FRANCES HA NEW
1. genius selection: music, sound - it is so instinctive 2. genius colors - black and white. they are surprising at the beginning and you keep thinking c/mon guys, it's is not 20th century anymore! but then you suddenly understand the idea. black and white background reflects the emotions in their raw and natural state. having such background brings your attention to the beauty of shapes and eyes showing the soul movements and the feelings and more... you understand... as a contrast take modern colorful movies that are empty in their very core... well, some of them as there is only one winning attribute in them - color. Frances Ha is no much more than colors... 3. genius actors/actresses - the characters are so organic, so changing and so full of life, boundary-less, so rare to meet in life as they don't build any frames or cages they live in. 4. a movie about your life dream materialising when you realise you worth every inch of it 5. genius movements - no one single boring moment in the movie, effortless to the perfection and t o the imperfection - to me it looked like a one unpretentious dance of a genius choreographer. there are lots of actions n the movie but they are not plain, dull and quickly forgettable like an old chewing gum, like James Bond but on the contrary - action in its genuine and i-want-more-of-it facet 6. it is a movie about young people - yes, but not as you used to watch them before but as you see them in real life (so Masha Marchev :o)) - it is not a fake subproduct on someone's imagination among roommates, vodka and sleepovers but one sincere being-ness in the state of young... they are not bad, they are not good - they are as they are - no moral, no unmoral, no judgement, no attachment - just one young breath... even sex talking is not vulgar but energy sparkling openness... 7. reminded both us of PINA movie (dancing, music, fresh emotions and purity 8. I am in love with this movie but I think i just see Masha in it 100% - could not stop thinking about my daughter every second of it, every move of Frances Ha-lliday...
Synopsis: JOBS is the powerful and true story of the visionary who set out to change the world and did. The film chronicles Steve Jobs transformation of character from the enthusiasm and self-discovery of his youth, to the personal demons that clouded his vision and finally to the ultimate triumphs of his later life. Mark Hulme and Five Star Feature Films launched the production immediately following Jobs' retirement in August 2011. Screenwriter Matt Whiteley, while penning the script, utilised a team of expert researchers based on months of exhaustive research and interviews with Steve Jobs' friends, colleagues and mentors to develop the most truthful and gripping picture of Jobs' life.
NM review: "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them. Disagree with them. Glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world Are the ones who do.."
Such geniuses usually have two character sides: the one everyone sees (the public) and the one all the others see (mostly those who interact with them more often). I am glad the movie gave us a chance to see some glimpse of both personalities in Steve: he could be rude and unfair to his employees and to his close ones but he changed the time and the space around him by his charisma, by his enthusiasm and his approach to everything he touched, by what he could do 40 years ago for all of us to enjoy our lives now, by revolutionizing what he knew could work, by bringing and breathing life into the places where movement seemed impossible and into the people transforming them into extraordinary individuals like he was...
One small note and some spoons of bitterness to the sweet honey barrel of my review: Ashton Kutcher is a comedy actor and he is good in some light and stupid acting (and he is not even close to perfect in what he has been doing so far) No serious acting for him please... He is not there yet... and he is not 100% Steve, he is not Oscaring it even to 10%! It does not flow with him - you keep paying attention on Ashton's Steve's walking (BAD!), I could see more Ashton than Steve and he plays weak, weak, weak... Cum'on, Ashton, you could do this better... But I could not think about anyone in Hollywood who could perform this role in greater way than Ashton did...
BEFORE MIDNIGHT NEW
this movie reminded me of myself so much... and Alex just mentioned that all women are the same: we all need a constant and permanent approval that we are loved... our continuous testing and challenging questions to men suck... and one more thing: all happy couples are the same - they argue and they make up, and they argue again and they make up... if someone tells me they are 100% happy in relationship - it is not true and i will never buy it - on the contrary - i will start thinking that there is something that is 100% wrong when the person mentions how happy he / she in family life (continuous praising of such perfect achievements rings the bell that the relationship actually do not work). tell this person that you love him/her and you will see what happens next and how he/she will turn into a closed doors and will start a thinking process... we are not even happy with ourselves - how can we find that god-like someone who is a 100% match for us - this is impossible by Nature, by Laws of impossibilities and possibilities. he/she can be a twin flame, he/she can be a soul mate but this is not about him/her - this is all about YOU and how you see yourself in this world. If you are more or less in harmony with yourself and that god inside of you (in love with the world around you) you will be happy in any relationship you start. but the total and absolute harmony is an ultimate goal - it is an endless journey to yourself and finding yourself. why? because we are this way and we like the process not the target. the more complicated story arise when you take in account that being in relationship you both grow on your own (he / she grows and changes) and you both change and you are different day after day as you are meet yourself amended by your spirit and that other person next to you wakes up anew every day. you are not the same as you were when you met 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago... as your life envelopes in front of you so your relationship reach to a different level day after day... do you want to see yourself? ... you should watch the movie as it is such a pure mirror you will be laughing at your self facing that woman and that man if you have enough guts to do it...
well I can talk about this movie forever but it will be a base and a plot of ideas for another movie, my movie and my story...
Max is 30 years of age, a banker in middle management, he is smart and successful: his life rocks... [as I watched this movie and I saw myself on that Russian project in 2006 working with these guys. The picture is so vivid and so true and real I could not resist to make certain associations because it brought back so many memories as if the Max's image was copied from the guys I worked with...]
There are two lines in movie. One is obvious: they seem to have high life but they are so bored with themselves... as there is nothing left inside and they do not know why they are that way and how to bring the life interest back. Most of them become alcoholics at the age of 50 you would be scared to look at them as their eyes are empty - as there is no soul reflected there - they are SOULLESS. It is not sad - this is for information only - you can not be sad for such people as it is their life choice and it should be respected as they have total freedom to create what they want. Just they never knew anything else and no one showed them what is "ELSE".
Apart from the main line I mentioned above there is an underline. Max is an extremely strong character. He is a shark when it comes to business world but he is hopeless when it comes to humor... But there is more to that:: there is a glimpse of light inside of him neglecting drugs, smoking and alcohol addiction - there is still some light left and there is not all that is lost forever... that inside core is still there - he is what he is - strong and successful, he created himself through the hardship of orphanage, through hard study and sleepless nights before t he exams... and watch what he finds in life to get the full light as it will shine through the dirtiest place he ends up at... He is the main hero you can fall in love with through his life of comedy and drama... We really loved the movie and rated it distinguishly:
Always dream big? Yes, Big Brother is an ultimate goal for anyone's dream.. Indeed... What else can you dream of? May be knowledge? May be ultimate health or enlightenment, the ability to answer all questions ever asked - no forget about this... To get into the Big Brother's show - this is the dream of a dream of every intelligent person on the planet! Just imagine: you will be famous and you will have lots of money! What else can you dream of? You are running out of you fantasy choices? The obsession to get your dream to come true becomes your reality as nothing else matters: your family, your possessions, your dignity and pride? What dignity and what pride? You step over your children and over your wife so your fake belief, your dream materialize. Is not that the life aim worth living for? You have to keep believing and do everything to reach the unreachable...
We really like the main hero's friend who worked for him at the fish market. When the main hero is saying: "The people from TV are watching me. I am giving to the beggar because of that... " His friend's reply: "But someone is watching you all the time..."
The movie is very controversial. It can disgust you as you watch people who have such foolish dreams. For such dreams they sacrifice their own reality. There are dreams worth living for and worth fighting and sacrificing for and this is good, but there could be dreams that worth as the wrapper of your kid's candy - meaning dumb, meaning nothing!.. The movie is about the latter dream that can make you a mad person.
The script describes a trip of five people to a mystical Bell Tower of Happiness that according to local gossips is located between St Petersburg and Uglich, close to abandoned nuclear power station. A musician, a bandit and his friend with his old father and a prostitute are trying to search for this magical place and be gifted with happiness. But the Bell Tower is not gifting everyone while they all believe that they would be the chosen ones.
The story line reminded us of a famous Tarkovsky’s “Stalker”… but we should say: ~reminded only~ as it is far from a masterpiece like Uglich is too far from St Petersburg. The idea is marvelous and simple: who reaches the place of happiness and who deserves it. The way to the destination so hard for the characters seems even harder to the movie director. The talent of a master piece is seen and comprehended by emotions your audience is experiencing during the movie. If there are no emotions – there is no art. If the picture moved you – you see a top class art work, if it did not – excuse me…
We believe it is a dangerous zone and a dangerous road to travel – the purpose is close but the aim is unreachable (I mean for the director) as the balance is destroyed. What you see and what you do on the way, on your journey is more important than the target itself… I believe we saw Russia as we forgot how it is: semi-destroyed, stinky and dirty halls, elevators and staircases, the roads where the best vehicle to travel in is a wheel-barrow, the hospitals where the best choice is to die rather than continue living – yes… it is desgusting to see, this is life in Russia to its best extend with vodka, ignorance and criminal stories… but why? What is the purpose? The journey is OK to take… but you wait for the end of the movie to show you the light and the way out or some climax … No, the ending is weak and purposeless… as there is no full stop… where are the answers? The answers are all “pointless”? Lost point, lost line, lost movie for the director – too bad we gave it only
The music and lyrics (the songs) were very good and should be rated separately 10/10!
this movie will blow your mind! - this is how good it is... some thoughts: 1. one word - unique movie, and again: that should be watched twice to get all the details and more... it consists of 4 stories all so different but united - through an common atmosphere of being about modern life in russia and... i will tell you later on what is the other aspects of common ground 2. alex was very surprised by the row of unusual ideas he got from this movie - just take this one - to dry your hands under two, not one dryer (as you have two hands!)... grinding your coffee under the pillow to reduce the noise. 3. you feel the movie is done by a genius with great and sometimes mind blowing solutions in cinematography: every story has a twist... 4. the story about money travelling from hands to hands (corruption) staring from a common car mechanic and ending unseen and invisible at the table of a president where money are not in operation anymore. 5. there is another aspect that combines all four stories i promised to tell you about - social problems as it is a movie about people and their relationship in the modern society 6. the story about the woman with extrasensory abilities is more than twisted .. .actually - there is one more thought for you - i bet you will never ever predict the ending of all four stories: a wedding organiser talking to a couple... no you will never guess the ending... money travelling hands to hands... no! a psychic woman trying to find a girl lost in the woods... no way! a young girl and an older guy fall in love... you will never guess how the story ends! i told you - twisted they are... 7. it is also interesting to observe the wedding planned mentioning: i do not work in old traditional style... and the movie ends with an episode of a huge difference of younger and older generations 8. it touches lots of of social problems: modern education gaps, corruption, understanding of each other in relationship etc etc 9. overall impression - sensational movie and fun to watch...

THE GEOGRAPHER (drunk away his globe)
A couple of thoughts: 1. this is an excellent movie and should be watched twice at least for its crucial (or more like not trivial) script and story.
2. the movie would be of interest not only for russian speaking people but for all of us. there are no lush Moscow life and skyscrapers - the life of a far away place called by locals: "the ass of europe" is shown in its bottomless poverty and uncolored "beauty". geographically is the the very end on europe - Ural mountains are dividing Eurasian continent right in the middle of the Perm city (that very "shiny" europen ass).
3. from surroundings... let's go back to the people who live there and their lives. it is a deep psychological drama: funny sometimes as we laugh at ourselves and sad as life itself... take the marriage. there are no perfect ones but some of them just look like dead ends where nothing works out: the fire is gone (if there was any).
4. Konstantin Khabensky acting is close to nothing: he plays magnificent the most complicated main character - all our thumbs up for him!
5. the movie is very sad to watch as the country isdrowning in alcoholism (like the love letter one of the heroes heartlessly throwing into the black water of Kama-river); education is below the bottom line, prostitution is blossoming though which is good - at least something should blossom in such circumstances...
6. oh those russians... you should see what they do to survive... and not like everyday life but watch them white water raffling - amazing, impressive episode of strongest will power you would ever see alive...
7. lets' go back to our main hero... he seems weak and unattractive as he drinks like a horse and he looks disgusting when he drinks... but take a look what happens to him when it comes to survival and HIS will power: how he carries a girl for miles and miles to reach the destination point. take a look how smart he is in his life situation set up (gifting his wife to his best friend just to see her happy (??)) take a look how much light he has got inside and how he gives this light to the others...
8. we could not miss spectacular nature scenes of far away regions of russia... i felt sorry that while working on one London's project back in 2006 in Perm we did not have a chance to see these parts of russia... 9. there is one very important scene in the movie - drowning love letter - it goes down like titanic leaving us with a feeling of one neglected feeling, one neglected person... one neglected nation... they feelings drowning under the water like that best part of your life disappearing in front of your eyes.
10. just the last note: we were so very luck first of all as it was a world premiere but secondly because it was a director's cut that will never be shown anywhere else in world anymore.
11. there is a great movie episode when the car is standing closing the sing behind that says "HAPPINESS IS FAR AWAY". the car takes off opening the rest of the phrase "HAPPINESS IS NOT FAR AWAY" (literal translation would read "happiness is not over the mountains")) Rate: 10/10
full of spanish flavour and craziness movie worth watching as per our previous recommendations... there is an interesting thought: Australia is shown in the movie as an escape destination from life madness. itvery complex movie to watch as it is very hard to analyse the characters you consider not quite right in their heads (softly speaking) - the situations they are placed in and the life circumstances are beyond one normal person's world perception as well as their reaction and behavior and the results of their behavior... oh, stuff it!.. but it is exciting to watch and observe the characters' development... the actors performance is excellent as your feelings go like Melbourne thermometer during the day - basically like four seasons in one day or from -1 to +20 in 2 hours!.. there is not one normal person, not one normal couple, not one normal family - and this is normal... I'd be very suspicious with the people who say their family is normal as there is no such thing... and wait... the one couple that seems pretty normal, the guy is actually... eh... no more secrets... you should go and watch the movie... and one more and last thing: you will not stop laughing... let's say the director: Antonia San Juan is just one Spanish Federico Fellini :o)
some lines from the movie: "do you know marcel proust?" - "what football team he plays in?" - "..[some team name follows]..." - "dont know - he might be new in football..." :)
i am giving up! i think i am now overrating my ability to pick up really good movies following internet reviews, trailers, directors and actors selection... i am giving up as the movie we just watched was too far from we expected or i am just loosing my hope in Spanish cinematography (let my spanish friends forgive me for this comment please). i still trust this is not the latter...
the actor who imho was supposed to look like antonio in reality did look like him but his acting was so poor... oh, HOLD UP here Natasha, no more comments... I try to remain positive but then i start remembering but (forget the actors overall not impressive performance) the movie script, the idea (and me trying to follow it without loosing my thought line)... no, I am really giving up... as originally i wanted to give it 7 out of 10 but after discussing it with Alex we decided to low it down to
some people might find it interesting though as there is an intrigue, lots of gun shots, expensive jewelry, cabaret girls, "fake" detectives, mafia and con- and bull..- artists involved in politics... oh god know what... i believe you should be born in argentina, spain or urugway to understand some specific jokes laugh together with the audience... we laughed but we were always like 2 seconds late... the spanish audience though was singing along, laughing and cheering up the main heroes... well, the spanish flavor was definitely in the air... but we weer not moved... we only hope if you decide to watch it you will be less critical than we are...

No this is not a new Russian James Bond movie... although it is so much close to it... no, not close...
[We love James Bond movies and we never miss new episodes that get released year after year but they seem fake and artificial especially the last ones produced compared with this picture... but let's not change the subject]
This is Russia's first big budget disaster thriller that is so realistic you will freeze to your cinema chair together with your blue-berry ice cream... There are broken bones, blood, wounds, fast moving objects (like trains and people :o)), dead people, half-dead people and not-that-dead people (please those of you claustrophobically ill in head - we recommend you not watch it at all - you will have to leave the theater after 20 min from the start); what else do we have (?): ok, water, water, water, dirty water and dirty tunnels, total deliciously dirty mess (all the good thriller should and must have); scared men, women and children, actually - scared to the extend of going insane: there is only one train and thousands of lives in it... water... and fire in the hearts of those who... oh, would you like me to add some pepper to this dish (?): yes, breathtaking-ly-handsome Russian men that look like enormous Siberian bears... and gracefully tender Russian women that look like meadow flowers and butterflies. Would you like some fries with that (?) or should I say: would you like some dark rye bread, butter and caviar with that? yes, you do! Coincidence or faith (?) brings two men together, two men who love the same one woman: her lover and her husband... they are both caught in the disaster that happens underground... or may be it is their personal demons that bring their lives together in such unfortunate life circumstances... this metro fight for life is their light for one woman... who knows what will happen to them after 8:20 am, after 9 am, after 10 am Moscow pick hour, Sadovoe Koltso... Did I make you interested?.. No? Well, let's say this: naturally I am an emotional person and I never hide my emotions.. .well I do but I don't... I am bad at it... as it shows up as an open book shows its story line with pictures and typos... I was close to tears from the beginning to the end of the movie... only close to tears... not tearing... There are so many familiar characters in the movie that you will be happy to remember and to meet them again be you Russian or not so Russian... 100% pleasurable entertainment indeed! "Everything, everything except love... and our life is too far, I am not alone but I am nothing without you..." - Leva and Shura, a Russian-Australian group B2 burn it in "The Pray" singing this song at the end at the movie...
Very grateful to our friends at Ned & Co for organising the media preview so beautifully with such a movie and yummy snacks and drinks. There are some photos taken from the event:
it is another beautiful version of a well known "the snow queen" (a book by H-C Andersen for those who keep forgetting it...) made in 3-D. it would definitely be an entertaining experience to watch for 5-11 yo kids (fast subtitles reading will be required from them though which also could be a good mind-training exercise for them) and for adults, young and warm in heart. there are lots of new twists and unexpected turns, fantastic adventures in the flowers- and snow- wonderlands in this new interpretation of an old fairy tale. the animation will keep your kids go "wow", "oops", "oh" and even "ouch"... there is one thing for sure: those kind and brave ones always win but (there are always "buts" in these russian interpreted tales) - even the 'baddies' turn into... oops... i am not supposed to tell you all the secrets here... and to discover this part you would need to watch the animation for yourself... do you think gerda will save kai?.. well, you never know with all these crazy russians anymore...
if the title says: romantic comedy you expect the movie to be about love and to be funny. you have an abundance of both in "Love with an Accent" movie by Rezo Gigineishvili. there are six plot-lines that do not connected with each other except one small detail: all the events occur in Georgia. the country is beautiful as their people are (still can not understand why politicians keep separating nations). you would like to see more love? yes, it is so romantic, you will have tears in your eyes, it is so dramatic it will make you angry, it is colorful, mutual, adventurous, with thousands of red roses and petals, it is misunderstood, cruel, extraordinary and delicious. "Mozart?" - "Soccer!" - "Mozart!" - "Soccer" - yes it is funny too... it is naive, full of letters and messages, it is inventive and it is accidental. It is fun to watch as it is soooooo intelligently and tenderly made... Would watch it once again for sure...
some additions from alex: for those of us who have never been to Georgia there is a great opportunity to see the country in its modern shape with all the landscapes and sensational Tbilisi city nigh and sky views... - the camera work is outstanding in practically all movie episodes... there is one more detail: actors reminded me good old french school as some of them play so naturally and effortlessly it is invisible that they actually ACT, they simply live through the movie... excellently done! Rate: 10/10

pre-release movie reviews
GENTLEMEN OF FORTUNE
just some highlights 1. the movie is very light, funny and entertaining 2. the actors performance are good (not excellent but good). Sergei Bezrukov is excellent - HE IS ALWAYS "MISTER Excellent!". 3, it's a old story remake. for those of you who watched an old version it will be a fun way to watch a new one and compare. 4. take james bond movies for example: we like the, most of them are spectacular are entertaining to watch but they are "empty" ad leave the cinema with almost no memories. neglecting the fact that the new G.O.F. movie is also light and entertaining it has a got message behind the main script: but you need to go to the festival and watch the movie to read the message... good luck and good time entertaining yourself and you family!
