more information.
Under the layers of the corpse beside those broken bones and internal scars some runic symbols can be obviously seen which leads them to find out Jane was an unorthodox woman that takes the other soul to keep being alive.
Ding ding ding - it was one of the corpse from morgue to follow the doctors, to take their lives and to get it to the other corpses.
I really loved the role of the corpse who was obliged to just lie down with no movement.Of course it needs a hard work to just keep still and nice and a hundred percent she practiced many hours on Yoga and some other activities like that to play that amazing role.
So if you want to experience minutes of excitement and fear, I would highly recommend you to watch this horror movie to scare you out of your wits.
"Seven" is a thriller to keep you transfixed, fascinate and disturb at the same time from the start. Taking place in the unknown town, two detectives partner to investigate the murders. One, who has experience of it all and the other green and ambitious. Morgan Freeman usually plays strong and authoritive characters and so in Seven he does it simply naturally. When realising the killings connect to seven deadly sins, the old detective resigns in the library to consider the killer's moral statements through studying about the sins. While Brad Pitt's character chooses to go into the murder's mind to try to think like him. The whole movie is done in a perfect noir style expressing nothing but fatalism and menace. The killer, played by Kevin Spacey, exposes himself 30 minutes before the movie finishes and completely dominates it since then. The actor hasn't failed a bit to portray the most Evil using his face, voice and composer of a true phycopath. The culmination of the most horrific, disturbing and totally unexpected scene comes towards the end of this film, which probably makes it a classic thriller of our times.
BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK NEW website RATE:8.5/10
Wars are created so we can kill the other people who do not want peace. Peace is created by killing people who do not correspond with our understanding of world. The less we have of those people the more peace we will have... Does it sound stupid enough to you?..
Who is Billy Lynn? Billy is a soldier. He is not an ordinary soldier. Billy is a hero. He killed people. He saved lives of his co-troopers. He saved our lives. He fought in Iraq. He fought for oil. He killed for people better regime in the country. he was hated by Iraqians. He survived where normal people would loose their minds. He knows the art of killing because he was taught how to do it right. He is loved by best girl because girls love heroes. they do not like when the heroes get tired and get retired. they will never date no-hero. Women like to be seen with close heroes especially to war heroes. It gives him even more security.
What is Halftime Walk? I found out for myself that this is an interruption between the two parts of the rugby game in America when entertainment takes place. The entertainment is a blast: the one superstar changes the other. Beoynce is a superstar. She stands close to the heroes. That make the stars the heroes too. That makes the heroes the stars. The heroes and the stars walk at the break of the game to the stage and create a live show with Beoynce in her song about the soldiers in front of the 10,000 stadium where people pay thousands of dollars only to have the right to buy tickets .
Why the walk is so long? - the song is only 3-4 minutes. Billy lives his own live during this walk, during this show. he has his own show in his mind. He sees war, he sees his mother home in Texas. He sees his family and he sees the battles in Iraq. She show goes on. Billy finds himself between the two worlds: between the war and between the peaceful life in America. Billy's psychological crisis is strange to us as we do not know much about the traumas and tragedies all soldiers go through at the wars. At the same time we understand why Billy is like this. Civilians do not know what their "heroes" g through at the battling fields.
The film is powerful enough for you to break into tears in the middle of it. I could not keep the tears because of the feelings of being powerless to change anything in this world because of the world's stupidity, blindness and vulnerability.
Joe Alwyn (Billy) is maginifent is this role, his "hero" is defenseless when the feelings take him by his hand, he is not weak but he is a human being, he opens up in front of us to the point when we can see and feel his soul and what he is going through. After the horrors f the war Billy faced his Bravo Squad victory tour across America feels as empty and pointless as the rugby game cheap show itself.
I trust the movie will be quoted and these quotes will be memorized by the viewers. The actors are very good but not brilliant except Joe. Perfect movie and well delivered ideas.
ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY: KING LEAR NEW website RATE: 9/10
We all read Shakespeare's timeless story that is still sound so modern even with 400 passed. King Lear is ageless classic that will never vanish as never vanish the father and daughter relationship. The world develops and grows but the issues are still the same: we are betrayed by our children and we are loved unconditionally by our children. But the story is well known for me just wasting my time to retell it. We all read it at school many years ago. The Royal Shakespeare Company surprises by staging solutions, by characters' growth and selection and by the interpretation where we see King Lear more mad than tragic, his younger daughter more gentle and tender in her love to her father than sad in her feelings about his wrong decisions. It is different from what we used to see though it is a pleasant and it is deep and so very well done by the actors' crew. I loved the comments on the costumes and showing the audience behind the scenes and how the dresses are made and what the purpose of each is. It is much more complicated that we think... The theater production is a must to see indeed!
I you love cartoons this is the anime you will adore, If you love Japanese cartoons this is the one to fall in love with... If you love incredibly good Japanese cartoons then this is the one you will not want to miss! It is delicate, it is so well filmed I could not understand how it was done - to show the small dust particles and camera sun-spot reflections as if it was all captured on real camera - I HAVE NO WORDS how technically and artistically good this anime is - to be honest I have not seen anything like this in my life. The idea of the story is strange though: a young big city boy and a young country girl "swap" their bodies while they day or night dreaming... they have never met before ... and they try to find each other in real life. The film is fine and delicate like a ilk pattern made with love and care.
QUOTES: Hitoha Miyamizu: Treasure the experience. Dreams fade away after you wake up.
Mitsuha Miyamizu: Musubi? Hitoha Miyamizu: Miyamizu: Musubi is the old way of calling the local guardian god. This word has profound meaning. Typing thread is Musubi. Connecting people is Musubi. The flow of time is Musubi. These are all the god's power. So the braided cords that we make are the god's art and represent the flow of time itself. They converge and take shape. They twist, tangle, sometimes unravel, break, and then connect again. Musubi - knotting. That's time.
Katsuhiko Teshigawara: It's the oldest sake in the world. By chewing on rice, spitting it out, and letting it ferment, it becomes alcohol. Sayaka Natori: Kuchikamisake. Do the gods appreciate sake made that way? Katsuhiko Teshigawara: Of course they do.
Mitsuha Miyamizu: There's no way we could meet. But one thing is certain. If we see each other, we'll know. That you were the one who was inside me. That I was the one who was inside you.
It is a film about love and friendship, teenagers and magic. It is full of humor and adventure, hope and self discovery. At some stages the anime was so fabulous I forgot I was watching the anime not the real film captured the reality on camera.
The soundtrack was incredibly gorgeous too. I also believe that lots of the film subtitles got lost in translation and there was much more in the text than we could read and understand. At this moment I thought I should have learnt Japanese.
One word about his animation: it is phenomenal!
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: HODUR NEW website review by Jeanette Russel
Hordur is a film from the German film festival. It was a heartwarming story of a 17 yr old girl named Aylin . Hordur is a beautiful stallion who is on a farm where Aylin is to do community service. She finds herself, as ordered by the court, working at a horse stable, where she meets Hordur. Aylin is clearly moved by this horse and becomes bonded with him. Learning to ride she is keen to be able to ride Hordur and eventually enter into an event with him. Even her school life becomes better settling things at school. Before this her sentence to community service, was as a result of trouble at school. Delightful story mainly told through the eyes of this young girl, and her battles at school and at home after losing her mother when she was 16. Beautiful scenery, in the countryside, and other scenery depicting her and her families life challenges. An enlightening film, I found, about Aylin's journey, and despite many trails, discovering her talents and joys in her life. I felt the film was well made. It was directed by Ekrem Ergun who also did the screenplay and is well worth watching. Entertaining and thought provoking, I found it to be engaging to watch. Giving the film 4 out of 5 I highly recommend seeing it. Thank you for the opportunity to review this film. It was my pleasure to view it.
RUSSIAN RESURRECTION FILM FESTIVAL 2016 OPENING NIGHT: THE STUDENT NEW website RATE: 7.5/10
The film of dir. Serebrannikov is scary and very complex to say the least. It is the selection of t he opening night for the RRFF2016 which was a bit of a harsh choice IMHO. The reality of the modern Russia is shown in its best. Through the character of the main hero, Venya Yuzhin the director shown the social crisis and the inability of the different social groups and institutions to resolve it. We follow Venya and his strange journey and his search for truth. Vnya is not a common boy, his sick attraction to religion sounds like a warning at the start and as a cry for help at the end of the movie. Venya uses the Bible as his book of living, he breathes the Bible and he follows its teaching. But his theoretical knowledge does not apply to real life that challenges him at its every corner: for example the girl that chases him (the episode with the kiss) and the episode with food sharing at the table when his mom gives all they have to him and his friend and Venya does not even have a second thought that he probably should share his food with his mom. More to that the inability to apply The Bible to life makes him aggressive to the point when the act of killing is no more a problem. Venya does not see anyone else around him, he is the central figure - there is only him and him in this world, nor he cares about the feelings of the others. Venya's family situation is not the best you can wish for anyone - his father left the family and he is raised by his mother who is inconsistent in her demands to her son. Venya's father is God. But God is no beter that his father. Nothing works Venya's way. Venya turns into a teenager who will destroy anything on his way , anything that does not work his, Venya's way. He destroys though weak and vulnerable being weak and vulnerable himself. Venya's obsession with God turns into almost a schizophrenia; there are some episodes that are too painful to watch. Now no one understand him: not his crying mother, not the pope, not the school psychologist, not his friends and those who seem to understand him ultimately want something from him. I really loved the actors selected although Venya seemed sometimes not believing what he was saying and playing a bit weaker than demanded from his character. The best actress IMHO was Venya's psychologist, a very powerful role that was performed with perfection. The film seem not to have any way out of the tunnel of the problems raised: the director of the school simply walks away from the final scene and slams the door, the pope seeks solution in the features of the church but not in the true words and philosophy, Venya's mom is hopeless beyond any understanding, Venya's psychologist is sacked from school and goes mad herself, instead of helping each other people leave each other in the most terrible situations. There is not even one positive character shown in the film. The disabled homosexual Venya;s friend , who is the only light in this darkness has to go as he knows way too many secrets now. The hope is lost and the tomorrow is never shown in this film - there are only ghosts left in the school's empty halls who talk... but who will listen to them? None of the systems seem working for raising the best and healthiest generation: the church fails, the schools fails so does the family. If you are up for entertainment in this movie be reassured - you will not find it!
The Founder is an extraordinary film about the founder of Mc Donald's chain of restaurants, Ray Croc, The film that contains the information that Ray (if he was alive) would never allow to put in in his biography film. Although it does not show Ray from his best side the movie reveals to us the secrets how the big money are made. When a new business is open by a 52 year old man the result matters more than the ways the money are made: there are no honesty, there are no dignity and there is nothing that will stop the person who has the aim and who does everything possible to achieve it. The best scene in the movie: when Ray feels and he knows he wants and has everything in this world - not only the money but the gorgeous girl does and it not matter whose wife she is now and he plays the piano with her - the epic episode indeed to see a dry character and a cold blood businessman who is seduced and loves it being done to him. As you may know the screenplay for this film was featured in the 2014 Blacklist; a list of the "most liked" unmade scripts of the year. You will understand why when you see it.
Robert Frank: Don't Blink is a phenomenal documentary about a revolutionary photographer from NY Robert Frank and his life artistic journey. His surreal views are still under study of the photography experts. He snaps everywhere he goes, he surprises with his world vision to say least. The film talks about his life rocky roads and hardships at the times when people simply do not survive the stress, but Robert works and he hides his pain under the wing of the art. If you are fond of photography in its most artistic expressions you will love the film - as I did 100%
WHO'S JENNA..? NEW review by Mahsan Ahmadi
If you were away from comedy films for a while, I highly recommend you to watch "Who Is Jenna?" As it starts with very ridiculous sexy conversation between couples, it motivates you to keep watching it in excitement. Jonathan, the main character of the movie is dating a girl who looks quite similar to a very famous adult film star and his friends are trying to convince him to break up with her because they all already know her as a how can I softly put it: b*tch. But Jonathan is entirely in love with his girlfriend indeed. Jenna is a lawyer and she is trustworthy. Jonathan is always doubtful what to do with his relationship while his boss in black mailing him. The man who works with Jonathan had a adult film-making company and Jonathan's friend who is a real expert in such movies comments: "Your movies are great; it's not only f"ing they're like Sheiks pier F*ing" Good to mention that, although the movie is mostly related to adult film subject there is not one single episode in it which can make your face blush which is an advantage watching the movie like this in the family; just laughing and enjoying together. I found it quite funny and very entertaining to watch.
THE MET OPERA: TRISTAN UND ISOLDE NEW website review by Nadia Pleshkova
For opera lovers and particularly the powerful Richard Wagner, "Tristan und Isolde" is a must to see and listen. It is his short opera with length of over four hours, compared to the longest ever "Ring Cycle" one of 18 hours in length. Wagner himself called his "Tristan und Isolde" the best of his operas. Influenced by Celtic legend, the tale made its way to our modern times from the 12th century and the emotions reflected in music considered to be the personal experience of Wagner in love suffering with impossible progress after all. Thus, the personal experience prompted the search for musical and emotional expression of the love that was untrammeled by social standards. The story narrates the idea of romantic love between the Cornish night and hero Tristan and a beautiful Irish princess Isolde. Wagner creates the great mix of drama, poetry and the tonality in music that makes the whole composition simply sensual, spiritual, erotic and intelligent. The music seem to take you out of this place into the space where no time exists. Perhaps because of this effect as well as the use of non standard, brand new combination of the notes in the chord titles "Tristan und Isolde" as the most influential and powerful opera of all times. Live in HV production is made possible by a generous grant from The Neubauer Family Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies. It was a debut by Stuart Skelton, who absolutely loved working with Nina Stemme, playing Isolde. The interviews after or before each acts were fascinating and very educational too. Brilliant voices. I loved them:) I thought they matched each other really well from voices point of view as well as physically.
The film is all about Ella Havelka, the first Indigenous at the Australian Ballet. We follow together with Ella her daily training, her stage performances at the Bangarra Dancing Troupe and the Australian Ballet, her family (mother) and her friends, her early years of work and her progress, her teachers and her interests, her tours together with the classical ballet group and her individual work on her own creations and much more. I really enjoyed the film. It is calm and not pretentious, it is very educating for the young beginners of dancing schools and it is also shows a bit of history of the ballet as an art. The best part IMHO was the basket making. I loved Ella's genuine and kind smile above all in this film - you reflect on Ella's journey and understand her soul. It is a beautifully done film.
JEWISH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: THE PICKLE RECIPE NEW website RATE: 6/10
This is the strangest film I have ever seen: it is funny and entertaining but the pace changes every 5 minutes. In some parts it is so unforgivably slow and so predictable ad boring you want to die but at some parts you literally fall down from your chair laughing. The actors' performance is also very uneven: Alex and I could notice what parts the actors did not like and what parts they enjoyed playing. But overall acting was quite poor: I would only praise the performance of the youngest in the crew: Taylor Groothuis and sensational Lynn Cohen who were both a head above the rest of the crew. But even their brilliant acts could not save it. At the very start I was close to give this film 4.10 but as the plot developed my stars raised. Overall it is fun to watch but would not be on my priority list of the JIFF that has so many outstanding titles on show this year (I blame Alex for this selection of course :o) ) By the way, the tickets were almost sold for this film... and selling out very fast for te other movies at the festival. I recommend to buy them before they run out of seats for the best movies. There is one more thing I forgot to mention: I could not help but compare this film with Woody Allen's movies and thought how HE would do this or that episode. Woody won of course.
I like strange behaving people. I love what the family did in the movie too as we did very similar things when our kids were young: appearing in front of our friend's house with two violins, paying and begging them for money, cross dressing, popping to our friend's place and mowing their front lawn at 0600am in the morning and then sending them the bill for this work etc etc. Our fantasy was endless.... I was thinking that the movie could have been done 100 tomes better, funnier etc etc... It got such a rewarding subject but it snapped sometime in the middle somehow and it went down and down... I do not want such stories to end - they are so full of fantasy and wild imagination - I would not call it art though - it might be a game of reality but it is not art. You do not record these stories, you just remember them. We seem to be more boring these days but I can imagine that as in the movie our kids would not accept our "crazy" ideas anymore. They grew up from this but hopefully they will find the partners who will share they values too and will have a fun life. If you asking me if the star-sparkling cast made this film better for me? Perhaps - but just a bit ... In the good movie everything is important : the cast, the story line , the pace, the camera, the music etc etc... It all adds up and shapes. This film for some reason did not resonate in my soul although had everything done right except the connection to the audience... I will leave it for our readers to figure out what was missing...
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL: HER COMPOSITION NEW website review by Nadia Pleshkova
"Her Composition" is the movie about Malorie, a talented music composition student in the most prestigious college one can dream of, who doesn't meet the deadline to pass her exams. She looses the scholarship and her boyfriend at the same time to face the struggles of surviving on a student's loan as well as finding an inspiration to compose. Just like a New York's subway with all its various directions, we follow Malorie's mind map for her inspirations for texture, sound and volume for her own composition. Through awakening to the reality of her present situation and finding the inspiration in the list of the most unusual sort - the list of the clients of a former escort girl, Malorie starts forming her special piece. What music would she write? Would she find her confidence? Would she prove to herself that perhaps it is a feminine as a force has always been dominating and not dominated as a transverse of any creation? Uncertainty and unknownness of the answers is gripping a spectator's attention till the very end of the movie.
SUBURBAN COWBOY NEW website review by Mahsan Ahmadi
Suburban Cowboy is a tough movie based on real events. The drug dealer on Long Island USA finds himself in troubles when one of his men got involved with some cruel Serbian gangsters. When the expenses have to be paid s he is forced to take extreme actions to get out of the situation.
Furthermore, a love story was embedded in this film story line as well to show how love empowers a person in tough situation;.the plot twists in this film will have you on the edge of your seat with just minimal set but very interesting sound effects.
The outstanding movie Mommy's box is about the guy who is remembering his childhood and what his mother was doing at that time. Greenlaw takes on the lead role of New York music producer Nick who is battling his own demons and he finds out about the details about his unstable mom's death. When Nick returns to his Long Island home for the mom's wake, many of the family secrets unfold, and they intertwine well with the different story-lines. The film lives up to its tag-line where "the past is never where you go".
NATIONAL THEATER LIVE: THE THREEPENNY OPERA website RATE: 7/10
I heard this opera for hundreds of times since my very early childhood. The main theme of the music is so recognisable it became a musical postcard of German entertainment. Bertolt Brecht and his masterpiece were haunting me for years and I really was looking forward to listening to this particular production of the famous sensation of the last century. I found lots of genius solutions in staging , in acting and in interpreting the german post war gem. Some parts were very with and very smart too. The voices of the singers were absolutely amazing. But for some reason in the middle of the performance I realised I did not care much about the underworld and it's cheap busy days. For some reason I (and Alex) got completely disengaged from the story line, More to that some parts of the opera started to seem falling down or done way too plain to our liking. We could not figure out if it was the "thing" of this particular production or the opera itself/ As you all remember the history it was created in order to attract the crowds to watch the high art like they watch the football matches. That was one of the reasons I believe as the music was at parts seemingly primitive and the production followed. I can certainly see that the genius music can be based on even describing the low-life - there is no doubt about that. As we gave 10 / 10 for the best parts of the opera and 5 //10 for the plain parts the total mark turned to stay 7/10. Let's say it is 50:50 o our liking and it might be different for yours.
THE FENCER NOMINATED FOR THE TITLE OF THE BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH website RATE: 10/10
I loved this film for its sincerity, for organic natural colors, for true feelings showed, for the ability of a man to stand for his values and for his dignity, for his truth in front of the danger; for many beautiful and very pure faces filmed. I loved this film for its story truth and I was shocked that this was an actually true story indeed; t is still continues as it is seen from the final titles. I loved the actors' performance: all so open and so deep and touching. I did not like of course that film got political in many episodes but guess it was unavoidable. I also think the time was depicted very honestly. I could not help myself to admire this sport that is so elegant, so romantic, so musketeer and so ancient. There is also a historical value in this picture of course portraying the times of difficulty of many nations under the cruel ruler. Just one beautiful and very romantic film for you to watch! Highly recommended!
When you hear the title The Accountant you perhaps realise that the film is not about the accounting or perhaps it is only partially about the accounting but the rest should be extremely entertaining.... well, and you will e absolutely right. Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a genius when it comes to accounting; he is the best of the crop; he is autistic. He had a very tough childhood, he spent some years in jail and after he got out he started working for large companies inventing the tricks for them to avoid high taxes. He earned a fortune too but lived a humble life... well till he got focused on one particular case following 15 years of papers at one IT company where one of the two partners got suspicious about the illegal actions of the other partner. As Chris was a step close to the resolving the case of 62 million dollars disappearing from the company the things suddenly got very unpredictable for all the parties. The autistic person is played to perfection; all the other characters ate very convincing too and played very well. Although I caught myself on comparing this film with War Dogs and it lost in intensity and audience engagement but only few points though. This film is not only very entertaining to watch but it is also very intelligently done: it is witty and unpredictable - you will have fun no matter if you like or dislike action thrillers.
Every tribe has a history. Every tribe has rises and downs and the tribe of Varosha is facing the end of the world they live in. Set up at night, the sci- fi movie "Pandorica" has a very simple plot- leadership. Three youngsters, chosen by the tribe, are brought to the mystical forest in order to embark on, undoubtedly, a dangerous adventure to prove to be worthy to become a new leader. What challenges would they face? Would they stay together or fall against each other? Earning the status of a leader brings an unexpected turn for everyone involved. The various music with its dramatic notes add to the harsh decision making of the protagonists. The director Tom Paton investigates the dynamic of a group situation and makes it fascinating experience of a low budget movie.
The film Krampus is an excellent depiction of a horror film fanatics worst holiday nightmare or reality depending on how you look at it.
Being someone who is obssesed with all kinds of horror/suspense films I was so exited to see this film. I am happy to tell you that it lived up to the expectation of a Christmas nightmare.
The story revolves around a Christmas holiday in which nothing goes to plan. What ends up happening though is the opposite of a christmas miracle. Instead of receiving a visit from Santa Claus there is another much wickeder creature that is summoned to a family home.
I was so impressed with the artistic style throughout the film. Special applause to the prop makers/digital artist for creating such a creature feel so real and life like. I don't think I can think of christmas in the same spirit. But don't worry, It won't put you off celebrating your christmas spirit. At least not for a while. All in all it is a fabulous movie that lets you escape to another time and place.
The film had some of my favourite actors of all time including aussie actress Toni Collette. Her performance is memorable and it is always great to see aussie talent in hollywood movies. Other notable performance's were from Adam Scott and Conchata Ferrell. This is definitely a horror film with a lot of big hollywood names involved. Generally I like watching films with unknown actors as it adds to the mystery but I think in this case it was perfection.
I would recommend this film to any horror film fanatics especially if you love films surrounding summoning spirits and creatures.
The main purpose of the movie is to illustrate the social harms while a deep love story is embedded into the story line too, to show how true love can impact on people and change their lives' direction. On the other hand,American Honey is portraying the freedom among teenagers in the US and their efforts to survive. We can observe this while the group of tourist students is traveling through different states to sell the magazines in order to earn money and mae it. The movie was unanimously acclaimed phenomenally successful.
Neon Bull film feels like sneaking after someone's life: the rodeo workers in North-East of Brazil at work. It feels a little bit like a documentary but it is not. You watch the animals being fed, cleaned, looked after, ridden, got into herds, driven from one place to another, being under all sort of preparations, resting etc etc. This work requires from people who look after horses and bulls to be fit and strong. The relationship between people change as the dynamics in the group who looks after the stock and the horses changes. One person leaves, one more joins in. There some beautiful nature shoots there are some exquisite artistic animals shoots and there are interactions between animals and people. If you want to call these people cowboys you probably can but the word does not describe it the way as we know American cowboys - it is a bit different. the movie is very good and very unusual - you might find it even strange at some moments. My recommendation is when you go to watch it: open your mind and you will enjoy it even more: the man's naked bodies, very finely shaped women, stunning horses and dusty white bulls that glow in the dark on the rodeo fields. The shooting is spectacular in some of the episodes. You literally smell the earth there as the film is so close to the land, to the humble and penny-less but very gorgeous and handsome people who live there. I have no idea actually if the film was done with real actors or it was picturing the locals -it is magnificent one way or another. As I said it felt like I was on the other planet watching some one else's lives passing by, someone's drew materialised on the screen.
IRANIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: LIFE AND A DAY website RATE: 7/10
It was probably one of those moments when I after watching the movie stood up from the cinema chair and said: Kill me if I understood anything" but... if some of you will find lots of unknown in the other culture we found lots of new things that we learnt. Yes,it is strange to watch the film and realise that you do not understand half of the language lost in translation : especially the good jokes, but it is good to watch and study something that you have not experienced before. The director's work is amazing and the actors are simply superb and play so naturally. It was hard to understand the nature of some dialogues especially when the arguments between the two brothers started. Each family is cray and dis-functional in its own ways... some families have their own black sheep and there is also a smart guy, the smartest in the family too bad he is still small. The film is honest and strips out the plugs of the society: poverty with hits ugly face, cruelty to each other, love and care on the other side, bad habits and jealousy and fear. It is a superb film to watch if you would like to know more about Iranian culture and traditions.
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS NOMINATED THE BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH website RATE: 10/10
The director of Nocturnal Animals Tom Ford wrote: "Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think there needs to be - I don't really like the word moral - a moral to the story. You need to think about it. Things can be entertaining, but if you leave the theater and it doesn't stay with you, doesn't haunt you, doesn't challenge you, then it's not successful, for me. So I hope to make films that make one think. " This film haunts me for the last two days non-stop: I thought if I tell the story to my husband I will stop thinking about it - no way! The episodes flash back one after another in my memory like the past haunting Amy Adams who plays the main character, Susan Morrow, who left her husband with the bitter words telling him that he is weak and can not support his family the way she pictures it. She regrets every word she pronounced in his face when after years of separation he sends her his manuscript,a novel called Nocturnal Animals that she having started reading can not put aside .Susan suddenly realises that she has done the biggest mistake and most unforgivable in her life. The story line is simple: it is so common nowadays that man can not perform their family duties to the liking of a woman and the women turn into ever unhappy creatures. But the movie is to its story it is so much more to the movie as we know it. You basically find yourself in the middle of three stories running in parallel:Susan current seemingly successful life as an owner, a talented artist and an art curator of a large, contemporary and most prestigious gallery in LA. The second story is the story within the story: it is the book that Susan reads that reveals page after page the thrilling seek of the revenge of a husband who lost his wife and his daughter to the criminal, brutal and cruel gang that operated on the hi-way capturing and torturing peaceful civilians. There is the third story and it is Susan's memory of her past life with her ex-husband Tony (Jake Gyllenhaal) . The three stories are plated together like the karmic knot that Susan is challenged to unseal in order to find out lots of unpleasant truths about herself. The cast is beyond any appraisal:the list of strongest actors goes on and on and you can not decide who played better among them so great everyone was. I will not forget to mention that the grotesque start of the film with the overweight naked women dancing that turns out to be an art gallery opening. It literally put me in a very strange state of mind as I was slightly turning mad. The luxury of outfits (episode with Susan'smother's jewelry statement ) are simply turning into the steals of the scenes that are so shockingly gorgeous and out of this world they are hard to forget! So is Susan's house although cold and glassed it appears as an iceberg in the middle of Susan's manuscript readings. The director takes us from the hot water and then make us stand under the icy cold shower. The rocky road of emotions during the film does not end it the cinema hall but follows you around for days after as I said before. The episode in the book read by Susan the main character is portrayed the same way as Susan husband was weak and powerless (at least this is how she saw him). he is unable to protect his wife and his daughter on the road during the rage when the unarmed ruffians take the advantage of the family very easily, The scene can not be watched without shock and surprise when the husband is unable to protect his own family. Even the revenge scene solves the conflict in the only possible way: the humble and helpless husband should die as he will be unable to go living with the sin in his soul. However the revenge will be chasing not only the bandits on the road. Susan's ex-husband Tony will also get his revenge. His revenge in reality is more cruel than his book of fiction described revenge. Two last words about he film: electrifying and sophisticated!
LEOPARD review by Nadia Pleshkova
Why do some movies are called certain way? After watching "LEOPARD" I was in no position to miss the opportunity to look up the symbolism of the animal Leopard. Leopard carries the symbolic meaning of privacy and that she is secretive in all that she does, therefore making it a perfect symbol of secrets and the need to keep them. Thus the movie "LEOPARD" (2016) keeps the truth hidden till the very end. The dark thriller is the story of two brothers, damaged by their vulnerable upbringing and lack of support and hatred by the local, strongly religious, community. Reunited after a few years, their search for the mother and a resolution to their past takes an unexpected turn in their relationship with each other. The gloomy weather and a grey scenery throughout the film add to the dramatic mood and personal tragedy of the main characters but to bring some light and love towards the end. Strong acting will keep the audience mesmerized, no doubts.
If you have not seen a good Italian comedy in a while this is going to be your time. Two women from a psychiatric resort / facility take a wild thelma-and-louise ride escaping away to the freedom one day. They visit their past and faced with their ugly present can not see the future. The film would be a devastating journey int two life tragedies and if was not for a good and healthy humor it would be a very scary story to watch. We discover bit after bit what has taken place in both women's lives and how did they end up in the crazy place like that. The movie is shot in the best Federico Fellinian traditions: it is everywhere and nowhere; it is about everything and nothing and it is as surreal and real as life itself. Will this escape from reality help both women to realise what have they done and how can they take the present now? They both walk on the edge so to speak: one more move and they end up either in the strict facility hospital, in jail or on the death bed themselves. We feel fearful for them though we laugh each time something outrageous takes place. Both women live in the fantasy world of lies and stories that never took place. Will they see themselves as they are - no perfection, no beauty - just as they are now! But what most important is : will WE see both woman as normal human beings who act according to their believes and crazy circumstances they are surrounded by? We travel together with both girls on the rocky roads they built for themselves: we laugh and cry together with them as we become part of this story ourselves by picking up their ever changing moods and feelings.
If you like classical films and classical acting this movie is for you. The three leading characters are played to the best the cinematography can wish for. The story line is heartbreaking. The character are all so lovable that it is impossible to judge them by their actions as we understand why they have done this and have not done that. One lie as a chain of actions brings many lies after: one after another they grow on you as the time passes by. The lie was a natural necessity at one stage but it turns many lives upside down. the truth is even more ugly: it can destroy many lives and families. The honesty that tries to cover the lie brings more damage than anything else: it can lock people in jail, it can break hearts of many and can wipe off the trust between two people. What would you choose? The answers seem simple if you are not involved in this game: you would obviously choose honesty and truth but if the lie can heal you and your family than can it be a solution?.. and then what would you choose: your own pleasure and peace, the please of your partner or your child perhaps: what is there that is more important to you?... There is no answer to this question. There might be the Light between the Oceans, but it takes so much from us to keep it in flames, bright and pure that sometimes it is almost impossible and we choose dishonesty as we see so much of it around us... What IS the answer? The cinematography, the soundtrack and the details shot in the movie are absolutely exquisite to the extend (as I mentioned earlier) that this will be a classical film on your movie collection shelves easily.
For those of us who love a fine science-fiction movie this would be a perfect example of what we all are looking for. Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is assigned to be a mediator between the aliens and the humans. She is a linguist with extraordinary skills. She lecturers at the University when suddenly the breaking news stop her class and change the course of her days. She is a single mother raising a daughter who suddenly passes away from a terminal disease. The arrival of the other universal creatures affects people not only globally as the landing takes place in 12 locations on Earth, not even on the national level but mainly it changes the lives of the humanity individually: Louise experience this on her own mind and the changes shock her inner core: not only she gets the super-human abilities she is now able to influence the decisions taken on global levels. The film i scary and it is breathtaking in some moments. The messages Louise receives are intimate however she takes them on the universal level. The mystery of arrival will be felt inside your physical and emotional bodies but not in the negative way but more like in a shade of curiosity and expansion of your world vision and planetary perspective. If only we could understand each other on the surface of the Earth - the way Louise understood the aliens decoding their messages - we would all be happy and live without wars and suffering. Amy's character is vulnerable though strong by its believes. She seems a bit weak at the beginning but as her character develops and she reveals the messages sent to her (and to humanity) we can see her powers and what she stands for. While the film shows us how separated we all are and how we are all far away from the truth, the point is clear at the end: we are all given a gift of knowledge and we are all equal on how we treat it: we are all one at the end. The film will be an eye opening for many who respect a good science-fiction story with the memorable message.
THE BASKETBALL DIARIES review by Ivan Lubkov
The Backlot studios – Basketball diaries. The exclusive private party venue The Backlot studios hosted screenings of classic movies that stand out as extraordinary jewels of the modern film industry. Access to the cinema is located within a walking distance to Melbourne Exhibition and Convention centre and has abundance of free parking in the vicinity. The films are displayed on a modern 8m by 4m silver screen with Dolby Digital 7.1 sound. The picture and audio output is state of the art and ensures full immersion in the film. The Backstreet Diaries is based on autobiography of an American musician and writer James Dennis Carroll. The picture has raised a lot of controversy at the end of 1997 when it faced a lawsuit due to a mass shooting in Columbine High school which was allegedly inspired by some of the scenes of the film. Even though the lawsuit was dismissed after 4 years the expert community agrees to substantial similarities. The film was also one of the first works of the raising start Leonardo DiCaprio playing the main role of Jim Carrol. The screening gave a harsh reminder of the horrible impact of drugs. People influenced by addiction cause distress and sadness not only to themselves but to the people around them. In certain cases the only way for addicts to break free from lifeless grip of narcotics is to go through jail and rehabilitation. Even though the picture showed a downhill journey of a young teenager going through the worst stages in life it also opened up space for hope of recovery even in the worst cases.
Artificial intellect and the challenges that human race will have to face in the future: controlling their creations - this is the major story line so to speak. Morgan is a product of many years of work in a hidden from civilisation laboratory. Did I like the film? No. I found it not only scary and pointless but also quite weak in the message delivered as well as the director's work. It was way too predictable and even boring at some stage. In the middle of the film I felt the strong message inside of me saying: why should I care about all these characters? They do not grow, they are not exciting and finally they are copied from some better films we all saw in the past. If something goes wrong in the kitchen the food that comes out to the clients does not taste good: the ingredients might all be right (excellent actors, well chosen surroundings etc etc_ but it simply does not glue together.
GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016: 4 KINGS 4 Könige (original title) website RATE: 9/10
Being not native Germans we will never understand the significance of the title: 4 Kings. It is similar to name Russian movie Three Bears - if you do not know history or folklore you will have hard time to guess the meaning of the title. All I can say - the film is simply superb without getting into details of the title meaning! We do not need this to be honest. The plot is simple - four different teenagers are brought together by faith under the roof of psychiatric hospital, under the supervision of wise psychiatrist who makes very smart decision bringing out the human factor from all four from one side and a flight-over-the-coo-coo-nest nurse on the other side. The situations the teenagers face all shape them into the people with human faces while the characters are developing and the plot unfolds in front of our eyes: the shy and bullied at school Georgian boy while facing his biggest fears get changed; the difficult in controlling character of one of the girls get transformed from one episode to another, the violently behaving young man is also confronted by challenges etc etc. Although isolated they can not avoid communicating with people, there is nothing really that get changed for them: they have to learn how to adapt; nothing has changed for the and everything has changed. The story feels very natural not only because we all see a little bit of ourselves in all the characters shown: parents and children; children and parents; doctors and patients but also because there is no one single fake note played in this film. Even the doctor has his own dark soul corners that he is sharing with his patients. There us also the aspect of action and reaction shown so vividly right: there are active and passive characters but we see how some seemingly humble action can turn into an unexpected ugly reaction. We all should be responsible for our action as they bring a chain of unforeseen array of events that may be beyond our control. The film is complicated in its core: all I can say the ending is not promising but the light for sure in unavoidable.
The Age Of Shadows is another film set in 20-s about the war against Japanese invaders in Korea, The films portrays the war of resistance in its best colors: conspiracy, under-cover, hide-and-seek with little victories and little deaths, Independence movement is shown in its glory and it reminds us of many films we have seen in the past about the subject hat excited us many years ago. The film is far away though from the "ancient" and it done masterfully well - enough to entertain and bring the message across. The action is superb fresh and leaves behind many latest James Bond films by suspense, chases and cat-mouse games. I loved the colors, light and dark brown that the camera man used to show the period and get us into the feel of the era. The sound track is superb and there are much more classical music than you can hear in the conservatorium or music all these days. I also trust that Korean people will price up this movie much higher but even for the observer like myself who does not know much about the Korean-Japanese history at time of occupation it was historically valuable to watch. If you go you will sure have some pleasant time to laugh and some sad time to drop a tear. Total delight!
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is an example of a well done action movie/ thriller. Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) and Susan Turner's ( Cobie Smulders ) names are both on the list of government conspiracy that caused the death of two of Susan's soldiers... and well, Jack and Susan are both facing jail because of the dirty games in the head operation of government secret service. They need to uncover a criminal activity within the military government service in order to clear their names. As a parallel story to the major line Jack will face some personal issues that he had in the past and find out if the girl who the criminals are about to kidnap is his daughter or not. If you love action films you will totally enjoy this film as there are definitely more than enough action, violence and brutality in this film. Th first and very wild thought that came to mind after watching this film: the titles that wee given to many people in the old age were given to them for aggressiveness and killing the others - the more the army general would kill and win over the enemy the higher title he would get. The titles got carried through for ages. Now people are proud to wear and to have them but some of them forget how the title was awarded. Of course this is different nowadays and even scientists can get a Sir or Lord title for their services to the certain country. I had these thoughts while watching the aggressive behavior of the leads of this film. While the military uniform suits them very well the violence coming from the hands of a woman is very frustrating to watch. I also believe many of you will be drawn to the movie because of Tom Cruise. To be honest I have not seen that many films with him but the one that I will always remember was Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut where he was young and superb. The plot is rather simple (but not primitive) and has some unexpected twists that you will value if you understand the cinematography well enough to compare and evaluate. We could not resist also to compare this film with latest James Bond movies and should admit that Jack Reachers is definitely richer and is done much better. We hope you will enjoy the film too!
OUIJA :ORIGIN OF EVIL website review by Bryanna Reynolds
The film Ouija Origin of Evil is one that is sure to delight and excite all you horror film fanatics.
The film follows the journey of a single parent family consisting of a mum and two daughters who try to make ends meet by working from home as a fortune teller. Her younger daughter finds comfort in using a Ouija board in hope of connecting with her father who had died.
The cast of characters took you on a whirlwind journey of fighting a presence in their home and with the addition of a priest from the girls school, things get rather interesting.
I found myself sitting in the cinema holding my hands over my eyes. I was quite jumpy and i think this was due to the sound effects throughout the film. While i wish there was more of a horror film soundtrack there was a fabulous array of sound effects used which were very scary.
There was one thing that i found funny and that was the amount of comedic moments throughout the film. The cinema would erupt in laughter at times. This may be due in part to the nervous tension felt throughout the audience. It would be interesting to watch this in another context to see the effect it has on people.
I feel like the film would be much more scary as well if you were watching with a bunch of friends in a dark room at home. I would definitely recommend this.
If you are a fan of the film Matilda, a children's film then you are sure to love this horror film. I would describe it as being a horror version of Matilda meeting the concept of the popular film The Conjuring.
I look forward to seeing more films from this creative team.
RUSSIAN RESURRECTION FILM FESTIVAL 2016: FLIGHT CREW website RATE: 7/10
Flight Crew film is a thriller that will make your blood freeze. If you already know that Russian cinema is good this movie will not prove you anything new; but if you wee in doubt this is the film for you to watch and perhaps change your mind. the actors' performance is amazing; the special effects and graphics are superb (although was a bit too much for my personal liking). The story is very familiar: the over qualifies pilot is disqualifies for a small mistake he has not even done. He has to prove himself back to workforce. His personal life is also far way from perfect: the woman of his dream is simply slipping through his fingers: uncatchable and his family does not trust him anymore. Will he make the things right given the task which is hard to perform even for a first class pilot? Will he be again respected by his boss? Will he make it all without errors with his girl... and finally : will his father give him a manly hug of trust and honor? If you like an action movie with unpredictable ending - this is the story for you to go and watch!
BBC BRITISH FILM FESTIVAL 2016 I, DANIEL BLAKE website RATE: 10/10
I am not quite familiar with the Australian Social Security System as I do not know that many people who benefit from it nor we wanted ourselves to ever use the system for different reasons. The movie shows the days of Daniel Blake , the gentleman in his middle age who developed a heart condition and can not work anymore. He is forces to go and seek the government assistance. The actions take place in Great Britain. I had a strange feeling during the hole film as if it was a documentary filmed with the hidden camera so natural and superb the acting was of the whole crew. Daniel worked as a carpenter and thus is what he liked and still likes to do however he is not allowed to continue his work at the same company. The doctors' prognosis are negative and he can not come back to the same work place. Daniel meets a mother of two who is seeking welfare herself. She is in a similar situation. The social benefits however are not paid that easily to the people like Daniel and Katie, a single parent. They need to go through a number of interviews which seem endless, pointless and not achieving any result. Faced with high utility bills Daniel feels hopeless to fight the system so does Katie who is forced to go and search for the "easy" and ugly ways to earn money to support her children. The system turns Daniel, an honest person who only wants to work and to earn money the way he was taught to earn into a a fraud and liar. His protest against the system doe not bring any result either. the audience feels even less hopeless than Daniel and his friend. We are left with a bitter taste of deception and hunger, facing death and poverty from one side a battle with impersonal benefits system where there are no people just numbers and clients, customers and patients. I would not say that the movie does not show any light inside the tunnel: there is humor of course, there is love, care and warmth. We can say that despite the bureaucracy of the state system the system is only a system , but there are people who work inside the system who make it; the system consists of people. If there are no people there s no system, there is no institution. It is all about the care of the individuals inside that system that matters, no matter what the rules are there is always a human factor that can not be neglected. But what should a person do if he is not sick enough for receiving benefits and he is not healthy enough to gt back to work. He is left in between two worlds and none accepts him. Daniel problem is he is too honest to be part of this game as he refuses to take its silly rules. the sincere base of Daniel's character and the film itself, its heartfelt nature is beyond any words: it moves us deep emotionally and it s unmissable as love and life itself. Have you ever heard anything about the world of ugly poverty in its true nature> If you have an open mind and an open heart - this is the film for you to watch and remember. It is most heartbreaking to see that situations like this happen in the wealthiest country in the wold! Some might see a socialist or even communist propaganda in this film but they will be utterly wrong - there is nothing of that nature. I would say the film is far away from that. It is just a message on its own: there is a gap, there is an issue in the system that has to be fixed! Was the film brilliant - yes, it was!
ALLAINCE FRANCAISE CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL 2016: VIVA, MARIA! website RATE: 7.5/10
For those of you who love French movies, for those of you who love French Classic movies and for those of you who fan Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau this is the best entertainment as you can find. Two Marias get together by accident: Maria I is the daughter of terrorist who dies caught on the spot of his crimes. Maria II is a circus actress who looses her singing partner due to an accident. They meet and create a band many men can not resist to listen to: they sing and well... they take their clothes off in front of the public while the circus vans are travelling from one Mexican village to another, Luttle the girsl knew about faith as they would be chosen to head a Mexican revolution. Viva Maria! is a terrific comedy with witty references to religion, government, revolutions in general and many more. You will not stop laughing if you are in the mood for a light and gilt free entertainment. I was also surprised that being created in 1965 the films still stands well today and it made many people laugh. The movie is also very feminine if I can say so: both girls are stunning and act astonishingly well! Although I found some of the film parts were a bit boring and the plot was having some gaps despite also being quite a long film it was a good experience to look back into the era of my parents. If you are going this year to the Classic French Festival place this one on your list - it is unmissable!
I was never a fan of Isabelle Huppert but in this film she owns practically every episode: she is magnificent, charming and very unpredictable - simply astonishing actress. Michele is a successful business woman who runs a production company that creates an animation games. The movie starts with a raping scene when a criminal breaks into Michele's house and leaves her unconscious on the floor. Despite the suggestions from her friends and relatives Michele does not go to report the incident to the police, she had enough of publicity in her childhood when her psychopath-father was put in jail for murdering. The movie keeps us in suspense for the duration of the whole horrific "dreams" of Michele: some are her imagination and some are in her reality. We can only guess who the rapist was. But none of our guesses would be correct: as usually he comes out unexpected. The film is not only about the incident though: Michele's personal life is out of order too: she is seeing secretly a husband of her best friend, she is unhappy about her son's relationship, she is not accepting her ex-husband's new love and finally she has some sexy-haunted dreams by her happily married neighbour. More to that her workers are making fun of her by creating an anime-character who looks like their boss. Everything is falling apart in her world and the raping scenes does not leave her sick mind even at nights... Will she solve the puzzle of her life?.. This is for you to discover I guess!
Well, sometimes I believe it is better not to do something rather than to do. This film would receive a rate of almost zero if it was not for Tom Hanks. Only Tom got my 7 out of 10 but he should get 10/10 if the movie was excellent. We all loved Da Vinci Code and other Dan Brown novel adaptations - they were all very well done and they should stop there. But just as they have not got it with Indiana Jones they could not resist to continue torturing poor Dan Brown. I did not read his novel but I am sure it is excellent. I can not say 100% this Inferno adaptation was as good as the previous Dan Brown's novels made out to films. the plot was weak and not engaging; the acting was as I said superb and this is not only related to Tom, the rest of the crew was excellent too. I loved some historical references - I believe they were very useful just for common knowledge: about Venice, Rome and Turkey - they were all Dan's gems I believe. The movie reminded me more of a good computer game - please take a look at the poster - even the poster looks like an invitation to play! I can not understand why but it was something very wrong with the direction of this particular movie : it was just falling apart like a badly constructed puzzle. It was extremely predictable as well. I guess for the other Dan's book they need either to change a director or rework a lot on making the movie more likable to watch!
JEWISH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2016: SAND STORM website RATE: 8/10
Sand Storm is the drama which feels like a tunnel that does not have the light at the end. It describes the life of one Bedouin family that lives by the tribal rules. The film is about everything: life of the woman [ Jalila (Ruba Blal-Asfour) ]and her struggle in the world devoted entirely to men; her dealing with children, day to day duties and housework, children and parents, second wife and her dominating husband. The film also shows the side of the older daughter in the family: Layla (Lamis Ammar) whose only will is to marry to the love of her life and get her freedom to escape the ugly cage where women are treated like a piece of furniture and only serve men and their obsessions. We find out that the man in the family can sell his daughter to the man she does not want to marry, she can not choose whom she can love, the man can banish his wife from his house and return her without her children to her parents (who of course do not want her back), the man can also get himself and freshly new wife and spend his days as he wants: gambling, pleasing and entertaining himself. The woman can not say her word - even when she wants freedom to her own daughter, Even when the man understands himself that what he is doing is wrong he can not escape the traditions of the tribe - he has to follow the rules. But sometimes the rules dominate our own reasonable view on the world turning it upside down: I do it only because it has been done like this for generations. Finally we are looking into the eyes of a younger girl in teh family: may be she will break the rules or she might also remain in the system? Who knows?..
JEWISH International FILM FESTIVAL 2016: THE PEOPLE VS. FRITZ BAUER website RATE: 9/10
This is the act of his like: to bring high-ranking German Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann to justice. His name is Fritz Bauer and he is German Attorney General who is so close to the end of his political carrier. He is hunting the ex-Nazis or this is how the film portrays him. We do not know if this is his ambition or something that he tries to prove to the German citizens or this is simply an genuine act for humanity. I am pretty sure also that German secret service always knew where the Nazis ran away and who was hiding where. The fact is that the secret service still was consisting of the ex-Nazi in 50-s and 60-s - why would the government get rid of the good workers who showed themselves already as devoted labor forces. It is cheaper to take the old ones than to teach the new. Bringing back the Nazis and war criminals was impossible for Germany just as they could have give away more names then the government wanted. The act of justice then for this and different other reasons was given to the Israeli secret service. Her Bauer had to work under cover so to speak so his own government would not guess what was going on. Fritz discovered the location of Adolf and the Israeli authorities would do the rest. The films shows the valuable information history-wise as well as one person's determination to do his work right despite all the barriers and difficulties on his way. It is a very well made story that is acted perfectly with amazing crew on board. Alex mentioned that such movie should open not only Jewish International Film Festival but also the German one in Australia as well as everywhere overseas. I found the movie to be very fresh for the well known and shown in many ways theme: Nazis, Germans and justice. It is so to speak "politically interesting" as many similar movies end up to be very dry ad boring. I am raising my thumb for incredible acting as well as the directing and script wiring. I iwll never forget the socks part as it was quite a funny bit of the movie!

Rose Dorfman:[to her husband] No answer is also an answer!
Night Club Guest: Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” But the examined one is no bargain.
Bobby: Life is a comedy written by a sadistic comedy writer.
Rose Dorfman: First a murderer, and now a Christian! What did I do to deserve this? Which is worse? Marty Dorfman: He explained it to you. The Jews don't have an afterlife. Rose Dorfman: We are all afraid of dying, Marty! But we don't give up the religion we are born into. Marty Dorfman: I'm not afraid to die. Rose Dorfman: You're too stupid to appreciate the implications. Marty Dorfman: I didn't say I like the idea. And I will resist death with everything I have. But when the Angel of Death comes to cut me down, I'll go. I'll protest. I'll curse. You hear me? I will go under protest. Rose Dorfman: Protest to who? What the hell are you gonna do? Write a letter to the Times? Marty Dorfman: I will protest in silence.
Bobby's mother says that you should live each day like it's your last, and one day you will be right.
Review The overall impression. This is one more masterpiece of Woody Allen. We called it classical because it is one of those films that you will want to have in your collection of DVDs together with his and other best directors works of art. It is a beautiful movie. It is a well balance movie: it requires a brush of a master to create a perfection where the drama in the film is well balanced with comedy. romance with, society with the individual characters, structure with chaos etc - that all that makes life itself. Alex told me that Woody Allen's films - all and this one in particular are like a good and well mixed cocktail: the taste is perfect and you will remember it years after - you will want to try it years after again and again: classics only gets better with years. Some films are like bad wine - they remain an aftertaste in your mouth; some are like strong drink - they hit you once and knock you down, you learn your lesson and you do not want to try it again. Sometimes a sip of a badly brewed and cheap beer will be the first and the last time you try it. The fine cocktail will never betray you. The actors. No words - the whole crew work like one entire unit that is lead my the conductor's talent. they never allow themselves to make any mistakes The music. Superb. The plot / the story line is so familiar to many of us. You make your life choice thinking she/he is the person of yoru dreams, Time passes and you suddenly realise there is something better: betrayals follow. Betrayals either leave scars on families or destroy not only yours but many lives... and finally: she/he becomes not so good as you thought it would be... Another betrayal will follow and the vicious circle will never end. Where is the solution: be happy with what you have - there is no difference whom you are with - we are all the same. You can change gloves every day - your hand remains the same - fix yourself and stop destroying the lives of others.... The solution seems simple but people are silly. Sometimes I think this is not us who think but someone else makes the decisions for us. Once again: this is a beautiful film - a must to see!
What a fascinating and glamorous start of the film that turn into one (and I am not afraid of this word) crap disaster of a plot. The scary part of the movies that involve violence that does not know the boundaries, rivers of blood, rape scenes, animal fear, kissing corps, eating and vomiting human flesh and so on and son on - they are not the scary pat - the scary part is that such sick stories are shown to our young generation with pretending to be an art. They vulgar, they are not acceptable - they have nothing for us to learn from rather than being disgust after watching it. I was close to fainting and vomiting in my own chair inside the theater. The trailer does not show the most unsuitable for human consumption scenes. If you have a chance - please miss this film and go and see something else. I believe the psychopaths who create such movies should not be supported! We a;ready have enough violence in this world and I am not prepared to see it again and again! Mot in such form for sure! When I started watching the film I was thinking: this is an awesome movie our fashion group would adore to watch but the second part of the film was so poor and revolting I would not recommend it even for horror loving fans.
The Girl On The Train is a mesmerizing story of one young woman whose personal life turned to be not as beautiful as she would have thought. Every day she takes the train to pass one house on the way and observes the life of the family living inside the house thinking that they might be happier than her; she practically starts living this family life and her obsessions takes her finally on the journey that she has never imagined uncovering so many secrets of her own life. She starts to remember bit by bit what has happened to her in the past and she takes in account the events that take place in the present. She is faced with the truth that will change the lives of many families involved... One glace out of the window that can turn into attachment and then uncover many crimes. The thriller will grab your mind strings and will not let them go til the very end of the story. I found the acting in this picture to be perfect; the story line was very intriguing but it was a bit too much for my liking... however as I mentioned many times before the real life stories can be more intense that the made up. The film was very good but it was not excellent perhaps because I was expecting too much of it. I also believe many young families will find the answers to many of their questions: first and the most important one is - why everyone else's family is happy and mine is not? the answer is all the families has their unhappy moments - there are no just happy families as there are no just happy people - we all have ups and downs; the family is just like an entity, it is like a person. It is impossible for us know what is happening inside the other families and especially it is silly to think that someone else's life is better than your own. This road can lead to jealousy and deep disappointment. The better was is to improve your own life rather than look into someone else's windows... There are much more good messages inside this film - for you to watch and discover!
This is a very powerful film. The events of this film take place during the World War II when American Army got involved in the Battle of Okinawa. The Army doctor Desmond Doss (Des) a soldier and army volunteer who could not touch the gun due t his religion and his own inner beliefs and who because of that was considered a coward among the other soldiers and the army commanders , he who was beaten by his army roommates just because he was different, he who was close to be charged by the military tribunal because of his beliefs , he who simply refused to kill because he knew it was wrong even at the war , he becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor only because of his actions during the battle carrying on himself 75 wounded soldiers from the battle filed to the hospital and risking his own life. The film is directed by Mel Gibson. I have to admit it is very hard to watch the battle scenes which to were quite brutal... but the film is based on real events, Des is a real person and we also know that in real life it might have been even more violent. The message of this film is quite clear: if you belief is strong everything in this world helps you. I also understand it does not make a difference where the courage, the love and the belief come from and what they are based on - we are all human and our actions should be human no matter what. I remembered in Russia during the World War II our young medical girls saved 100-s of lives with no apparent believes , some of their names are unknown, some of them are awarded the medals and badges. Your belief should be based on common laws of humanity, common laws of Universe. The movie is so strong (as our publicist has mentioned) it can get you some hours after watching: I burst into tears hours after the screening; I still feel so much for this one man, Des who saved so many lives. He not only made people around hi to look at him in a different way he turned many of us into better humans. It is not the bibles that saved him of course - it is his own high spirit and his personal high values an principals. I am always thinking: can one single person change the flow of history or it is the crowd deeds? Yes and no, Yes because the others learn from one person how to be as courageous as him, no because one man is nothing without the others who support him. Heroism can not be acted without the others being involved. I trust this film will not be lost on the shelves of dust together with the other movies in your collection, no, it will be always a point of discussion as the theme touched is universal and can be applied to the situations in the world especially when the wars break down between brothers and sisters and they do not make sense. I was thinking: if everyone was the same as Des, there will be no wars and the governments would be forced to solve the conflict on paper not by arms and by lives of other people. Perhaps we would have a better world if "Deses: would be in the government too...
Two brothers: one divorced with kids and another who was just released from jail for bank robbing are trying to save their family farm in not so usual way. If you like films with a little of that "cowboy flavour, blood, guns, brutality, lots f killing, bank robberies - this criminal drama is for you. I am personally not a fan, but this particular movie is very well done so I gae it all my thumbs for dynamics, actors great and natural performance and the camera work. The rate is lowed only because the story itself seemed a bit simple to me. The action takes place in Texas and the southern flavour is noticeable on every corner. My favorite episode was the ones in the local cafe when two policemen order T-bone steaks from an older lady. There is always two sides of the coin in robberies: one side is the men who want justice as the bank steal from everyone. When they take back what belongs to them -this is ok and we take it with laughter; but when peaceful civilians are killedfor nothing we are confused as it now seems not that simple. The other side of the coin is when the people (policemen) who protect these money get hurt - this is unjustified, But every crime planned even with good intentions sooner or later will turn into a disaster because what shall you take you shall receive. We can follow the brothers and we can see where their action might take them... and we get worried about them but at the same time we understand after what they have done the justice should take place... As we know there are no perfect crimes But every crime story ends differently. I would not say this movie was perfect though, it was good to watch and it was a good entertainment, You need to see this movie!
Bear: I am a Comanche. Do you know what it means? It means 'Enemy to everyone'. Tanner Howard: Do you know what that makes me? A Comanche.
It is one of those films that is impossible to rate. You will understand why when you watch it. The Deepwater Horizon is an offshore drilling rig located in the waters close to Louisiana state . The film is based on the real time events that took place in 2010 when the wrong orders were given to the workers of the rig by the BP company representatives. We all love action films, we all like drama on screen and we all love thrillers that freezes our blood. But when you know that the drama actually based on real time events all you experience is deep pain watching it: seeing people dying, burnt and wounded. You will have a handkerchief close if you pocket as the tears will follow as soon as the movie gets to it second part. It is becoming a question of morality: do such movie have its place on the screen? Aren't they even more painful for the families who lost their members in this disaster? What do we know and find out from such films apart of experiencing a deep condolences for those gone and for feeling horrible watching how people fight for their lives?.. I found the movie to be quite disturbing and apart from showing the heroes, the people who suffered because of one BP mistake people in reality are so vulnerable and so fragile... Was it a mistake to make such a movie? You can perhaps agree or not agree with me on that by watching it yourself. Please keep in mind also tat there is an array of very famous actors filmed: John Malkovich who plays the BP representative and Kate Hudson who played the wife of one of the rig's heroes.
This film is perhaps a funny joke on all of us. The man who tricked the whole CIA? Please, give me a break! We did not buy a word from this movie, forget about the plot or a story line. It is not about if the story was told in the most truthful way - not even about that. It is just sound kike a made up joke. For us there was no story, it was a fiction. We also believe that Sbowden himself have not realsied what he has done and how he has been used (this is just in case Snowden existed ever!) . Do you believe any country turns off their politics on spying on each citizen? I would never believe it - no government in the world would do that - if I was in the government I would continue spying on each and every citizen in my country and as a matter of fact - in the whole world. It is a matter of security and nothing else. I would like to argue with you if you think the opposite. Please tell me: this man is very very smart, ok, why in the right state of mind anyone would do what he has done? This is not smart - it only shows that CIA hires silly people... right? Or the ends do not meet here?...and if Snowden was so wrong why is he still walking happily and living smiling?.. Do we miss something important here? If you want to check out this film please go ahead and do it - I would like to hear what you believe in this story and what you did not...
It's fum, it's light and it is so uplifting you will be coming back home from the movie singing " TE POI ! PATUA TAKU POI PATUA KIA RITE PA-PARA PATUA TAKU POI E !.." Just learn the words before you start! WORDS Translation: Poi Swing out rhythmically, my feelings lean out beside me, so deceptively. Swing round and down, spin towards me just like a fantail.
Swing to the side: swing to and fro zoom down, wriggle, climb up above, swarm around me my whirling emotions, my poi, Yeah!
Oh my feelings, draw near, Oh my poi, don't go astray Oh my affections, stick to me Oh my instincts, take care of me Oh my emotions, be entwined around me.
Oh poi, our love... Oh poi ...binds. Poi.... my poi, yeah!
You guessed it right! This is the film about the song, its growth and its beautiful history. What is Poi E you will ask me/
I read in Wiki: ""Poi E" is a New Zealand 1984 number-one hit song by the group Patea Māori Club off the album of the same name. Its popularity is unique in New Zealand as Māori music rarely reaches popular status." Poe is Poi is a protective symbol The twirling poi is often used as a symbol of a young woman's affections. They are volatile, but with some energetic training, they protect her from danger. The film takes us on a journey not only of the song but the Maori people. I noticed one very interesting thing: during the screening there were lots of Maori people: they laughed so much as some parts of the story were very witty. Maori are very happy people. Why is that? I suppose this is because they live so far from the whole world they do not care about anything else but dancing, singing and loving their country... of course I am joking.... Have you switched the song on already? BE CAREFUL - IT IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!!
